32.0. "Polarization: An Experiment" by HYSTER::DEARBORN () Thu May 22 1986 12:19
Last night I tried an experiment. I placed a polarizing filter
over the screen of my Sony monitor to see if it had any effect on
the hi-res flicker problem. The result: no effect. I tried rotating
the filter, without any change.
It seems that the 'polarized sunglasses' theory has nothing to do
with polarization. The tinting of the lenses causes the reduction
of flicker. Rotating the lense/filter (or tipping your head to
one side while wearing the sunglasses) would have an effect if
polarization of the transmitted light was involved. But alas, no
effect at all.
I've found that the easiest and most inexpensive way to reduce the
flicker of the hi-res display, is to reduce the luminence level
of the color palette from full to about half.
It works. Save the sunglasses for the beach.
