| I watched that, too.
That game was called Harnusse. There was no string on the
pole. It was kinda like a very long fishing rod with a
wood cylinger on the end. this puck-like thing was placed
on the end of this set of rails. The batter swung the pole
much like a golfer would, although the pole was much longer
than a golf club.
And, there were no offensive players in the field. That is,
all the offensive team bats and then they switch places. The
defenders have these large wood things that look like placards.
They use them to stop the puck-like thing. They even threw them
into the air, much like most of us did back when we were kids
and playing baseball.
The one fella said he got 72 or so points. He said he hit one
of the puck-like things 300 yards.
Interesting game. Sometimes I wonder what prompted such a game.

| I think that this is part of a series on The Discovery Channel. I caught
a part of this, too. I was flipping channels and I saw all these people
that looked like they were throwing stop signs into the air to stop balls
being hit by a very flexible golf type club. I especially liked the guy
driving considering he was about as un-golf-ly looking as you possibly
imagine. I mean Craig Stadler has nothing on this guy.

| Scott,
I used artistic license to describe the thing they were whirling
around. The overall length of ~10 feet allowed the tip to wrap around
the commentators legs, if you remember that part. That's why I used
the string part of the whip.
not taken personally though.
Dear MtM or somebody else with privs;
Since this is a new note, I have a problem with the (weird) part of
the title. Sorta could be interpreted as 'merican arrogance because of
NIH or NPH. Could we have it modified to something like (unusual)?
'preciate it
I remain,

Kev, weird could also mean supernatural or of the occult, like in
Shakespeare's day....
If you are the author, you can change the title. Just look up
set note in notes help.

You still should be the author. As long as your name is on it.....

I'm personally fascinated by the Scottish sport of heaving telephone
poles. Definitely a "manly" sport.

The Caber Toss.
If you've ever seen it in person, it's an amazing thing.
Strangely enough, it's the only sport at a typical Scottish that is not
"standardized".
For example the shotput, hammer throw, bale toss, all of those have
more or less standard weights. However, if I remember correctly, the
caber only has to be a certain length, possibly width, and the weight
can really vary.
The typical competitor at the Scottish games looks like he just stepped
out of any NFL offensive line. And for the games at least, it's not
at all unusual for Bike shorts to be worn under the kilt, along with
a weight belt for back support.

Well, it's athletics first, authenticity second 8^)
I've always liked the saying "Why nothing's worn under the kilt".
If you think about it, it makes perfect sense.....

Speaking of Kilt's
Tomorrow (and maybe Sunday, I dunno) someplace in New Cowshire
is something called "The Highland Games". Haven't the foggiest idea
what they are so therefore, this is the appropriate note. Right?
Also,
heard that the English gave bagpipes to the Scots as a joke
bu thtta they haven't gotten it yet!
many -> ;^)
