545.0. "Amiga Credits" by LEDS::ACCIARDI () Thu Jun 11 1987 07:39

    I just discovered a neat new party trick; well, OK, someone told
    me about it....

    Depress both shift keys and both 'alt' keys simultaneously when
    in any Workbench screen. Now, with any spare fingers, or your nose
    or tongue or whatever, depress any function key: the Amiga's creators
    names are displayed in the Workbench title bar. All ten function
    keys will display different names.

    I wonder how on earth anyone discovered this one?

    Disassembling Workbench would instantly reveal the text. It's only
    a small step from there to finding out what magic keys invoke them.

    Actually, there is a recent PD utility called 'Strings' floating
    around. It examines any binary executable and returns ASCII strings
    that it finds. If you pass 'Preferences' thru it, you'll find lots
    of love messages from RJ Mical to his (now) wife, Caryn.

    If I get a chance, I'll upload it this weekend.
545.3Don't tell anyone but ...TLE::RMEYERSRandy MeyersThu Jun 11 1987 15:5712
Re: .*

Don't forget the obvious: if you put in a hack that caused your name
to be displayed, wouldn't you eventually tell someone about it.
Eventually, the word would get around.

I know someone whose phone number was published in a DEC manual. An
example program in the manual prints it out.

I've been told that that on the Macintosh SE there is a location in the
ROM you can jump to if you want to see a digitized picture of the SE's
developers.
545.4Not on my hardware you dont!KIRK::LONGThu Jun 11 1987 16:448

If I thought I had been short changed on features due to developers' vanity,
I would scream like hell. A digitized picture in ROM is grounds for a
wasted hardware rebate!!!  :^{
545.5But what could they have put in there?TLE::RMEYERSRandy MeyersThu Jun 11 1987 18:379

>A digitized picture in ROM is grounds for a wasted hardware rebate!!!  :^{

The Mac developers claim they couldn't think of anything else to put in
ROM. It is possible: The SE and MAC II were the first Mac's to have more
than 128K of ROM. The SE and MAC II have 256K ROMs, like the Amiga: Maybe
all that room went to their head. I guess the Amiga people just wasted
their left over ROM space by putting in a multi-tasking Exec. :-)
545.6BAGELS::BRANNONDave BrannonThu Jun 11 1987 20:326
    they could be "reserving" the rom space - i've seen lots of patches
    that have to munch on copyright notices because that's the only
    safe patch space. If the space is empty, someone might want think
    they can blast new roms with custom code added.

    Speaking of cute programming tricks, I finally got around to using
    DiskDoctor on a wonky disk. Guess what the disk is named after
    it's been raised from the dead? LAZARUS. I laughed and laughed...

    me too...
    	but only after apparently killing my amiga hardware during a
    hardware hack session.

545.9Another silly trick...LEDS::ACCIARDIMon Jun 29 1987 10:3118
    Here's another trick...

    Load and run Preferences; there is an invisible gadget to the far
    left of the date selector box (at the leftmost edge of the window);
    click there once.

    Now, look at the two little images of the mouse for the time delay
    and mouse stroke gadgets; each mouse has two buttons depicted.
    Moving from left to right, click the image of each mouse button.
    Do this four times in succession.

    Now, select 'Change Printer' and proceed to the printer selection
    menu box. Scroll up, then down through the list of printer drivers
    using the scroll arrow gadgets.

    Now, click in the title bar area of the printer setup screen, and
    you'll see a secret message.

Subject: Two New Secret Messages from Workbench
Posted: 5 Jul 87 21:25:33 GMT
Organization:

Here's two more previously unpublished (on USENET) secret messages from
Workbench. They are rather amusing editorial comments from the Los Gatos
group (probably not too amusing to CBM, though!). You will need either
your nose, a foot, or a friend to help with this one (not kidding!)

First point and click on the workbench screen to activate it (as before).

Now leave the pointer on top of the Click-to-Front gadget on the upper right
of workbench (you don't need to click there, just leave it there throughout
the rest of the following).

(The Five Finger Trick:)

As before, hold down left-shift, left-alt, right-shift, right-alt, and
F1 (this gives the "System Software" credit line at the top).

Don't let up on any of these!

Now eject the workbench disk in df0: (with your nose or other appendages;
at first I used my foot but I find that, by moving the keyboard real close
to the drive I can use a finger of my right hand to do this).

(The Six Finger Trick:)
	You get the message "The Amiga, Born a Champion"

Now hold down the left-amiga button in addition to the others that you're
still holding down (squirm your fingers around until one gets freed up
in the correct area).

Finally, now that you're holding down left-shift, left-alt, left-amiga,
right-shift, right-alt, and the "Champion" message is still on the screen,
*and* the pointer is still over the ClickToFront gadget, insert the disk again.

(The Seven Finger Trick, a.k.a. The Middle Finger Trick:)

	You get "We made Amiga, They fucked it up".

I think this is pretty funny, but on the other hand I can sympathize
with how CBM management folks probably felt when they found out about this.
(Dan Richardson, who demonstrated the method, says they were pissed off.)

The moral of the story is obviously: don't piss off your development team
(by, say, firing them).

PREFERENCES REVIEW

While I'm at it, somebody was still trying to figure out the preferences
trick. The issue has been confused by someone talking about a single-bit
gadget to the left of the date...as far as I know, this has nothing to do
with it. In fact, I can't even find this thing, but the trick still works
for me.
	1) Locate the two images of the mouse in the middle right of
	   preferences (one used for setting double-click sensitivity,
	   the other for mouse speed).
	2) Moving from left to right, click each one of the buttons
	   pictured on the mouse images once.
	3) Repeat 3 more times (a total of four left-to-right passes,
	   totalling 16 clicks altogether)
	4) Enter "change printer"
	5) In the list of printers in the upper right, click on the
	   down-arrow many times until you get to the end of the list.
	6) Now click on the up-arrow many times until you scroll to the
	   top of the list.
	7) The message "Caryn and =RJ= Love 4 Ever" appears (they are
	   married and she just had a baby, BTW).
