150.0. "Bicycling: Race Across America" by SHALOT::MEDVID (could not hear or see for jealousy) Wed May 08 1991 11:21

    A friend and colleague here at Digital Charlotte, John Ellis, has been
    invited to compete in the Race Across America cycling event.  The race
    starts in Irvine, California and ends in Georgia.  The last winner did
    it in 8� days, riding 21� hours each day.
    
    John has not even competed in any of the qualifying races.  Last year,
    John rode 27,000 miles on his bike...morning, noon, and night this guy
    goes.  So he received a special invitation from the race committee. 
    (And we thought that utrarunners were crazy!)
    
    Now his only problem is money.  John is several thousand dollars short
    of being able to compete in the Race Across America.  I don't know what
    efforts he's taken for Digital or anyone else to sponsor him, but I
    thought somebody out there might have some suggestions to help him get
    a sponsor and/or the dough he needs.

    Psychiatric evaluation may already be covered under the benefits plan

    just read in "Vogue", Last years woman who won this race spent
    $17,000 to do it (9 person crew, support van,she ate every 2 hrs)
