| When I was a kid, you bought the bubble gum (primary concern) and got
the cards, hoping they were of your favorite players.
Nothing like today.
And they were trading cards. I mean you traded them. If you had a
Choo Choo Coleman, and you didn't like him, and you wanted a Milt Skowron,
you traded....
Today, everyone is too occupied with MONEY.....

Didn't Topps recently do away with the bubble gum? (No big loss, the
stuff tasted like cardboard coated with pink wax.)

the sportly contests of flipping and leaning???

Nah.
Bazooka had a secret ingredient. Must've. Whenever I chewed Bazooka
I played first base like Gil Hodges, and I hit the ball like Carl
Yaztrzemski. I still ran like Yogi Berra, but hey, the gum couldn't
go EVERYTHING....

| 'Saw, you're right, the only purpose for the cards today is money.
And folks start whining when players try to get a fair share of the
action by charging to autograph them.

| 1) Hawk - look for the UD basketball sets in about a month or so...
2) It depends. A lot is based on money, but not everything. It's
getting way out of proportion. I still try to put together
Detroit sets though. It's amazing what some cards go for now
too. Guys no one has heard of because he's a rookie. Sheesh.
3) I have a problem with a guy making $3-6 million/year asking $15
for an autograph. That's not right. If it were someone like
a Mays, Snider or Unitas, that may have made $200,000 a year
or a career, I don't have as big a problem with it. They were
stars, didn't get the $1.2 million an Eric King demands.

| One compromise many athletes are doing (Barry Bonds comes to mind) is
that they will give free autographs, but they _personalize_ them (ex.
"To my #1 fan Mike Childs, warm regards Wilt." as opposed to "Wilt
Chamberlain"), which should make an autograph fan happy, but also P.O.s
the businessmen, because the value on a person. autograph goes down.

Cards...My family has cards...
My dad's got about 200 of his baseball cards that they used to give out with
cigarette packs from 1933-1935. Babe Ruth cards, Jimmy Foxx cards (triples),
you name it we've got it...
He's even got the old football cards. He's also got these neat cards called
indian trading cards. They showed various Indian chiefs and indian scenes
along with various cowboy scenes. Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Custer's stand.
Never had them appraised, still stores them in an old shoebox. Doesn't care
to know how much they are worth. Occasionally he'll go through them if he
sees something on the news about xxx card is worth $5k or so but he has no
intrest in selling them.
It's still alot of fun to look at them though.

| Metz...
Kind of like my baseball cards. They mean more to me as a memory of
my childhood, the long hot summer afternoons where I'd line them
up for my imaginary team of which I was the All-Star manager, the
breathless expectation when I'd get a pack of bubble-gum, and hope
to get some new and exciting cards...
I don't care if Nolan Ryan's rookie care *is* worth 1200 bucks, that money
couldn't replace the pride I had in 1969 when they won the champeenship
and I had all kinds of Mets cards...
No, money won't touch that. Unfortunately, that's what the people of
today forget...

| I'm slowly buying Topps football cards, to round out the 1976 set. It
was Payton's rookie year, but that wasn't important to me.
What was ?
It was the first year that I collected football cards. My parents
wanted to trash them, and I didn't take the best care of them (circled
stats on the backs of a lot of them). But they were special.
A pack cost 10 or 15 cents then, and the logos were airbrushed off.
Every player was NOT photographed, and that was okay.
I was 11 years old, and when I pull them out, it's easy to remember
Southeast San Diego, and going to S&M Market on 28th and K street to a
couple more packs so that I could get my OJ Simpson or Chuck Foreman
that I had been hunting high and low for.
Walter Payton ?
Who the hell was he ?

| My dad gave me an old shoe box two years and inside was a *MINT* condition
stack of just about the entire 1963 Topps NFL set. Rookie cards that
year were David "Deacon" Jones and Bob Lilly. And the Jim Brown card was
perfect.
I quickly bought a box of card liners and a copy of Beckett's and sat down
and pounded a calculator. Shocked the hell outta me and stunned my dad.
Jim Brown alone goes for $125, if I recall.
We still have the set and I've been dabbling in the hobby ever since. I'm
sure glad he didn't throw out that shoe box. My others from back then
are gone but that one survived.

| Doc,
Flipping cards was similar in a way to the card game War.
You'd stand opposite your opponents, and "flip" your card, so that it
would flutter to the ground. Whoever's card landed heads up, won.
If both were heads or both were tails, they stayed "in the pot"....
I never flipped a lot except for fun, because a lot of my cards were
Red Sox cards.
Many of my cards are written on also. If a guy changed teams, I'd write
the new on one, stuff like that.
But many of them are untouched:
Nolan Ryan (rookie) -- this is the famous controversial
card from the court case.
Seaver (Mets)
Roberto Clemente
Willie Stargell
Yaz
I'm not big into going to shows and stuff, but I'd like to own a Ted Williams
card.

We used to flip them against the wall, closest one to the wall won.
Leaners against the wall paid double. If you landed your card on
theirs, card on top won, even if part of the bottom card was closer to
the wall.
When we went to public school, we had a half day of Christian doctorin
classes at your local church, thursday afternoons.
We had this one nun that would come up to us and inform us that
card tossing was against the school rules. She then told us we could
either have our cards confiscated, our play against her.
Lets just say she was the Wyatt Earp of card tossers. She seldom lost.
If she is still alive today, her collection must be worth a fortune.
Last I knew, she had a cabinet loaded..............

I collected cards throughout the 1970s and still have most of the
baseball and football cards Topps produced in that decade (all of the
baseball sets 1972-81). While I did the flipping and bike spokes
thing, it was only with doubles and players I didn't care about.
It didn't have anything to do with money, but I was one of these anal
retentive types that wanted to have every card in a set and took pretty
good care of them. When the money started to come in in the early 80s,
I got out.

Send me mail if you've got a list, Doc. 1976 football is one of the sets
I didn't complete, but I've got a lot of the cards in the set.

| I was never much of a card collector. Oh, I used to get them when they
started showing up in March and April but they were played with,
flipped and so forth and generally tossed after the season. If I
collect anything in sports, it's books. The only thing I have that
might be valuable someday is a complete set of Boston Breakers programs
and stat books and USFL Media Guides from the 1983 inaugural season. I
have lots of Patriots stuff from my job but that's about it.
I seldom have to buy Patriots stuff either. When friends/family are
stuck for gift ideas at Christmas or my birthday, I get more.
Someone once said that the truest Hall of Fame is the card collection
from one's youth - those cards of one's heroes saved through the years.
Whoever said that probably isn't far wrong.

Anybody see that blurb on the news about the new "True Crimes" trading
card series that just came out? You can get Al Capone, J. Edgar
Hoover, as well as Ted Bundy, Charles Manson, Richard Speck, and the
very latest, Jeffrey Dahmer. Pretty weird, I'd say.

| That game that Al Miola(?) mentioned awhile back is exactly one of the
schoolyard games I played in. There was one other where you'd set up 1
or more cards on an angle against the wall, and proceed to "shoot" them
down. Last card down gets the whole pile...
Schoolyard games were the *only* reason I bought baseball cards. After
awhile, I got so good that I'd win alot more than I'd lose. Then, the
only reason to buy more was that the cards became useless from all the
sliding on asphalt and high-speed contact with cement foundations, that
in order to keep beating the other kids, I needed fresh supplies. Then,
I got smarter and realized there was no need to spend candy money on
new cards. I began challenging the rich kids with all their new cards.
Part of the fun was letting them win back some of my crappy cards to make
them think they're doing great, and all the while winning up all of
their good cards. That was my idea of "trading" cards! :-)

Does anyone remember the old Chip Hilton series of books?
I had the whole collection, had to be 30 or 35 of them.
Got tossed out by dear old Mom too. I wanted to give/buy
the whole collection for my nephew who's just getting
interested in sports. Anyone know where I might find
these books?
Thanks.

Go to Newbury Comics. They have all of those sets. While I think that
"Mass Murderers" are morbid, "Coup d' etat" (concerning the JFK
assissination - had them for a year), "Friendly Dictators", and "Iran
Contra" are all great sets, with some facinating historical facts, good
art, and biting satire.
I recommend them highly.

Slash, that's so true. Supply and demand. Now so many kids are
pint-sized brokers, and with the suit against Topps, you have 50
different people printing cards, and everyone is buying entire sets.
I used to pride myself on buying cards a couple of packs at a time -
doing things the old fashioned way. Now, it's crazy.
And somehow, a lot of the fun has gone out of it. I like making money,
and I get a kick out of having cards and comics make big money, but I
see so many people turning it into a business now, why the hell caint
they just stick to stamps, coins, and gold/silver ?
Damn.

| Mike, the Chip Hilton books are probably still available in any decent
Children's book store. Or, you can check Books in Print and see if
they're still published. They were written by Clair Bee, legendary
basketball coach of Long Island University. I remember reading some of
them when I grew up - Chip Hilton was most cool. Played 3 sports, only
child of a widowed mom, worked in a pharmacy part time in both high
school and college and refused an athletic scholarship because it would
ruin the purity of his sport.
Doc, even when I was buying cards, entire Topps sets were available
then but no one ever dreamed sports memorabilia would take off the way
it has. I agree that the boom in this area has ruined a lot of things
and had some unfortunate results - paying for autographs being one of
them - but I understand why it happens.

I remember playing a lot of cards in the schoolyard where the nuns
didn't seem to mind. They only time they took a nutty was when we
started playing with a series of "Famous Movie Monsters" cards.
They told us they were a profane and blasphemous misrepresentation
of God's beautiful creatures. (like a slug isn't ugly, right?).
They did a school-wide roundup of those babies.

Now that brings back memories! (Don't think I'd have been able to
remember any of the names-- what were the names of Hilton's bad guy
rivals?)
I do remember having a hard time swallowing the tear-jerking story of
how Chip's dad was killed at the foundry when a pallet of flower pots
or something fell on him. Clair Bee could really lay it on thick if he
had too...
