I have seen ads for a 68020 upgrade with a math coprocessor
that supposedly can increase math intensive operations on the Amiga
by up to 500%. Two questions ...
1. The board runs less than $500. Anyone know if such
an upgrade is compatible with existing Amiga software?
2. Anyone out there have a 68020 upgrade?

In version 1.2 CA has included support for the 6010 and the 68020
processors. So, supposedly, you can jusat plug in the new processor
and go. The only mojor problem that I have heard about is that
a few software products used a instruction that is privileged on
the 68020. They are suppoesed tobe rewritting thier products to
fix this.
It appears that CA has commited to maintaining upward compatability
for the 68000 line.
Could you post the address of the manufacturer of the board?

Netch Computer Products sells a 68881 floating point coprocessor
board. They say it has a 68010 emulating a 68020. They claim a
300%-500%speed increase for mathg intensive operations.
$459 assembled. Board replaces the 68000 internally.

Actually, version 1.1 already supports the 68010 and 68020. Of the software in the 1.1 release, only the calculator has any problems (I have no idea why they didn't fix it). Fish disk 18 has a tutorial on sticking a 68010 in your Amiga. (The biggest problem is that the 68000 socket is partially covered by the disk drive.) Also included, is a program that sets up an illegal instruction trap to fix the problem of programs that use the privileged 68010 instructions in their user mode 68000 programs. No, I haven't tried any of this. My warranty is still in effect and the thought of prying open my Amiga gives me the willies. | |||||
