478.0. "RD50 on Amiga ???" by LAUSAN::BLANC (Phil Lausanne-CH 24-APR-1987 15:56) Fri Apr 24 1987 11:05

    Hi there
    does exist any posibilities to connect a RD50 disk drive to the
    amiga directly in daisy chain with floppies???
    Does anybody have the pin layout assignment of the external floppy
    connector ?

    thanks		Phil

re:	.0

Simple answer:	no.

Longer answer:	The RD5x series of disks uses an ST506 protocol (not compatible
		with the floppies). Also, the most common protocol today is
		SCSI ("scuzzi") which is faster. Therefore, not only can't you
		use it in a daisy chain with the floppies, it won't run
		on most hard drive interfaces.

		I think Byte-by-byte makes an ST506 interface for Amigas.

P.S.	I have an RD52 (33mb) that I'm dying to use, so let me know if you
	you have any success!

478.2has anybody tried?KIRK::KYZIVATPaul KyzivatWed Jun 17 1987 14:107
I gather no one has done this. It sure would be nice - I presume employee
prices on RD disks would be more attractive than list prices on equivalent
drives.

Do the disks for the VaxStar and VaxMate use the same interface?

478.3A2000 controller supports ST506KIRK::KYZIVATPaul KyzivatMon Jun 29 1987 09:307
I was in the Memory Location this weekend and asked about A2000 peripherals.
Apparently the disk controller will support both SCSI and ST506 devices. With
RD5x disks (and TK50 tapes?) this might be very attractive. Does the PAL
controller also support ST506? Can an A2000 power an RD5x, or would an
externally powered drive be req'd?

    	The PAL SR. controller works with ST506 drives and has an option
    for SCSI ( daughter board ). I have been told the PAL Jr. uses the
    same controller.

    	The A2000 should have enough power for a RD5x drive but, I don't
    know where you would put it. I think the A2000 drives are all
    3 1/2 in. drives ( even the hard disk ) ????

    	The TZK50 ( SCSI TK50 ) is available but high priced. I have
    access to all the specs. Now all we need is a driver ?

    	The A2000 has a 5 1/4inch 1/2 height slot, you can put any sort
    of half-height device there (floppy for bridgeboard etc). Soooo,
    the rd54 (right number) which is really a Seagate 251 (40 mb half
    height) will fit there. But I do believe you can get the drive
    cheaper through mail order.

    Can anyone tell me how to determine employee purchase availability
    and price on DEC hard drives (RD5x). Thanks.

Re: .6

Call the Employee Purchase Program at 800-235-0505 (I just got this
number out of the Digital Telephone Directory; there is a DTN number,
but they don't have it listed).

They will give out price and availability information over the phone.
