162.2 | CLI Overlay | AUTHOR::MACDONALD | CUP/ML | Mon Nov 10 1986 09:11 | 7 |
Its a speedy CLI overlay that puts CLI into a nice menu and window system. The file management portion is particularly nice. Runs faster than plain-jane CLI. Everything is in the background. Various menus get called up when you hit the right-A key plus a function key. They have it running at Memory Location for anyone that is interested.

I assume I can install it on all my system disks? How many $$$?? Does it replace the 'c' directory?
162.4 | Yeth | AUTHOR::MACDONALD | CUP/ML | Mon Nov 10 1986 15:04 | 5 |
$79 .. yes it does. Comes with V1.2 Gamma by the way since it requires V1.2 to run. Works best with extra ram: for loading and reassigning the sys:c directory (as is the case with the current c directory).

Of course you can only fit so much onto a 3 1/2" diskette.

ZING! is fantastic. After months of working with CLI, this program is a dream come true. It displays all files on the screen. You can select the files by just clicking on them. They can be copied, moved, run, printed, renamed, edited, typed, ect. directly by mouse control. It uses VMS-like wildcards too. It has a printer spooler built in (I can't seem to get it to work yet tho...might be because it is the gamma version of 1.2) I spent the weekend cleaning up all my disks. This tool made it quite easy. You can use ED directly through this program. Just double click on the name of the file you want, then click on EDIT. Voila, you are in ED. The same goes for TYPE. When the file is displayed, it is displayed one screen at a time. You can use the function keys to page forward or back through the file. You can display the file as ACSII or binary. I really like this one... Randy
162.7 | Can you substitute editors? | BACH::TENNY | Dave Tenny | Mon Nov 24 1986 08:53 | 3 |
Can you tell ZING which editor to use (like EMACS) when you hit the EDIT icon?

Yes. | |||||
162.9 | Pick what you want | ELWOOD::PETERS | Mon Nov 24 1986 11:21 | 8
RE .7 There is a logical set in the startup-sequence file to select the editor you want. Also there are logicals for where ZING is on disk, or in my case RAM-disk.
162.10 | Try C: for ZSPOOL | NCCSB::JFISHER | John B. Fisher @NCO (DTN 367-4259) | Fri Dec 05 1986 22:53 | 7 |
About the print spooler, it seems that the program ZSPOOL needs to be located in C: for it to work correctly. One word of warning, it does not seem to recognize and act on the 'CANCEL' gadget. There are some problems with ZING!. It has the normal problems that tend to be associated with a version 1 release. BUT I have to agree that this is a very nice utility, very easy to use. |
