458.0. "Dual Floppys?" by LEDS::ACCIARDI () Wed Apr 15 1987 09:28

Has anyone seen or heard anything regarding a dual external floppy
package from Europe? This was mentioned a while back in another
    note that I couldn't find.

I would be very interested in such a beast, since it would allow
me to postpone buying a hard drive for a while.

I was actually considering building my own. I can get a few Panasonic
JU-363 drive mechanisms. Two of these can fit inside of a standard
Amiga 1010 external floppy plastic case, but a frontpanel-ectomy
    is required.

Any news or opinions would be appreciated.

I saw a dual external floppy unit demoed last spring at a meeting of
JAUG, the Jersey Amiga Users Group. JAUG was started at Rutgers by
Perry K. (the Perry who has since become the brains behind ASDG), and
it was one of his buddies who had developed the unit. I don't know if
it ever got beyond the prototype stage, but the projected price was
pretty attractive, as I recall. You might see if Perry can put you
touch with the fellow who was working on it -- I assume Perry can be
    contacted through ASDG.

A lot of small companies offer dual (and of course single) drives
for the Amiga - for reasonable prices, too... also, every
self-respecting Amiga magazine has published instructions on how
to build one (single or dual, icnluding 5 1/4). Recently, c&t had
an article for a hack to make the Amiga boot from a 360/720 kb
    5.25" drive...

Over here, a plain drive costs ~DM300, the cheapest add-ons around
DM 400 (single) so if (when) I'm gonna buy one, I buy a ready-made
one. Calculating the cost of a drive + cabinet + cable + connectors +
a few small parts you might save DM 30 by putting one together yourself.

If I recall correctly, dual drives go for ~DM 700-750.

    One US$ = DM 1.80 currently.

There is an available Dual Drives ( internal Amiga power supply)
made by a small but good company near by , named BYTEC. It uses
Panasonic jU-363-10 and a very simple schematic that i send around
some time ago. The price is not to actractive for US folks, while
it's good here ( ~ 500 US$ ). If you want to do it yourself, let
me know and i'll refetch the schematic.

    Re: .3

Thank you for the reply, Marco. If you can find a schematic sketch,
could you upload it as an IFF bitmap? I can buy the drives for
$100 directly from a local Panasonic representative, and I can modify
    the plastic case myself.

    Thanks again.
458.5You ask, you get !CESARE::ZABOTMarco Zabot-Adv.Tech.mgr-Turin ACTThu Apr 16 1987 06:0412
The information you need are in:

I'm not sure if this is the final version ( I think there has been
a revision for don't know what reason ). If you'll have any problem
let me know and I'll send the answers with some LTA delay (Line-turn
    around).
I've been told last nite that the supply from Amiga allows THREE
panasonics with no external supply. Such a beast has been around
my Amiga Club for a while.
