I have been following the information about the Genlock device, and the new DigiView device. From what I understand, both are very impressive. (No I haven't seen them work, but the end results that I have seen are VERY alluring... Distributing public domain pictures may be one of the cheapest and most effective advertising ploys ever developed. I should know, since I am hooked !!) Does anyone have any informed comments? What do you see as the advantages and disadvantages of each? Who else is thinking about purchasing one of these? (Or BOTH ??) -- John B. Fisher

56.1 | Eagerly awaiting GENLOCK! | HIGHFI::MICKOL | Erie, PA. | Thu Jun 26 1986 22:34 | 10 |
The Genlock adaptor is one of the primary features of the Amiga that prompted me to buy one. I plan to use it for commercial video production. The Amiga with Deluxepaint has proven to be a capable graphics processor for such use. I just received the genlock specs from Commodore but haven't had a chance to read them in detail. Supposedly the genlock adaptor will be available in July (I'll believe it when I see it). I am about to order the Aztec C developer's kit. jim

I am planning to get either Digi-View or Amiga Live as soon as available. I want to frame grab from a 8-mm cam-corder and manipulate with DeluxePaint.

Want to know a little more about Genlock? Take a look at the latest issue of Commodore Magazine. There is a cover article about it. If you look close enough at the photos, you will see that the unit shown is a prototype. The list the price as $259.00 (as I remember). They say nothing about availability. The article explains how TV works (who cares?), then explains what Genlock is. At least you can see what the connections are. The unit plugs into the RGB port, and slides under the Amiga system box in the back. There is a pass thru for the RGB. There are RCA connections for everything else, Video in/out, stereo audio in/out. There are three knobs for adjusting horizontal positioning, tint and audio mix level. There is a 'pixel' switch with three positions: Mixed image, all computer, all video. That's about all there is to report about at this time. Not so patiently waiting, Randy
56.4 | More on Genlock | HYSTER::DEARBORN | The One to Watch <> | Fri Aug 29 1986 10:07 | 10 |
According to an article in Amazing Computing, Genlock will not be out until Christmas. It seems that they made a design change in it, causing them to have to re-FCC the unit a second time. Also reported was that there will be a professional Genlock unit coming from a company in Washington DC. Apparently they were not pleased with the specs of the Amiga Genlock unit and decided to build their own. It is reported to have a lot of BNC connections on it. No price predicted, or release date. |
