284.0. "Just a few views from where I sit....." by CAMONE::WAY (Got my mojo workin') Fri Nov 13 1992 12:00

I'm a pretty easy going person, for the most part, but I've got
a few things I wanna clear the air on.

First off, I'm getting a little tired of the term Fascist Moderator.

All of you folks in here have it pretty easy. You push the limits, you
get away with stuff that would be SHUT down in nanoseconds in other
files, and yet you still complain about the moderation of this file.

When the moderators do their jobs, and set something hidden or
delete a note, not only are we inundated with mail that reminds me of
a friends of mine's spoiled brat kid ("why me, he was doing it to", or
"you didn't set him hidden" -- I'm always tempted to reply "Because
I'm the moderator, that's why"), not only are we inundated with that,
but it's followed by a bunch of entries in the file that further serve
to question, or push, or bait the moderators.

I'm a little tired of it. Even at a "kidding" level, I'm a little tired
of it.

If you really WANT Fascist moderation, no problem, I'll be glad to oblige.
We'll shut down the junk notes, start deleting notes that have nothing
to do with the topic, and in general hold every single topic in this
file to the absolute letter of the law. Believe me, that would make
our jobs a lot easier.

We do this as a favor, if you will, to enable this conference to be up
and running (for whatever time leisure time notes have left). It doesn't
leave you with a very good feeling at the end of the day when you've
been questioned, whined at, called names, and in general been a target,
all for something you're doing to help other people out.

Get with the program people. You've got a pretty good thing going here.
We're all going to have differences of opinion, for sure. But if you're
in a meeting for your job and you have a difference of opinion with
another {engineer, technician, specialist, whatever} do you sit there
and whine or call names or whatever? I'd bet not.

You know the rules. Follow them. That's all we ask..........

Gotta admit that the constant baiting of moderators and the ensuing
predictions of how long the offending note will last is a more than a
    little childish.

As someone who has baited a few moderators, I think I can speak
for many in this file that we do appreciate the job you guys do,
and unfortunately, our electronic roughhousing sometimes turns
the corner. I'll take this opportunity to symbolically buy
you moderators an ice cream cone - the universal symbol of 'patching
things up'.

Hip, Hip, Hooray!
Hip, Hip, Hooray!
Hip, Hip, Hooray!

For you are jolly good fellows,
Everybody join in:

For you are jolly good fellows - not one of us can deny!

Ever grateful.

I've been doing some soul searching lately and would like to publicly
apologize to Mac. I personally know how difficult it is to moderate a
conference (I currently mod 6 of them, only 1 non-work related). The
mods in here put up with a lot and do a fine job.

The recent thread in 170 seems a little harsh and unnecessary. I'd
suggest people cool it. You may or may not know that Corporate
Security (network police) monitors the notes conferences. In this day
where people have nothing better to do than to play Big Brother and
contribute to the downsizing effort, it's too risky to post what's been
posted. I can name a few conferences where Big Brother has had some
people fired and/or put on warning within the last week. This will
only get worse until the company is well enough off and we're all too
busy to be patroling the net.

    I'm with 'ya on this one Mile H. I also mod a bunch of conferences;
the Big Brother scenario, as well as the potential for ill
feelings should make everyone pause and think for a moment before
    conitnuing any hostile action.

I'm with Mike and Yoseff... Sometimes our emotions get the better of us
when we write.... I would never be a mod because I don't have the hard
skin to take all the crap. People tend to forget the these notesfile
are DIGITAL property and subject to the First amendment and the mods are
the ones that personal will jump all over when someone complains. I
thought Mac/Mods stepped in at the right time when they saw where
    the note was heading.

Lets trying working with the Mods instead of trying to see what we can
get away with before the Net Police come crashing down on us....

I'd like to suggest that a couple of those notes in 170.* be deleted
by the author before the mods have to do it and start thinking about
    shutting us down!

    I agree with -.1.

I've been a pretty big offender at times, and sometimes entered notes
at night, only to go back, re-read them and delete them before anybody
else got to see them, cause what I thought was appropriate when I
entered it, I realized WASN'T when I went back and re-read it. I have
the utmost respect fer the mods these days, and feel some of the
comments made elsewhere in this notesfile about the mods to be totally
    out of line.

Thanks guys.

I just want to point out that as Moderators, we are STRIVING for consistency
all the time, but we are human, and subject to the same moods, ups, downs,
and getting baloney from management just like all of you. So, we are not
always perfect.

We ARE open to comment, complaint, and questions. A simple VAXmail,
written in an calm, non-hostile adult manner will ALWAYS receive the mods
attention.

We do allow a lot of leeway in this conference, and sometimes this is
viewed as inconsistency. It is not meant that way. I look at it
(in rugby terms of course) as the same as when a ref lets a team
"play the advantage". If you ALWAYS step in at the first sign of a
problem, you disrupt the flow, and it might straighten itself out
anyway.

It was a good point about the network police. Lest anyone think that's
baloney -- BELIEVE ME, it's the TRUTH.

Here's hoping that things get back to smooth sailing,

Just to carry 'Saw's comment a little further...

I used to question this stuff too until last week when I had a personal
encounter with Corp. Security and Corp. Personnel. Corp. Security saw
a memo in the non-work-related conference I mod making light of recent
layoffs. They in turn had Corp. Personnel review it and both filed a
complaint against the author. The details are still up in the air, but
the point is that they're out there.

Like I said, this will happen until we're too busy to consider Big
Brother operations a priority. We've lost enough people out of here, we
    don't need to lose anymore.
