129.0. "Numbers Game" by JOKE::ACCIARDI () Fri Oct 03 1986 09:22

I pulled this info off of Compuserve last nite...Atari Corp, in
their first Stock Prospectus (they are going public) revealed that
150,000 ST computers have been shipped worldwide, with 60% of that
volume sent to Europe. These are Atari's own figures, so I don't
want to hear any wild rebuttals of how many zillions of STs there
are. None of us sat and counted as they went out the door anyway.
So, if one were to believe Atari's Prospectus, that makes for 60,000
STs in the USA, with 90,000 sent abroad.

According to official C-A leaks (nothing documented, so these numbers
may be bull), 90,000 Amigas were shipped Stateside as of July.

In late July, the Amiga became available in limited numbers in Europe.
Sales worldwide are expected to double with the $500.00 price cut,
as they did during the first price reduction.

Here again, these are unofficial numbers, and I personally haven't
kept track of each Amiga shipped.

As to COMPUTE! magazines recent claim that the ST had "an installed
base at least 10 times larger than the Amiga", I guess they were
off a tad. They never did reveal where they got their numbers,
but I suspect they just made 'em up!

So, even if one cuts C-A's estimates in half, Amigas are not quite
as rare as some would have you believe. And the ST volumes are
also quite pitiful compared to almost every other successfull micro
ever shipped. (Consider the millions of C'64s and 800s out there)

I guess it aint over 'til it's over!
