Joe,
I'd like to offer an interesting twist if you thinkit won't be
too much of a bother. Not only do you pick the winners but then you
grade your picks from 1 to 15 or how ever many games there are. If you
hit your number 1 pick you score 15 if you hit your 15 th pick you score
1..

I like this idea better too. We still gonna use the spreads? When
you send me your picks assign a point value on each game from 1 to 18.
You can only use each point value once (i.e. only one game worth 18
points, one worth 17, etc. down to one worth 1 point). Most total
points wins. Sound good?
I'll enter my picks in this note so everyone knows I won't be cheating.
Of course, unless you guys trust me. :^)

If we do use the point system, let's do it against the spreads.
It won't be too interesting if we have everyone putting down 18
on Florida-Notre Dame and the like... ;-)

| Just a little bit of clarification on the contest. Unless otherwise
noted on your picks, I'm assuming that the number that you put next to
your pick is the POINT value you want for that game and not the RANK of
the game. In other words, if you have a "1" assigned to a game, that
is your 1-point game and not your 18-pointer. The only reason I am
bringing this up is that a couple people have done their picks that way
(By rank, not points).
If you have already sent in your picks and you need to change or
clarify this send me mail. Otherwise, all picks that don't specify how
they're done will be scored by the point value assigned to each game.
If you haven't sent them in yet, it would make it a little easier for
me if you put the point value on each game instead of the rank. This
will make it a little less confusing for me. Thanx.

Don't think it would have mattered much, B.A. The Sooners ran at
will in the game last night, too. I think Mike Gaddis got his 100+
yards rushing and the fullbacks were dragging 'Hoo defenders down
the field ten yards at a pop, too. Defending the pass was actually
cited as Virginia's strength, as they somehow finished #1 in the
ACC in total defense. The final total was well over 500 yards total
offense for Oklahoma, and Virginia mounted only two drives all night,
one each at the end of each half, the first aided heavily by
penalties. I think you just picked the team with the wrong talent
makeup plus emotional outlook going into this particular game...

Iowa has conditionally accepted a bid to the Copper Bowl. They must beat

The Holiday Bowl will have the winner of the Michigan St-Illinois game

| All indications are that ND will play Texas A&M in the Cotton. There are
a couple of things that could mess that up.
If'n Alabama loses either the Auburn game or the SEC championship,
Florida St is likely to move to #2 and end up playing Miami in the
Fiesta. However, Miami doesn't want to play Florida St again. The
coalition requires #1 to play #2 if'n it can.
Which brings us back to A&M who still hasn't clinched its conference.
Assuming they do win against TCU and Texas they could possibly host Miami
which would put ND in either the Sugar or the Orange.
But it looks unlikely that Miami will play in the Cotton and if ND wants
to play the Aggies it should root for Alabama to win the rest of their
games.

| ND knows the Cotton. Lasted time there they were blown out by A&M,
Jan 1 '88 ah believe but had sdome big wins over Texas and Houston
there. I think ND is 3 ( W's over UT (2) and Houston ) and 2 ( losses
to UT (1) and A&M).
Dallas is a great party area. Loved whence Iwas in training there in
'87. The Cotton Bowl itself uis a tad disappointing. Walked around
the area a bit in March and let me tell ya, with that wind whipping
around, it's one cold stadium. Seems like 10-15 D. colder in that
old joint.
If it's the Orange that'll be three out f the last four years.
Twice against CU and now maybe NU. Hopefully mebbe the Sugar,

| I think here's the way this all goes:
The Big 8 goes to the Orange. The SEC goes to the Sugar. The SWC goes to
the Cotton.
Then comes the Big East, ACC and Notre Dame. The highest rated of these
3 plays the highest rated of the first 3. Right now that would be Alabama
and the Sugar Bowl. That happens unless 2 of these 3 are #1 and #2, which
might happen if'n Alabama loses.
What exactly happens after the bowl is determined for #1 is up for grabs,
as in money grabbing. Whatever they think will make the most money is how
it will turn out.
The schools themselves are likely to get caught up in the money grabbing.
Already, Miami has grumbled about having to go to the Sugar Bowl. They'd
rather stay home, than you. They've also started bad mouthing a possible
Florida St rematch.
In any case, getting back to the Irish, ND has the third pick being the
lowliest in the rankings.
And of course, a loss by Miami, Alabama and/or Texas A&M could scramble
everything.

Yeah, fer sure the Fiesta could get feisty. #1 is supposed to fight, I
mean play, #2, if'n they can. But this is a lot like Riddick Bowe, who's
supposed to fight Lennox Lewis. But as the saying goes, money talks.
Miami is already complaining about not wanting to possibly play Florida
St. They just keep their show local and mop up against whoever wins the
Big 8.
BTW, what happens if after 4 quarters Alabama and Florida are tied in the
SEC championship? Do they go into extra innings? Penalty kicks?

| Assuming that Nebraska can beat Kansas St, the SEC championship is really
about all that's left. The Sugar gets the winner of the Alabama-Florida
game. The loser may not necessarily be the #2 since this is determined by
who is the higher ranked between the loser and Georgia. Just because
Florida won their division doesn't mean they're #2. Right now, Alabama is
ranked #2, Georgia is #8 and Florida is #15.
The SEC has always used national rankings to determine who gets to host
the Sugar Bowl in the case of ties.
So that if Alabama beats Florida it looks like
Alabama to the Sugar
Georgia to the Citrus
Florida to the Gator
But if Florida beats Alabama it looks like
Florida to the Sugar
Alabama to the Citrus (assuming they don't drop below Georgia)
Georgia to the Gator
Then there's the issue of where Miami. Florida St and Notre Dame play.
Like the rest of us, we'll have to wait until this weekend and see who
wins the Florida-Alabama game.

Subject: Bowl coalition may backfire
Date: Mon, 30 Nov 92 16:22:45 PST
Commentary
That illustrious brigade of neon jackets -- the folks who run the bowl
coalition -- had better hope like heck Alabama beats Florida in the SEC
Championship game Saturday. The entire concept of the alliance rides on
it.
Should the Crimson Tide fall, the coalition will be branded a sham
before the first ball is kicked. That's because the system will have
failed in its primary objective -- to create the best possible matchup
for the postseason.
An Alabama loss would leave the nation with two unbeaten, untied
teams -- Miami and Texas A&M. And the coalition would be unable to match
them up for the national title, even though Miami is free to play in any
bowl.
We didn't need the coalition to come up with this scenario. In fact,
that's what the alliance was supposed to avoid. But the neon brigade
left a major loophole in its myriad of selection guidelines -- its
reliance on a media panel to direct its hand.
With the intention of trying to create the best possible matchups,
the coalition uses the Associated Press ratings as the basis for its
selections. But the system isn't foolproof.
Right now, the AP poll ranks 10-1 Florida State third behind No. 1
Miami and No. 2 Alabama, with 12-0 Texas A&M fourth. If Alabama loses
and everything else remains the same -- which is expected since each of
the others have completed their regular seasons -- those ratings would
have Miami first, Florida State second and Texas A&M third.
Under coalition guidelines, Miami and Florida State would then meet
in the Fiesta Bowl for the national championship. In fact, about the
only iron-clad rule in the book is that if the Nos. 1 and 2 teams aren't
committed by conference affiliation to play in separate bowls, they must
play for the title.
But in this case, the best matchup is left out in the cold -- Miami
vs. Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl for all the marbles.
``It's no advantage to us if the coalition can't deliver,'' Texas A&M
Coach R.C. Slocum said. ``Then why be in it anyway?''
Making matters worse, a contest between Miami and Florida State would
be a rematch of a game already played this year. The Hurricanes beat
Florida State back on Oct. 10, winning 19-16 when Dan Mowrey missed a
last-second field goal for the Seminoles.
``I wouldn't see where it does us any good to play Florida State
again,'' Miami Coach Dennis Erickson said.
In fact, the Hurricanes have dominated the series for nearly a
decade, winning seven of the last eight meetings. In each of the last
two years, the Seminoles lost when a late field-goal attempt sailed wide
right.
Is it really necessary to stage the next edition of the Wide Right
Classic in the Fiesta Bowl, with an undefeated Texas A&M on the outside
looking in?
No matter what might happen in that game, the Aggies would have a
major beef if they won the Cotton Bowl to go 13-0.
``The best course of action is to win every game we play,'' Slocum
said. ``We do what we do and if that's not good enough, then so be it
for the polls. If the pollsters don't go to enough effort to research
the game -- see if they had the thing wrapped up and put younger guys in
-- we have no control over that.''
When there are only two undefeated teams left in the country,
shouldn't they play for the national title if at all possible? Not
according to the neon brigade's leaders.
``The system was not designed to be all-encompassing,'' said Mickey
Holmes, executive director of the Sugar Bowl. ``This is going in the
direction we wanted all along.''
Even the good folks at the Cotton Bowl weren't any help, even though
they stand to lose the prestige of hosting a national-title game.
``I just accept things the way they are,'' said Jim Brock, the bowl's
executive vice president. ``We agreed to this. FSU probably deserves to
be where they are. We're ready to accept what they dictate, despite all
my politicking.''
This situation has the potential to turn into the bowl coalition's
worst nightmare. In spite of all their best intentions, their rules
designed to create the best matchup are going blow up in their faces.
Not that any of them are about to admit it. Mention the scenario to
any of the coalition's leaders and they get a little testy.
Orange Bowl Executive Director Steve Hatchell said such criticism is
``looking at it the wrong way. We look at it as No. 1 vs. No. 2. If you
can get No. 1 vs. No. 2, you play the game.''
Even if the best matchup is No. 1 vs. No. 3.
``The whole idea was not to create a national-championship situation,
'' Holmes said. ``It wasn't the objective in the beginning, it's not the
objective now and it's not the objective in the future. It's not what
the bowls or the institutions want.''
But it's what the public wants. Despite all the double-talk by its
leaders, the whole idea behind the coalition was to stem the rising call
for a playoff system in the wake of a series of bad bowl matchups in
recent years.
That sentiment has eased for now. But all it takes is another
national-title controversy to get it started again.
So roll Tide, roll. The hopes -- and fears -- of the bowl coalition
roll with you.

The way we're scoring this is 2 for a win and 1 for a tie so they'd get
no points for missed bowls which can't possibly give anyone a_advantage.
If'n y'all leave it to me, I'd say fine. You can get credit for the bowls

How's about mighty Troy? I watched the Freedom Bowl and the Bulldawgs
was all over 'em in the 2nd half. The Trojans looked mighty
disinterested. Guess a few inflammatory statements by some So Cal
players towards Fresno didn't sit too well. Gotta love the Bulldawg
fans; 30K trekking down 330 miles from the San Joaquin Valley t
cheer 'em on. USC fans had the same interest as their players;
slim and none.
Jeez, Larry Smith looked cool and calm. Maybe he doesn't see the sword
of Damocles hanging over his haid. Noticed ol' SC superscatback Mike
Garrett prowling the sidelines. He was not amused. Lasted time he did
that, Ted Tollner got the one way bus ticket outta town. Cain Smith

drag the program down into the dumps. To think this used to be an annual top

terrible. It can't be that hard to recruit to a school like USC, with the
tradition, the sweaters, etc. Something's wrong and I'd say it's Smith.

70% of the time. So far this year, Nevada, Fresno State, and Utah have been

218.141 | about those picks | HBAHBA::HAAS | A Log of Effort | Mon Jan 04 1993 17:53 | 64 |
| Some of the picks highlights/lowlights:
o Worst spread not covered
Some real contenders here. The national championship of Did Not
Cover was Miami. The Canes gave 9 and lost by 21 for a whopping
29 points away from covering. Alabama gets the laurels for
National Bestest Spread Buster.
Other notables: Southern Cal, favored by 8, lost to Fresno St by
17; Penn St, favored by 1, lost to Stanford by 21.
o Best spread covered
Notre Dame gave 3 to Texas A&M and beat the Aggies 28-3, beating
the spread by 21.
Other notables: Hawaii, favored by 2, beat Illinois 27-7;
Florida who was a pick, beat NC State 27-10.
o Closest Cover
Syracuse gave 3 to Colorado and beat them 26-22. The difference
between losing and winning the pick were 2 missed PATs by the
Buffs. Not only did the difference of 4 have a profound effect
for the Nexted Bowl Contest, Colorado found itself late in the
game needing a TD when it coulda gone for a FG.
Honorable mentions: No Carolina who were favored by 1 and
beat Mississippi St by 4. The Heels intercepted Miss St inside
the 20 as they were marching very late in the game; Georgia who
gave 4 to Ohio St but won by 7. They were tied 14-14 when they
got the game winning TD.
o Covering Many
Only 2 teams that were favored by a TD or more covered. Florida
St gave 10 and beat Nebraska 27-14. Misssissippi favored by 9
beat Air Force 13 zip.
Washington St was the only other team that was favored by more
than 4 points that even won the game. The rest lost the game
outright: Southern Cal (8), Arizone (6), Miami (8).
o Spreads that really mattererd
There was one, and only one, game in which the spread mattered
and that was Washington St giving 8 beating Utah 31-28. In a
game not used for this contest, Nevada lost to Bowling Green
34-35 but were getting 7.
In all other bowls the game winner was the spread winner.
o Winning Conferences
Only 2 conferences had winning records. The SEC dominated, going
a nifty 5-1. Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia, and
Alabama won. The ACC finished 3-1 when No Carolina beat Mississippi
St, the only losing SEC team. Other ACC winners were Florida St
and Wake Forest who beat Oregon, while NC State lost.
The rest of the conferences had losing bowl records. Independent
Notre Dame won while bowl_orphan Penn St lost.
