5.4 | how about a 5-1/4 ?? | MTBLUE::PFISTER_ROB | | Tue Jun 16 1987 12:04 | 13 |
| I have assisted people in building 5-1/4" drives from IBM-pc drives,
but didn't have the $$ to build on myself at the time.
if you can get a good deal on a 96-tpi ibm-pc drive, you can build
the unit for the cost of a power supply ($5.00?) and some jelly-bean
parts, like AND gates, and the connectors. The total cost of the
unit I helped build was about $50. Worked with transformer fine,
and as an 880K amiga-dos disk
I could scrounge up the plans if anyone is interested, I plan on
building one eventually.

| re: plans, i'm interested...
any particular brands & model numbers you recommend/don't recommend?
(shopping for a good deal, wondering if all 96-tpi drives are of
equal quality)

5.6 | Yet Another External Drive Question. | DNEAST::SEELEY_BOB | | Fri Feb 24 1989 16:00 | 11 |
| I thought that I'd revive this old note. I'm in the process of
purchasing a new external 3 1/2 drive for my A500. I have seen
the approximate price range through recent magazine ads.
My question is: are there any drives that I should avoid?
I realize that drain on the A500's supply must be minimal,
and it would be nice to have a passthrough, but are there any
real dogs out there? I'd like to by the least expensive one
I could put my hands on, if it were reliable. Any opinions or
experiences in the Great Collective Mind of the notesfile?
