260.0. "SPORTS as a Microcosm of Life" by CAMONE::WAY (At 6', 245, from Parts Unknown) Wed Apr 22 1992 13:08
Long ago, and far away, in another iteration of SPORTS, I had an
inspiration and wrote a little easy on why Sports is a microcosm
of life.
I just found it as I was cleaning out some stuff, and I felt like
putting it back in *this* version of SPORTS.

Well, seriously speaking, Sports, in all its iterations, is
a microcosm of life.
In athletic conflict, man replicates the classic struggle of his
existence from first emergance from the soft, delicate warm world
of the womb, into the harsh, cruel existence of reality, to his
ultimate demise and death, and final rotting unto the dust of the
earth from whence he came.
The striving for victory in pure athletic competition is a metaphor
for man's aspirations towards personal glory, and the attainment
of heaven. The striving towards personal improvement is in reality
a subconscious desire to become more like our Creator.
Within the microcosm of life you have all the conflicts, the struggles,
and the different personalities commonly encounterd in the real
game, Life.
Within the microcosm of Sports, is yet another microcosm, that of the
SPORTS notes file. SPORTS notes represents Man in all his imperfect
existence. Through noting Man tries to understand himself, and
reconcile his sordid existence to his belief or non-belief in the
afterlife.
Movies are a similar metaphor for life, and Man, in all his sentiency,
will naturally explore the dualities, commonalities, and co-existent
factors between the two forms of expression...
Perhaps that is why we often digress in here.
Yet again, there is sometimes an aura of inadequacy amongst the noters,
in that we grovelling mortals are not paid millions of dollars for
what we do, nor do we hear the cheers of the adoring faithful and
forget for a time no matter how brief our frail mortality. Thus
we often digress to forget for a moment that we are not of the
chosen few gladiators shown on Saturday Afternoon Baseball, or
Monday Night Football...
Sports is a microcosm of life, and in that life the variety is
what sustains us all.

| As unimpressive today as it was then. All that wordage and not one mention
of Rugby, Snuffy, Wilt-Russ, Hank Gathers, DH, Donks, Jordan, Duke, BoSox, or
any of the thousands of other ratlets in this distinguished forum.
Yawn.

| Geezus 'Saw, a real Broons fan don't use woids like dualities
or sordid. He may do sordid things, but he don't know what the
woid means. A true Broons fan don't even know how to read!
