39.0. "pd software again" by MOSAIC::BANKS (Dawn Banks) Tue Jun 03 1986 13:48

Well, this is me again, distributing the latest in Amiga PD software
from the USENET.

This month's installment is two new disks (in addition to the existing
5: USENET Stuff #1-4, USENET Hack), named USENET Stuff #5 & #6. Some
of the highlights on these diskettes are:

    Micro Emacs v3.6 (with ISEARCH)
    C-Kermit (from Columbia university)
    Matt Dillon's CLI, version 2.0
    some multitasking tutorials
four text files for Electronic Art's IFF specifications
        (TEXT, Sound, Music and Graphics)
the latest in IFF .h files
    browser (workbench tool)
disksalv (something to untrash trashed disks, and it works, too)

    and a few others

As usual, everything on the disks comes with both source code and
exectable binary (via Lattice 3.03), and I've compiled and tried
everything at least once (although I don't exhaustively test
everyting). I assume that you'll have to make your own icon for
browser, as I don't recall it coming with one. Actually, you'd
probably have to make icons for everything if it matters to you,
as I don't do windows ;-), although browser is the most relevant
    here.

As usual, if you're interested, send the appropriate number of blank
floppies (certified for double sided, please) to

Dawn Banks LJO2-E4A (dtn 226-2058 if you wanna talk about it)

ps: Al Sorkin and Dave Fonseca: Your disks are in the mail as
of today (both #s 5 and 6 for both of you)

Could you send a reply telling what is on the other pd disks
you have? Like stuff 1-4. Could I still get copies of that from
you if it looks interesting? Thanks a lot.

                                             Mitch

I'll have to get dirs of those disks tonight, so don't expect a full listing
until tomorrow or Monday.

In the mean time, sure, I can make copies of the old disks too. I don't delete
any of that stuff, with the result that if you get all the disks, you'll end
up with two or three successive copies of a couple of programs. Rather than
update the old disks and have to redistribute to everyone just because I put
a new version on one of the old disks, I just leave the old disks as is (are?)
and put the new versions on new disks.

Anyway, that makes a total of 7 disks if you want Hack sources also (USENET
Stuff #1-6, USENET Hack).

39.4Can we make net-kits?COOKIE::WECKERDave L.I.P.S. WeckerFri Jun 06 1986 16:398
re:	.3

Dawn:	Is there any plan to put this software in the TOOLSHED so that we
can access it over the net? If so it would be nice to know what
requiste software we need on the Amiga to download binaries.

Thanks!

39.5that could get expensive in many waysMOSAIC::BANKSDawn BanksFri Jun 06 1986 17:1425
Generally, I delete this software from my Vax account as soon as
I've successfully downloaded and built it on the Amiga. Leaving
it on my Vax account would just use up too much disk space, and
uploading the binaries after the build would run up my phone bill
a lot (it's an interstate call).

I can make anything available on the net given a couple of days
notice, or I can leave a kermit server running on the modem in auto
answer mode, and let people get it off our Amiga themselves (although
I'm not looking to start a BBS here).

The best way that I know of to transfer binaries to/from the Vax
system is via Kermit. At least that's what I use, and it's pretty
    reliable.

So, I guess the main answer is sorry, but no. I can try to put
software in the TOOLSHED as it comes off the net (if I remember
to do it every time), but that would be only what came off the net,
which usually doesn't include binaries. This is assuming that there's
sufficient interest. I had mostly assumed that a large fraction
of people who subscribe to this note file have access to what comes
off the net, but can't/don't have time to download it themselves,
which is why I offer the service.

Anyway, any suggestions will be welcomed.
39.6XMODEM.EXE Works Too!AUTHOR::MACDONALDCorporate User Publications/MLSat Jun 07 1986 15:386
XMODEM.EXE on the VAX works well too if you have an Amiga term program
that has the xmodem protocol. Problem is you may not have 100%
success transferring with XMODEM via TSN. Perhaps the new phone
    system will change that!

I bought two weeks ago my amiga in Geneva and the problem is that I
can't find documentation about IFF routines.
Is it possible for you to send me a floppy of the IFF specifications ?
    (especially the graphic ones.)
in fact I need all what can help me for manipulating pictures done
    with Dpaint.
    Thanks for your response

39.8HACK bug.ANT::SMCAFEESteve McAfeeThu Jul 17 1986 10:3329

    Dawn,

I received Usenet Stuff #4-6 recently along with Usenet Hack.
I really appreciate the trouble you've gone to to make this pd
software available to those of us who don't have C compilers yet
(or can't download). I had one question about the Usenet Hack
diskette. I can't seem to save a character without crashing my
Amiga. I tried running Hack with two methods:

      1. At the CLI prompt:
          ASSIGN HACK_game: "USENET Hack:HACK_game"
          cd HACK_game
          hack

This works but a save crashes the machine. (menu or <shift>s)

      2. Copied the entire HACK_game directory onto another disk named
          HACK_game.

       Worked the same as above.

If this is a bug in the code then no problem. I'll live with it
until I get my C compiler. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't
    operator error.

      Thanks,

      Steve
39.9i think it's a bugMOSAIC::BANKSDawn BanksThu Jul 17 1986 14:1710
Well, I compiled and ran the thing long enough to make sure I hadn't
broken anything too obvious. Unfortunately, I don't know how to play
that game, and I don't ever have the time to find out, so I wasn't able
to wring it out as well as I'd have liked.

I do, however, remember something being posted to the net a while back
that indicated that this was a bug in the distributed sources, so I doubt
that it's an operator error.

Sorry 'bout that.
