And how the vines were just the right length so that they'd stop falling

since it's been open, people have jumped off it in various and sundry
ways. For a while, they were doing bungee jumping but they outlawed that.
For some reason they let anyone who wanted parachute off of it.
There was a pretty serious breeze blowing which caused a lot of people to
end up in the woods. The gorge there is pretty narrow anyway. At last
count, there were 9 injured, no one critically or fatally.

| | Last night, the local new carried a clip on bungee-jumping.
It seems that durring a jump, the cord separated. The station
had full TV coverage of the event. (Unfortunetly, I missed the
only time they showed the landing.) Since there was a saftey
air-bag installed under the jump platform, the victom only recieved
a broken ankle. Still, I wonder what his/her reaction was.
Ironically, the day before the local paper had a front page article
on the bungee jumping and locations. One of the topics was how safe
it was.

| | My wife and I passed through Hudson, NH, the other weekend.

They were having bungee jumping off a hot-air balloon.

My wife (a nurse) made the following comment:

"Don't these people know what that does to your
brain? The brain gets knocked around inside the
head, kind of like what happens when a person
    		 has a concussion."

Seems kinda stupid to me, too.

I also saw the bungee break on TV. I was relieved to know
that they had an airbag under the jumpers.

| | I always wondered that about the brain myself. The human brain is
protected by a liquid buffer, but I don't see much of a difference
between a bungee jumper's head jerk and that of a QB right before they
take him off the field with a concussion.
Of course, you've got just the opposite argument if you look at divers
and gymnasts. Their heads are a spinnin' and jerkin' every which way.

| | I'm not an expert, but I think there is a difference in severity between
a blow to the head (which causes the classic coup-contre-coup action in
a concussion) and the jarring which occurs in a bungee jump.
Can bungee jumping be any worse that pulling 6-9 Gs in a fighter plane?
However, I think it's an interesting question that probably could use
some study.
The human body is pretty tough when you come right down to it. Some things
don't always work so well (like we ought to have evolved a better knee joint!)
but for the most part, it can take what we dish out....

| | The guy should feel lucky, 'cause appearently he didn't see the 911
episode where the same thing happened to another guy, except he fell to
the parking lot without pads. Snapped his neck if I remember
correctly. He lived, but he wasn't the same upstairs (Veggie like).

This jumping looks like a rush, but I think I would rather go hang
gliding off a cliff 1st, or maybe parachuting.

was great, about the fire in Manhattan.
The guys from Rescue 1 carried out an incredible rope rescue, and the
men involved were cited by FDNY. I saw the story originally on Investigative
Reports.
Talk about a bunch of brave men.....
