112.0. "DF224 and OnLine! Problem" by AUTHOR::MACDONALD (CUP/ML) Mon Sep 22 1986 10:19

I have a problem. Perhaps someone out there has a solution?

I am using an Amiga with a Sony 1311 Monitor, a DEC DF224 "Scholar"
modem, and the Online! V1.27 telecommunications software. When everything
is hooked up and running, there is a loud tone in the speaker of the
Sony which increases and decreases with changes in the volume control.
It appears to be an audio signal fed directly into the monitor through
the serial port somehow. When I remove power from the modem, the sound
disappears.

o Is it a modem problem?

o Is it a cable problem with the serial port?

o Is it an OnLine! software problem?

Of course, turning the volume down provides a cosmetic solution, but
also causes loss of the bell.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

DON'T use a 25 pin cable to connect the DF224! The Amiga brings
out non EIA voltages on that connector. I had to build my own cable
with the bare minimum number of connection. I can't remember exactly
what I hooked up. I just connected what made sense from EIA
    documentation.

Check the pinouts for the ports, they are published in the Amiga
book that came with the system, but I forget which pages...Amiga
puts +5 where the rest of the world doesn't!

If you read the manual which comes with ONLINE! you will find a description of
what kind of cable you need. I think it is pins 1-8,20,22. I bought an
"Amiga to Hayes" cable at Omnitech in Tewksbury which seems to work ok
although it only has (I believe) 1-8 and 20.

Problem was easily solved after reading the pin-outs for the Amiga.
Apparently, they have an audio signal on pins 15 and 16. I just
happened to have a pin 16 on my cable. Gave it a yank and now the
modem works beautifully. Using OnLine! and 2400 baud right now!
