Now the lowest (I don't know if there is a D-pool as well) has
finished. The four highest teams is qualified for the B-group next
year (they are redoing the system with 12 teams in the A-group (I
think)). Denmark are also entitled to qualify for the Olympics in
'92...

3. Romania 12
4. Bulgaria 9
5. Great Britain 9
6. Hungary 7

Quebec Nordiques dominated the first weekend of the Ice Hockey
World Championship. Joe Sakic scored three goals in Canada's
two victories against USA and Switzerland, and the Swede Mats
Sundin scored three goals in Sweden's draw against Finland.
After two rounds of the Round robin there are only two nations
that has not lost any points, The Soviet Union and Canada. But
on the other hand both have met Switzerland that everybody thinks
will finish last of the eight teams participating in the A-group.
Switzerland has shown that they have good defensive qualities by
allowing the Soviets and the Canadians only six goals in their
first two games. The question is if the Swiss got any offensive
qualities.
Neither Canada or Soviet has impressed so far (mostly because
their unability to score against Switzerland), and in the Canadian
team Sakic and Courtnall has scored six of Canada's seven goals
so far.
Sweden outclassed an uninspired Germany in the first round with
8-1 and staged a fantastic comeback against Finland. The Swedes
were behind with 2-4 when only one minute was left, when Mats
Sundin scored two goals within 15 seconds to tie the game. Exactly
the same thing happened in Moscow '86, the only difference is
that then it took 9 seconds.
Finland has been impressive so far, except for the last minute
against Sweden, and may take their first medal in the World
Championships ever. (They have a silver from the Olympics).
Another surprise has been the US team that has played better than
we are used to see Amrican teams. They have played a quick and
fair hockey and may surprise some teams in this tournament.
The biggest dissapointment so far is the Chzechs who has lost their
two first games. Maybe it's not that surprising since Chzechoslovacia
has lost 100 (!!) players to professional clubs all over the world
since 1989. Only a fraction of these players are here and the
Chzechs has had no time to prepare themselfes (which of course
is the normal situation for the Canadian and US teams).

Before the World Championships everybody asked whether Finland
or Czechoslovacia would join Sweden, Canada and the Soviet Union
into the playoff's. After three rounds of the Round Robin the
answer may very well be USA.
USA has impressed so far, and they were less than one minute from
beating Sweden when Mats Sundin for second straight game saved
Sweden by scoring the 4-4 goal. USA were the better team and has
impressed by playing "European style" hockey, really using the
whole rink. They also have a very good goalkeeper in John
Vandiesbrock from NY Rangers.
Canada beat Germany, but only with 3-2, and the Canadians has
only produced 10 goals in their three first games. They would
really need one or two offensive players more from the NHL.
The Soviets keeps winning without impressing, or maybe just
because they win without problems, should be impressive. The
Soviets will probably win the whole thing (as usual), they have
a very good defense and the best Soviet offensive that I have
seen since '87.
The Chzechs finally won a game when they beat Switzerland with
4-1, but it's very doubtful if they are going to make the playoff's.
The lack the speed and ingenuity that we have been used to see
from the Chzechoslovacian teams.

Suddenly the Soviets woke up and crushed the American team that
had played very well so far. The Soviets whipped the US team
with 12-2 after scoring 6 goals in the first period.
The Canadians won their fourth straight game and now only need
one more point to be qualified for the play-off's. Steve Larmer
scored twice when Canada beat Finland with 5-3. The question
is now if Finland will have their usual "syndrome", by starting
off well, but when loosing a few games, will not be able to stage
a comeback (So much for the Finnish sisu in hockey).
Sweden had great difficulty beating Switzerland but finally won
with 4-3. The Swedish offense and goalkeeping are good enough to
fight about the gold, but the big question is : Is the Swedish
defense good enough? Against Switzerland they made some mistakes
that would be fatal against a team like Canada or the Soviet Union.
The Germans shall be glad that no team will be degraded this year.
The Germans that finally has started to build for the future lost
big against the Czechs who won with 7-1. It would be surprising
if the Germans can avoid the eigth and last place.

The Soviet Union continues to win in the World Championships. On
Thursday they beat Canada with 5-3 in maybe the most exciting
game of the tournament so far. The Soviets started out as the
better team and seemed to get an easy victory leading with 3-1
after the first period. The Canadians wanted otherwise and fought
their way back into the game and when Tervor Linden equalized the
Soviet lead in the beginning of the third period it looked like
the Canadians could beat the Russians. But two mistakes by the
Canadian goalie Mike Vernon sealed the game for the Soviets who
are still undefeated after five rounds of the round-robin. They
are now qualified for the playoff's. Canada is also through unless
Canada looses both the remaining games and Chzechslovacia beats
both Canada and the Soviet Union (very unlikely).
Jari Kurri, the former Edmonton Oilers star, scored twice and lead
Finland to an easy 6-0 victory over Germany. It now looks very much
like the last game of the round-robin against USA will decide if
the Finns or the US will follow the Soviets, Canada and Sweden to
the play-off's.
Sweden's captain Thomas Rundqvist scored both of Sweden's goals
when they beat Chzechoslovacia with 2-1. The Swedes dominated the
first half of the game but could not score until the middle of
the second period. In the third period he scored his second goal
on a rebound after a breakthrough of another Swedish veteran,
former Calgary star, Hkan Loob.
USA beat Switzerland with 4-2 in the last game of the round. Joe
Sakic who dominated in the beginning of the tournament has not
been showing as much in the last games. Jeremy Roenick from
Chicago has "taken over" and lead the US team by scoring once
and assisting to one goal.

Ever since Finland was awarded the 1991 World Championships three
years ago, they have been preparing themselfes with only one goal
in mind ; a medal. The last two championships has only been a
transportation up to this one, where they in front of their home
crowd were supposed to take their first World Championship medal
ever.
But once again their dreams were shattered, this time by an US
player named Todd Krygier who in the middle of the last period
scored the winning goal and sent Finland out of the play-off's
and the US in for the first time since 1985. The Finnish team
could not handle the pressure and when Krygier scored the goal
was to be the winning goal, it was quite obvious that this was the
end of the Finnish hopes, even though they came very close to
equalizing only a minute later.
Sweden ended up undefeated in the round-robin after playing 5-5
against the defending champions from Soviet. This is the first
time since 1962 Sweden has been able to achieve this task, and
that time it lead to the gold medals. The Soviets started out
much better than the Swedish and in the second period they lead
with 3-0, they also had the lead with 4-2 and 5-4 before Thomas
Rundqvist scored the equalizer in the middle of the third period.
This was the first time ever that the Swedes has been able to
comeback from a 0-3 situation against the Soviets so this playoff
may be an exciting one. Pavel Bure scored one goal and had three
assists in this game.
Switzerland won their first game against Germany in a world
championship since 1965 when they won with 5-2 in the last game
of the round-robin. This put them a step further towards the goal
to not end last in this championships.
Chzechoslovacia surprised by beating Canada in the last round by
coming back from a 1-3 situation. Jiri Dolezal scored three goals
and assisted to the fourth. This put some honour back to the
Chzech team that has been the bad surprise of the tournament.

Sean Burke the Canadian goalie, saved Team Canada from defeat
against Sweden in the first round of the World Championship
Playoff's. It took the Swede's until the 39th minute of the game
until they were able to score, even though they were outplayed
by the Swedes most of the game. The result was 3-3, with Theo
Fleury as the best "outfielder" with one goal and two assists.
The Soviet Union got unexpected problems with the US team but
they finally won with 6-4. It seemed like the Soviets were on
their way against an easy victory after taking the lead with
4-0 after only 12 minutes. Remember that the Soviets won the
first game with 12-2. The US team had other plans and were as
close as 4-5 until Kozlov could seal the Soviet victory in the
end of the second period.

Sweden became new world champions on Saturday when they defeated
the Soviet Union in the final round of the playoff's with 2-1.
It was Mats Sundin that scored the winning goal for Sweden halfway
into the third period, with a goal that is destined to be a classic
in the annuals of hockey. He grab the puck deep down into the
Swedish defense zone, came alone against three Soviets, fooled
Fetisov halfway up the stands before scoring between the legs of
the Soviet goalie.
This was the fifth time that Sweden became the world champions and
the first time they went undefeated through the tournament when all
the best nations were competing. Sweden won 5 games and played 5
draws, and by this they were the only undefeated team in the
tournament. There are four players that should be pointed out as
the gold-getters in front of the others. First of course the goal-
keeper since noone is winning the World Championships without a
great goalkeeper, Rolf Ridderwall. Kjell Samuelsson, the Philadelphia
defense player that got a lot of criticism before the championship
for being slow and immobile. He turned out to be the best defense
player of the whole tournament, and proved why he is considered
a top man in NHL. Thomas Rundqvist the Swedish captain who is the
normally the best defense center in Sweden, but in this tournament
scored no less than 6 goals which equals the number of goals he
scored in the three previous championships, and finally MATS SUNDIN,
the Quebec player who scored so many vital goals for Sweden during
the Championships, and believe me, he is going to be a superstar.
It was actually close that the Championship ended with a big scandal.
Canada needed to beat USA with at least 5 goals to have a chance to
the gold. They also did this, but the scandal was the way they did
it. Canada was leading with 7-4 with less than a minute to go and
were one man short. When 30 seconds were left, Tim Taylor , the
American coach, ordered his goalie off the rink to add an additional
outfielder. With 15 seconds left Steve Larmer were able to score
8-4 in the empty goal, and with 1 second left Canada were able to
score again with a goal by James Macoun. Voila, Canada had what they
needed. The Soviet coach said when asked about why he didn't remove
his goalie in the end of the game ; "First of all I didn't think
that we would be able to score two goals against the Swedish team,
and secondly I don't think that what the US coach did belongs in
a hockey rink, so I kept him on place as a protest."
Canada scored the silver, but I personnaly thinks they were a little
better last year, when they also had a player like Steve Yzerman
which is one of my all-time favourites. Soviet Union were dissapointed
with their bronze, since only five Soviet teams has scored less
than a silver since 1954!. USA started out very good in the tournament
but were not able to keep it up in the final rounds, unfortunately
they will be remembered for what they did against Canada, not for
the good hockey they showed through the tournament.
On the whole the tournament this year was of a very high standard
and the play shown promises us a very exciting Canada Cup this
autumn. As all good reporters (as I hope I have been through this
tournament) I would like to nominate my All-star team :
Goalkeeper : Sean Burke, Canada. Brilliant goalie, I actually only
saw him make a single mistake through the whole
tournament.
Left Defense : James Macoun, Canada. A good offensive defense player
who scored many vital goals for the Canadians through
the tournament.
Right Defense : Kjell Samuelsson, Sweden. A giant in the rink, both
as a player and as a person (198 cm). Best defense
player, you could count the mistakes he did during
the tournament on your left hand.
Left Wing : Mats Sundin, THE STAR of the tournament. Brilliant
technique and no nerves. He always knows where the goal
is. A superstar in NHL in two or three years.
Center : Thomas Rundqvist, Sweden. An eleven year veteran, that
always has been good, but was great in this tournament
and he scored goals too! (see above).
Right Wing : Pavel Bure, Soviet Union. A technique that must have
been touched by God. Brilliant player, the NHL club
that gets him will be lucky.
Signing off is,
Paul Ahlgren
