215.0. "VT100 and PLINK" by TRUMAN::LEIMBERGER (Bill Leimberger) Sat Dec 13 1986 04:13

I need info on downloading programs from PLINK .
Can I use VT100 in Xmodem ?When I tried to do so I had problems.
The problem comes up when I start the process on the other end
and than select Receive Xmodem at home .I get the standard
request for file name . I think Plink is just looking for
the signal to start .I had a friend come by with Online an
I could not even log into TYMNET .(VT100 works great here
and while I am conversing with PLINK .I guess I need two
    answers . Is there a way I can use VT00 ? Why won't Online
get through TYMNET login ? If anyone has info on any other
package that will help I am willing to try those also .
Meanwhile I'll use Vt100 to learn more about PLINK and forward
anything I see of interest to this note .

    thanks,
    	bill

Hmmmm..... I have been using Online! with Tymnet/Plink for about
nine months without any problems... I am using 7-bit word length,
even parity, and 1 stop bit, and I set Online! for VT-100 emulation.

After you step thru the download menu, and PLINK echos 'Transfer
Starting', or some such, hit 'RETURN' before you open your download
menu. I have found that if you don't hit return, the transfer will
    not start properly.

By the way, there is an excellent terminal program on PLINK, written
by Dan James, that supports a newer protocol called 'WXmodem'.
It is useful only on PLINK so far, which is the only network to
support packeted Xmodem, whatever that is. WXmodem will transfer
files better than twice as fast as Xmodem.

The only problem with Comm132 is that there does not seem to be
any decent kind of VT*** emulation. But, Comm132 will work in
interlaced 400 line mode, allowing a full 48 lines of text on the
    screen.

THANKS ! With your help I got Online to connect with Tymnet .As
soon as the holiday crunch is over I'm going to pick up a copy .
Until then I will try StarTerm .It really mystifies me .Just for
the heck of it I tried reaching work with Starterm and could not
connect to my host , but it went through Tymnet to Plink fine .
Now I can connect with both work, and Plink with VT100 and don't
have to change anything .Oh well it's all very interesting an I
have the time so I'll download the program you mentioned an try
it . While looking for info I came across a book called Online.
(no relation) It had some neat stuff in it an was supposed to contain
coupons for free time but they had been ripped off .I plan on ordering
the book from Micro Soft press .It's not very technical but opens
up a lot of doors .

Glad you made your connections... a word of warning though, online
time to these networks can get really expensive! One month, my
combined Plink and Compuserve bill was over $200.00... needless
to say, I let my wife hide my modem until the bill was paid off.

Now I am much more careful about casual use of the networks.

I wouldn't run out and pick up a copy of Online! for use with Plink.
Use Comm132, it's just as good (and twice as fast for transfers)
and it's free. Online! will only work up to 1200 baud, regardless
of what speed you set. Use your VT100 emulator for communication with work.

    Save your money.

And speaking of CIS....I've given up on it altogether. It is far
too expensive and transfers are VERY slow. Plink is much better.

Thanks again for the advice and warnings .I don't have a major credit
card so I sent in cash up front . When I notice my balance getting
low I shoot out another money order .(checks have to clear) The
reason I asked notes for help was to cut my learning curve .
Hopefully I'll be able to upload files to the tool shed(is it still
there). This will depend how my expenses go .I made some long distance
calls to other Amiga BBS's for comparison, these were free but I
gave up the advantage of Tymnet . My feelings are that Tymnet and
Plink will be hard to beat .
