504.0. "Fast-Booting RAM Disk" by LEDS::ACCIARDI () Sat May 16 1987 07:50
If you've ever gotten tired waiting for a RAM disk to fill up with System
stuff, then you're gonna love this...
MAKEACV is an archiver that takes a large number of small, unrelated
files and creates one large continuous file. This means that the
boot disk will not be gronking all over the place for an insufferable
period of time.
How effective is it? Well, I can load an entire Workbench stuffed
with goodies into RAM in about one minute. Using the conventional
'Copy df0: to RAM:' method took over 2 1/2 minutes.
I have included fairly detailed instructions on how to use MAKEACV.
I have also included a sample Startup-sequence that builds the RAM
disk, and assigns all AmigaDOS symbols to RAM:. This is just like
having a third drive, and enables you to jump from applications
that need two drives without having to re-boot.
As a bonus, I have also included several useful utilities in the
Archive. DEFDISK is a small command that reassigns all symbols
to any physical disk that you specify. This is useful when using
programs that prefer to be the SYS disk. CONMAN is a neat little
mini-shell that allows command line editing and VMS-like command
recall with the arrow keys.
Credit for MAKEACV goes to Donald Wahl. CONMAN is the work of William
S. Hawes.
The archive is located in JAKE::USER2:[ACCIARDI.AMIGA]MAKEACV.ARC
