Hi, this is Derek Bosch, a new user on the NOTES, but a long
user on the AMIGA 1000. I am looking for an inexpensive 2400
baud modem to purchase. If anyone knows of one, either mail
order, or from a dealer in the Boston Area, let me know.
Derek.

DEC DF224 Scholar through the Employee Purchase program for $397.00.
A superb modem ... never had a problem. Support several standards
and has an online setup menu or command line setup, and a daisy
chain telephone directory.

Try the MultiTech 2400 modem. It is an excelent modem and handles
error correction if the modem on the other end does too. It's cheaper
than the DEC modem. As for having no problems with the scholar...there
were so many here that many departments have refused to order them
anymore.

Interesting about your modem problems. We have many, many in use
here without any problems. Most were purchased in Q2. Perhaps earlier
runs had bugs. Mine hasn't failed me yet!

The Scholar that I was having so much fun with (and finally gave
up on) has been doing the tour of our department with varying
degrees of success. It appears that the combinations of phone
system types (pulse, touch tone, dial), phone connected (Ma Bell
certified vs "order TIME magazine today and receive a telephone
absolutely free"), method of connecting at the receiving end, and
terminal type (AMIGA, PRO, Rainbow, VT) has a bearing on whether
it works or not. As has been our experience, none of DEC's other
modem offerings have given us any problems with any of the above
combinations - unfortunately they are not 2400 baud either.

Derek, not that I'm trying to dissuade you from purchasing a
Scholar - I wish it would have worked for me! But I would
suggest, given that I don't appear to be the only seeing some
problems with them, that you borrow one and make sure it works in
your particular environment, if it is on your "short list", and
before you commit your hard earned cash.
