| From all I have heard, most of the current software that is using
an evolving copy protect scheme will not use it in the future.
Dpaint is upgrading to a new version (supporting auto-anit-aliasign
sp?) and you will be able to pickup an un-protected disk for a mere
20$ more.

| From what I've seen about Marauder II it looks like it will be able
to copy protected SW to hard disk without requiring key disks.

workbench? If so, how would you activate/run them off the hard
disk?
Just wondering...

| My bet would be, boot off the Marauder disk and tell it to go
activate something on the HD. Then again, that would negate
what they were saying about no key disk required...

Good question. Here's an examle. I have Dpaint. I need to boot the
Dpaint disk (after Kickstart). This get's me to a CLI. Then I've
got to type Dpaint. Ech.. I believe Marauder will copy Dpaint,
but I must use a CLI to run it. Any one got any tricks on how
to use an ICON to execute a command file with a line that runs
dpaint or whatever in it... just thinking in a stream... perhaps
that should be a topic of another note.
Entries here perhaps should indicate whether they need to be run
from a CLI or are "clickable".

I hate to admit this but I am one of the few folks who don't have
Dpaint yet. Since EA is no longer protecting Dpaint (among others),
I am waiting for the unprotected version to come out.
FYI It is not difficult at all to make an Icon start a program.
1. Copy the .info file of an icon of the TOOL type (e.g. the cli icon)
to your program name.info.
2. Reopen the window where it should be located. Now you will
see an icon with the name of your program. (Use IconEd to modify
the pic.) Clicking this twice should start your application.
I am not sure about passing parameters. Maybe someone else
could add info to this.

73.8 | | AK1A::SANTIAGO | Roads? Where we're going we don't NEED roads! | Wed Aug 06 1986 12:09 | 7 |
| I think the problem is DPaint hogs too much memory to be very useful
from WBench. Besides you'd have to install Workbench on the DPaint
disk (or at the very least write a .info file to it and boot from
a standard disk, then invoke DPaint from your other drive). The
point is, writing to a copy protected disk is a no-no. Maybe when
the unprotected version comes out somebody can try it. I really think
the extra overhead needed for WorkBench will affect DPaint, though.

73.9 | | HYSTER::DEARBORN | The One to Watch <> | Wed Aug 06 1986 12:36 | 3 |
| In order to get the un-protected version of DPaint, you first have
to buy the protected version, send in the enclosed card with $20.00.
They will not sell the unprotected version 'over the counter'

73.10 | what can MARAUDER do? | KIRK::KYZIVAT | Paul Kyzivat | Tue Sep 16 1986 14:47 | 10 |
| Will Marauder (or Marauder II) make a copy of DPAINT that doesn't need the key
disk? I am not out to rip anyone off, I just want to keep the original safe
and have a working copy that is reasonable to use. Somehow I feel that I am
being ripped off if I have to pay $20 for the privilege. I would rather pay
the money for Marauder.
Where is info about Marauder and Marauder II (namely exactly what it will do)
available?

73.11 | public domain backup programs | VAXWRK::PRAETORIUS | _636741600744_ | Wed Sep 17 1986 10:30 | 9 |
| There's a semipseudowhizbang copy program on a recent Fish disk which is
supposed to be able to do DPAINT backups. If you don't mind the delay in
getting it, it would be somewhat cheaper than buying either Marauder or the EA
copying privilege. On the other hand it's public domain and you got noone to
complain to if it don't work, so ya may be better of with Marauder.
whatever,

73.12 | VIP Pro not protected | SIERRA::LANDAU | | Fri Oct 03 1986 18:34 | 13 |
| VIP Professional is not copy-protected. The license agreement
is very explicit about making only a single backup copy, however.
And you have to file a registration card with serial number and
all to get any support from them. [This unfortunately ignores
the number of books on the topic, since it is a Lotus-clone,
and the widespread expertise on the subject, too.]
I hope all this works for VIP Technologies. It's a nice
program, and I'd like to see them do more. However, since the
program is expensive, the price makes taking illegal copies very
tempting to people who think that software ought to be free.

73.13 | PD Copy Programs | AUTHOR::MACDONALD | CUP/ML | Sun Oct 05 1986 22:55 | 6 |
| There are a number of PD copy programs that will cure most copy
protection woes. One in particular is QCOPYEA which backs up EA
diskettes. Although EA supplies a second backup diskette with DPaint,
they do not supply them with most of their other programs.

73.16 | Examine the Startup-sequence) | JOKE::ACCIARDI | | Fri Oct 10 1986 13:47 | 17 |
| I have almost always been able to modify the startup-sequence of
a program to allow multitasking. (If only I had more memory!)
In general, one can do the following to multitask commercial software:
From the cli, type:
CD DF1:
run Execute s/startup-sequence
endcli
This does not work with software that utilizes the Intuition FORBID
mode, which takes over the machine, i.e. Leader Board, and others.
Frequently, examiningthe startup-sequence for device assignments,
etc. can give clues on how to fix the program to multitask. The
main limitation is memory. (I hope to have 1.5 megs shortly).
