256.1 | Coronary Care | AUTHOR::MACDONALD | | Mon Jan 19 1987 10:13 | 6 |
| It is on the shelf at Memory Location. Requires a soldering iron
and the tearing down of the Amiga. The conversion is not for the
weak of heart! It really doesn't ADD 256K of RAM, but merely FREES
UP that amount by using an Eprom coded with Kickstart V1.2.

256.2 | Kickstart in ROM | ELWOOD::PETERS | | Mon Jan 19 1987 10:24 | 13 |

The Memory Location has the ROM Kickstart for $130. It replaces
Kickstart not Workbench. It also gives you 256K more memory ( the
old Kickstart RAM ).
The kit contains more than just ROMs. It contains 3 ROMs, a
PAL, sockets and Jumpers. You must install sockets for the rom and
the PAL. Remove the old ROMs ( from sockets ) and install some push
on jumpers.
When done, you can select Disk or ROMs for kickstart by the
jumper setting. The ROMs are Kickstart V1.2 .

256.3 | No option to "fall back" to V1.1 disk. | HYDRA::MOORE | W. Bruce Moore =]8^) | Mon Jan 19 1987 19:47 | 7 |
| Ah, but there is a small catch...
I was in Memory Location on Saturday. One of their machines is
running with the Kickstart in ROM. Somebody wanted to try out a
program that was not compatible with V1.2 and had to move to another
machine to run it. Apparently there is no way to load Kickstart
from disk once the ROM version is installed.

256.4 | The future? | HOUSE::FRACTAL | | Mon Jan 19 1987 22:45 | 5 |

Does the company that sells this kit support future versions
for a small fee? Or will you have to buy the kit all over again.
What was the program that didn't work. was it Ea distributed?

256.5 | Sure You Can | AUTHOR::MACDONALD | | Tue Jan 20 1987 08:03 | 9 |
| Actually ... there is a way to boot Kickstart from disk after the
new chips are installed. There is a dip-switch that can be flicked.
Unfortunately, the location of it is such that you'd need to open
the case. Although, no reason why a microswitch couldn't be brought
out to the backside of the case. That's what I did with my Epson
to switch from serial to parallel ports - a microswitch on the backside
and a tiny relay inside.

| Deluxe Video will not work properly with 1.2. I called them about
it yesterday, and they said that they are still working on a fix.
When you try to run it with 1.2, you get requesters filled with
garbage, or nothing at all. It also has problems with expanded
memory.
