| I heard that you have to tear the cover off the original package
and send it to them with a check to cover the upgrade cost.
As I have not heard a word from EA concerning this, I don't know
the specifics. I plan to give them a call about this.

230.4 | EA vs A | HYSTER::DEARBORN | Trouvez Mieux | Tue Dec 23 1986 08:51 | 13 |
| I got a demo of it at Memory Location. It is lightyears ahead of
DeluxePaint. The perspective, gradient and pattern fills,
anti-aliasing, etc. are quite nice. Plus you have masking for
airbrushing.
I was also told that Aegis will no longer sell Images. It seems
like EA has blown them out of the market....no loss, Images was
a pretty cumbersome product to use. Even worse was their hi-res
version (actually med-res). It was a VERY poor adaptation of lo-res.
The aspect ratio of the brushes, as well as the geometric draw
functions were not corrected for the different resolution. At least
EA took care of this in the design of the three resolutions of DPaint.

230.5 | Here's how. | HYSTER::DEARBORN | Trouvez Mieux | Tue Dec 23 1986 14:21 | 20 |
| Call them at 415-572-ARTS for info. Here is essentially what they
will tell you:
Send the cover of your DPaint manual, along with a check for $37.00
to Electronic Arts, Deluxe Paint Upgrade, P.O.Box 7530, San Mateo,
CA 94403.
You will get your new disk and manual in 4-6 weeks.
If you have a protected disk, and want an unprotected one, send
$57.00. If you have a protected disk and want a protected one,
send $37.00. If you have an unprotected disk, send it, and a check
for (I forgot), and they will send you a new unprotected one.
Good Luck. Upgrades are ONLY available through the mail. They
will not take phone orders. In fact, the Customer Service line
is fully automated, with pre-recorded messages.

230.6 | Quick review | HAZEL::MELLITZ | | Thu Jan 29 1987 08:07 | 59 |
| I got my update of DPAINT II yesterday. I've just tried out a little
but here goes.
It's clickable. Files that you create have ICONS that are clickable
and run DPAINT II. You don't get the pretty paint bucket screen.
That OK because I think it takes less time to load.
The screen layout looks identical. When you press the right hand
mouse button a new item has been added to the main menu. This
is for controlling perspective and background. Many menus
have new options/features.
Most of the new features are a little more difficult to use that
point and shoot. For example the perspective fill is really controlled
by a features selected in a new pull down menu ( can't remember
the name) and another menu that brought up when you right button
click the fill ICON. There's a little more to it even. You must use
the key pad (not the function keys) to control the x-y-z axis
tilts while in that mode selected from a pull down menu. All in
all for the results that you can get it worth the little extra
work.
Most of the new features are either added pull down menu options
or right mouse click on existing icons.
There now a pop out menu for print that gets displayed after
you pull down and point to print. You can control color/gray/BW,
size, and Horz/vert. From that screen. When a printout is in progress
you can stop it with a stop gadget.
On the fly you can change screen size and resolution. As will may
of the new features, this is limited by memory. I've got 512k
and may of the permutation of size and resolution are not possible.
Some don't even may bring you face to face with the GURU.
More memory limitation are evident in med-res mode when trying to
fix the background or creating a stencil. Most every thing works
in Low Res mode.
Oh the fill "pop-up" (rt button) has on really neat fill style,
dither. What accomplished is rendering. You choose a direction to
render from and when you fill and object the colors change from
on end of the object to another. For example if you Dither fill
a circle and have a color range define (from the pull down
palette menu) the circle look like a 3-d ball. Neat!
Oh well, got to go. Haven't really played all that much with
it yet but after I finish my taxes I'll play some more.

Can you believe it? I actually found a bug in DP2.
Repeat By:
Save whatever it is you are currently working on in DP2, 'cuz
you'll lose it. Having a picture up may give you a more interesting
crash. Click one of the predefined square brushes with the right
button in order to resize it. While you are resizing it (with the
right button) push the pointer up into the menu bar.
Result: either a dead screen or everlasting fireworks. In any event
the only way out is to reboot, seemingly.
The fireworks crash is the most amazing thing I've ever seen. Seemed to have
a cycle time of about 2 seconds, flashing up a continuously changing mishmash
of something that looked a little like my old picture after traveling through
a meat grinder. What'd it do, write an endless loop of garbage over the
copper list?
Oh, one thing does survive on the screen. The
S
I
Z
E
sprite stays wherever it was, but the mouse can no longer move it.

I've got another one, and this one is worse. Rubber-band lasso crashes with
fireworks whenever the lasso is too complex or too large. This may be just
(ha -'just'!) a memory problem. But you can never tell when it's going
to happen, so I just don't use that feature. But it was one of the prime
things I REALLY wanted from DPII! Oh well...

Can anyone tell me if DPaintII can produces HAM images?
The reason for asking is that I intend to buy ProWrite
and want to include some pics, logos etc into some documents.
ProWrite will accept HAM images, so...
A friend tells me that there are utilities that can convert
simple DPaint pics to HAM (Butcher??).

230.16 | No HAM mode for DpaintII | PUERTO::ALVAREZ | Miguel,from sunny Puerto Rico | Wed Mar 09 1988 07:46 | 10 |
| No, DpaintII can't produce HAM images. Digipaint can take non-HAM
pictures and convert them to HAM. Unfortunately, Digipaint works
only in HAM mode.
However, I'm pretty sure that some of the new "paint" programs
coming out, will handle all resolutions and HAM mode. I believe
Pixmate is one of them. See a review of it somewhere in this notes
files.

| PixMate can convert 32 color DPaint images into HAM, but there's
not much of an advantage in doing that. It is very useful for turning
digitized HAM images into 32 or 64 color versions. It does an
outstanding job, too.

| If your real question was whether you could use DPaint II to produce
artwork for use in ProWrite documents, the answer is probably YES.
I don't know for certain (I don't have ProWrite yet), but HAM is
usually considered the most advanced picture format, so claiming
that they support HAM doesn't mean they *require* it.
