463.0. "CLImate=Terrific" by LEDS::ACCIARDI () Fri Apr 17 1987 17:44

I recently picked up CLImate, and thought I'd post my impressions.

You've all probably seen or used one of the many 'DirUtil' type
programs floating around in the public domain. CLImate was in fact
written by Chris Nicotra, the original author of the original
    'DirUtil'.

The program is published by Progressive Peripherals of Colorado.
Their standard screen is a joy to behold, and uses about the most
beautiful color (16) combinations imaginable. CLImate consumes about
90k of memory, and resides on it's own full screen. Foreground
and background gadgets are provided, but no drag bar.

The screen presents two scrolling windows, (ala Charlie Heath's design)
one for the source directory and one for the destination directory.
Buttons are available for (get this) the EXACT configuration of
your system. If you don't have a hard drive, it won't throw up
a DH0: button. There is also a gadget for swapping the source and
destination windows, and for selecting a Parent directory.

At the bottom of the screen there are four more pushbuttons labeled
'BATCH', 'RENAME', 'DISPLAY', and 'SHOWPIC'. If the 'BATCH' button
is selected, a new row of standard dos command buttons is presented,
like move, copy, delete, clear, all, etc. The 'BATCH' option is
selected for the usual file shuffling type stuff. The 'DISPLAY'
button is used for viewing subdirectories, and ASCII or HEX listings.
'RTENAME' does just that, and 'SHOWPIC' will display any IFF bitmap,
    including 4096 color HAM images.

Where CLImate really shines is in it's speed of use. Each time
a directory is accessed, a small (several hundred byte) '.fastdir'
file is created. Once a disk is filled with all of these little
'.fastdir's, you can really rip through directory trees at warp
    speed.

Another neat feature is the ability to delete, copy, or move ENTIRE
directories in one operation. CLImate will ask you if you're sure,
and the prompts always include a reference to the desired operation,
    i.e. 'DELETE SOURCE DIRECTORY?'..

To really make CLImate a great tool, it helps to have some extra
RAM. The program is not copy protected, and I install it to RAMDISK
on all my startup-sequences. It is always about a half-second away.

For $29.00, it's about the best money I've spent on my Amiga.
