441.0. "Juggler writer & MIDI" by ECADJR::BOSCH () Tue Apr 07 1987 14:07

    Did anyone get the latest AmigaWorld magazine yet? It has an
    article written by Eric Graham(sp) author of the infamous Juggler
    program. The article includes some of his famous tricks in C.
    It looks fairly interesting.

    Also, could anyone recommend a Midi Interface? I just purchased
    a keyboard (Ensoniq Mirage), and wish to hook it to my Amiga. Also,
    could someone recommend some music programs that use midi. I don't
    want to use Music Studio; I want somethings that can read what I
    play on the synthesizer.

441.1Wow! You have an Ensoniq!!!LABC::GRAYFri Apr 17 1987 20:3447

    An Ensoniq Mirage!! --An Ensoniq Mirage!!! Wow! You have one
    <eplative deleted> setup there! Please keep this file posted with
    your comments on the system!

    I am MIDIed into my Amiga with the Midi Designs MIDI interface and
    run Music Studio. I am not that happy with either of these products,
    but I bought them along time ago (right after the Amiga came out
    and products of this nature started shipping...01/86ish.)

    You are right not to buy Music Studio --I think it is pretty poor
    (with a little work though, they could make it a decent product!)
    I am not that impressed with the Deluxe Music Construction Set (by
    Electronic Arts) or the Sonix package (by Aegis) --though I have
    only seen these programs demoed. (I do not own either of them.)

    My solution, being a S/W techy, is to write my own system which will
    play/record/sequence (multi-track playback) and read/write files with
    Music Studio, so I can use its fancy graphic oriented note editor. A
    product that accepts MIDI-data "live" off of the serial port and puts
    it "live" on a note staff with auto-correction properly implemented
    (to correctly score the durration of every note) would be a major
    undertaking. Based on what I saw from Aegis, Electronic Arts, and
    Activision at the Commodore Show in February, I don't think there
    will a product that advanced "on the market" for at least six months
    to a year. Based on what I have seen, the best commercial system
    out there seems to be the Mimmetics SoundScape package, though I
    don't think it has a note-editor. (I believe it does have multitrack
    record/playback capability though.)

    In terms of MIDI interfaces, the best one I have seen is the MIDIgold
    box which has multiple MIDI IN and OUT ports.

    I am really interested in creativity-type stuff combining MIDI
    instruments (I am working with Yahmaha's DX, FB, and RX stuff), video
    (ala Genlock, Alive, VCR --I am going to get the Genlock when Alive
    ships next month), and software (Deluxe Paint, and my own custom
    stuff...) This machine is fantastic. I mixed the track "OPUS"
    off the "Art of Noise" albumn on my CD with some images from
    Kaliedascope right after I bought my Amiga and the results were
    enough to get a local night-club interested in using my stuff!!!

    Good luck with your Ensoniq Mirage.

Not too sure what a "note-editor" is, but SoundScape allows you
to edit MIDI events including note value (pitch) and note length
(duration).

441.3Mimmetics SoundScapeMILO::DONAHUETue Apr 21 1987 17:4510
    Mimmetics SoundScape package does not have note editing. I have
    been using it trying to learn how to record a 'song' and then edit
    it later which seems to be quite difficult. The documentation is
    sparse, but the software is quite powerful. We us it primarily
    for entering 'step time' track data, which is a way to enter MIDI
    note and time information so that is is played back exactly as you
    entered it.

    If anyone has any comments or questions on this software I would
    love to entertain them.
441.4Source Code Needed Desparately!!REGENT::BOSCHWed Jul 08 1987 08:479
    I am looking for any C source code that anyone has written, that
    will read from the the serial port MIDI data. I have tried
    unsuccessfully to do such as that, and I am currently getting very
    frustrated. If anyone has, or can get their hands on some sources,
    please let me know!!!

    Thanx A Lot

441.5On Fish Disk #54NOVA::RAVANWed Jul 08 1987 12:125
    Where else? On Fish disk 54, there is a directory called MidiTools
    which is said to contain "simple programs to play and record through
    the MIDI I/F..."

    Can anyone get me these files, or upload them?? I don't have Fish
    Disk 54, and I need them as soon as possible.
