It was very hard to leave Walter Payton, Fred Bilitnikoft, Randy Gradishar,
Steve Largent and Kellen Winslow off my list. Gary Anderson and Morton
Anderson are definately better kickers than George Blanda. But with all of
his last second kicks and come from behind victories as a backup QB, I'll
put Blanda on my team anyday.

I mentioned Ben Davidson because he was such an imposing figure, at a time
when most DL were shorter. And because he was "The meanest SOB in the valley".
I think he was the prototype later refined by guys like Alzado, Deacon Jones
etc etc etc...
Alex Karras was GREAT also.
Has anyone mentioned Sam Huff? Sam Huff almost singlehandedly made
defense a spectacular part of the game.
In the era in which Huff played, defense was considered the poor sister.
Offense garnered the media attention, the better salaries. Then Huff
came along. He had a nose for the ball, he was a hard hitter....
This is a great topic, but it is so tough to pick ONE dream team...8^)

| I liked Huff also 'Saw. The Jints were my fav team when I was knee-high
to a fire hydrant. And Huff says the best and toughest guy he ever
played against was Jim Brown. Remember when Brown would take so long
to get up after a play? Someone asked Huff about it and he said para-
phrase of course, " Yeah, he might look like he's havin' a hard time
gittin' up, but it ain't nuthin like the hard time I have gittin'
him down" I was PO'd when he was traded to da 'Skins.
Speakin' of Davidson, the one play I'll always remember was he
spearin' Lenny Dawson long after the whistle had blown. Half the
Chief team went after him. He got his butt kicked but if I
remember correctly, it took the Chiefs out of their game and the
Raiders took 'em. What games, those Chief-Raider matchups.

I've seen films of him hitting Brown, and I think Huff is just being
modest. Those two were definitely a couple of Studs, long before the
term became popular.

| My favorite Ben Davidson highlight came vs. the COlts and Johnny
Unitas.
Old Johnny U. was flushed from the pocket - and yes, scrambling - he
saw a hole and started running towards the first down marker (okay,
running is stretching it - but being ambulatory in a forward manner) -
and old Ben was on the ground. He kicks up his leg just as Johnny U.
"Rambles" by him - and hits him in the <insert Hawk's favorite boxing
quote here> - as you cain expect - ol JOhnny crumbled like a Drake's
Coffee Cake.
Classic.
I couldn't pick one dream team - but a dozen of them.
I can't believe Metz picked the Fridge - he's not even the best nose
tackle in the NFC Central!

| The cheap shot by Davidson against Len Dawson was the cheapest shot I've
ever seen. I remember it well. It was late in the fourth quarter and the
Chiefs were ahead by 1 or 2 points. It was 3rd down and about 10 yards to
go for a first down. All the Chiefs needed was one first down to run out
the clock and ice the game. Dawson dropped back to pass and couldn't find
a receiver. He then ran for about 15 yards and a first down. Long, long after
he was on the ground, Davidson speared him in the middle of the back right
in front of the Chiefs bench. The refs threw the flags immediately. Otis
Taylor(who was half the size of Davidson) jumped right off the bench and
started swinging at Davidson. Then the rest of the Cheifs joined the rumble.
More flags started flying. It took the refs a while to get control back.
It ended up with personnal fouls against both teams and the refs made them
play the down over. The chiefs failed to get a first down and had to punt.
The Raiders then got into field goal position and kicked the winning field
goal in the final seconds. The Raiders won the game because of a blatant
foul and I've hated them ever since.

| Sam Huff MAY have been a GOOD player, but it was Chris Schenkel who
made him famous. Let's remember that football was still struggling for
exposure, and the Gints were the only team on New England TV. I
watched a lot of those games, as they were the only pro games in town.
Anyway, Schehkel was constantly referring to the tackle being made by
Huff, or, "..and Huff in on the tackle." Lots and lots of time, Huff
was either NOT in on the tackle, or was in on the latter part of a gang
tackle. I'm not blaming Huff about this hype, it was V-head.
Chuck Bednarik was a mean SOB.
I didn't see all the replies, so I'm wondering if anyone named Butkus
to their team? What a player!

Why did I pick the Fridge?
What I want in a nose tackle is a guy that stacks up the offensive
line. A guy that takes up 3 offensive lineman. A huge guy that can stop
a running play just by throwing his weight around. The Fridge is that
guy. He's a shadow of his former self now but he was a great nose
tackle his first few years in the league.
He gets bonus credits for doubling as a running back in short yardage
situations... :-)

Butkus. The epitome of the mean middle LB. Makes Singleterry look like

Butkus.
Mean middle LBs I can think of:
Butkus
Nobis
Nitschke
Punishment, punishment, punishment.
Coolest comment by a mean LB:
I don't want to hit the guy so hard I knock him unconscious.
Then he misses the pain. I want to hit him so hard that
he stays awake, and a little snot dribbles out of his nose.

LT's quote is great. But the best is the Jack Tatum quote about the
perfect hit (and please, no Darryl Stingley ratholes). Tatum
absolutely *crused* Sammy White of the Vikings (may have been in the
Super Bowl).
Tatum said it was his best shot: "Sammy be laying there, head shaking,
body quivering, eyes rollings and crying out for his mama".
Love that line. ANd remember the hit. Brutal.
Was it Lambert or someone else that said the perfect hit would be one
where the helmet flies off the body - with the head still in it?
