DAMN!!!!!
Why do I feel like I'm in the Army, in a war, and all my friends are getting
blown away.
Why is this company getting rid of good people and leaving all the stagnant,
gluteus maximus covering managers who are only interested in building empires.
Enquiring and all that!

| This has been a BAD week. All the traditions seem to be going down the
s*itt*er (for you non-sensitive types, that's shitter).
Anyway, first it's those dweebs down at the Giants ticket office who
messed up our Manis.
Then, the dweebs here get rid of Mike JN without even lettin' him put
in a last JUNK note for posterity.
Nexted thing you know, they'll be snooping around the notes files.
Before you know it, we'll all be little Hare DECnas(tm), with a glassy
look in our eyes, muttering over and over "Time to make the company money,
Time to make the company money", or "No bottled water, no Wall Street Journal".
They'll have us in airport parking lots asking for nickels and dimes for
the company....
All the personality will be gone, all the joie de vivre, all of the cool
things that make (made?) this place cool....
Oh well...
So long Mike JN. You made me pee my pants and inhale my coffee more than
once. That's a talent that the folks who gave you the ax will never have,
nor appreciate!!!!!

Mike JN was one of the folks who got me hooked on this file in the

| Well, this ol' Downsizing thing is making a lot of people really pissed off.
There was a letter to the editor in the Courant this morning about the
closing of Enfield. Basically the letter stated that this company should
be getting rid of managers, not the flesh and blood backbone underneath.
Why do I have the feeling that this downsizing lottery, and all its
ramifications, is being handled with all of the skill and technique of a
botched up abortion?
I think this company has lost the ability to treat its employees like people,
and we've fallen prey to all the political pandering that I've seen in many
other companies...

I mean, it used to be they gave you a package and gave you time to look
around. Now I'm hearing all kinds of stories about personnel walking up
to folks, tapping them on the shoulder, and that's that...
If you ask me it's a pretty piss poor way to treat people. I realize we
gotta downsize and all that stuff, and we gotta be thinkin' about bidness
and all, but really, it's getting to be just like the government.
ie. if the rich make the tax laws, who do you think they're gonna tax.
They oughta go around and interview a bunch of us peons, so that they
can find out which managers are hangin' out, building empires, hiding in
their offices, and who are resisting all this wonderful change we've got
going here. THOSE are the folks who should be going.
I can see it now....in six months there'll be ONE employee left, with
5,000 managers to oversee him. And the managers will all be wondering
why we're not making money. So they'll work the guy harder and harder
until he finally drops.
geez, must be Friday if I'm gettin' on my high horse....

Boy, ya got that right. Mike was indeed one a the best. He
combined intelligence with a perverted sick sense of humor that
made me jealous. The guy seemed really bright and could really
right. I'd *steal* like to corner him in a bar and teach him a
thing or two about politics, but I have to admit that he turned
me around on "coach" Lou HitSome's ability to teach defense.
I don't feel badly for him, though. A guy like Johnston almost
certainly will end up much better for leaving the too-comfortable
womb that we Digitites are hooked on. Dunno what he did for DEC,
but I know several ex-Digitites, top flight guys, who left Digital
for one reason or another and have since improved their work scenes
while doubling their salaries.
Remmeber, while Mike probably just entered a positive growth phase
in his career, Al lost his life.
re: Frank's high horsery
You have a_attitude problem, buddy. These are Harvard MBAs running
this company, and they know how to plan and proceduralize in a way
that a_engineer like you probably couldn't even fathom. Just look
at the facks: We have management that manages more than any other
management cadre in the world - with the possible exception of IBM.
These people know how to design extremely elegant systems whereby
intense focus on delivery *process* allows us, as a company, to put
a dynamic interface between us and the market in such a way that we
are able to adapt with extremely flexible ever-changing metrics,
matrices, and mhods. These fine systems have enabled us to deliver
the most intensive mass managerial effort every deployed in industrial
history (World War II excepted).
Sure, we've missed markets, hired incompetent people by the thousands,
allowed Personnel to intercede on operational management prerogatives
for purposes of social programming, have developed an obscene cost
structure, and have lost control of line management's ability to
facilitate and implement changes made necessary by declining gross
profit margins in the computer industry (changes already implemented
by the rest of the industry)... but these are mere blips on a chart
that represents some of the most finely honed management schemes other
major industrials haven't even dreamed of, yet.
Straighten your attitude out, Frank. Before you cast the first stone,
take stock a yourself. Hail, I bet if I gave you one a them 12 page
memos from these MBAs you wouldn't even be able to *understand* what
the hail they were trying to say! 8^o

Seriously, I was rollin' when I read your essay there, and the problem
as I see it is first, they need a good helping on COMMON SENSE, a commodity
you will probably agree with me is in short supply in the country today.
Second, they've forgotten the engineers' Credo of Keep It Simple, Stupid.
The KISS principle, applied to this company, would go a long way.
Lastly, I agree whole heartedly about Mike probably doing much better outside

I'm sure it is. During the good times, when goldmining was profitable,
Cripple Creek's population was like 200,000. There was dozens of
saloons, parlor houses, etc. Now there's only a few hundred people
that actually live in the town. It IS a hot spot for tourists during
the summer tho'. With this small-time gambling ($5 limit) CC should
get another chance to survive. I hope it makes it. This is a really
fanstastic area--especially when you drive in from Divide on hwy 67.
The elevation is around 10,000' and as you top the mountain, before
the assent into CC you're treated with a 180 deg view of the Sangre
de Cristo and other snowy mtn ranges. It still knocks the air outa
me when I go that way. If you're in Colorado make sure you spend a
day in Cripple Creek.

You should have heard all the stir and moaning-whining going on over this
Casino. While the administration is getting on their high horse and
proclaiming just how bad it will be for society, in the background, you
could hear a large portion of the population of Connecticut sigh with
relief and say "I was getting really tired of driving to Atlantic City".
Hell, I'm sure Connecticut is just afraid they're gonna lose money on

else nearly ran into his hiney. The traffic had to be re-directed
a longer route for several months while the tunnel rafters were
virtually rebuilt.
This tunnel will barely allow a van or small truck thru. My kids
go this way during school field trips and have to squeeze the school
bus through. One gal bus driver skims the sides of the bus when
she drives through. She also has problems with curves and scares
the $h!t outa the kids when she runs of the road. They named her
"skids" for good reason.

| Hawk,
I don't want to open a big can of worms here, but the really sad part about
it is that if the Catholic Church were to open its coffers and dole out
some of their megafunds, they might be able to run affordable parochial
schools, instead of charging hard working folks like you an arm and a leg....
AS to bingo, you're right, it is a riot. I HATE bingo. For one reason
mainly, I have NEVER WON. Swear to the Almighty above, the few times
I've gone, I can sit there on the final cover card and wait for ONE
freaking number, while everyone else in the place needs like five.
I'll still be waitin' when 20 numbers later, some 400 pounds lady with
warts starts rockin' and shakin' like she's seein' the Holy Ghost, and
Whammo, she yells Bingo and then starts to cackle....
Oh, the only reason I went was because a buddy of mine from another fire
department invited me. Seems his department used to run bingo to raise
funds for equipment etc. (You wanna talk about haulin' in major $$$$ talk
Bingo......)

| What really cracks me up is that the church, the state etc. have no
problem with people playing bingo, even to excess, or spending the check on
lottery tickets, Megabucks, Mass Cash, Mass Millions, and on and on... But
if you like laying $20-$50 on a football game you're endangering the moral
fabric of society, shaking the very foundations of decency, corrupting the
future generations etc... I believe it's called hypocrisy.

| WELL, they don't mind if you play the lottery because they're making a bigger
cut than if you went to a Casino and saw the cut the house takes.
A while ago, Ct LOTTO sales were way down, because people were fed up with
the puny prizes, having more numbers in the pool etc.....
Hell, I'd rather play BlackJack at a casino. Those waitresses that bring
the drinks around are a helluva lot better looking that the old lady
with the mole on her chin with a hair coming out of it who runs the
LOTTO machine at the convenience store near me......

If the state could figure out a way to have folks lay $50 on a football

I've heard that Nevada tax on a slot machine is 90-some %. But, when
you figure the 100's of thousands that go into each machine, its still
big $$ for the casino.

I've seen this mentioned in many a place (so I'm not picking on you Chris) but
I still fail to see it. How can a lottery game be a tax? Is somebody forcing
poor people to play the lottery across the US? Does a lottery ticket cost $5
if you are poor and $1 if you make over 50k a year....Do you need a w-4 statement
in order to buy a ticket?
Maybe There's something here I don't get..........

Force has nothing to do with it. If you view it as a tax, it's
extremely regressive. It's income for whatever agency sponsors it.
Whether people are forced or not, it serves just as a tax.
But then, people began voting so-called Conservatives into office
who have made the federal tax system more and more regressive, setting
an example for every other agency who wants such an income. The same
holds true for cigarettes and beer.
Remember, these are the basic tenets of the original Reagan plan for
this country. It was BS then and it is BS now.

| On the other hand, I'd bet a humongous prized national lottery would
go a long way towards reducing the national debt. The trade off of
course is that the rich folks wouldn't be a ticket, but poor
Minnie Mouth-to-Feed, the local bag lady, would probably pick up a day's
cans and bottles just to buy a ticket.....

Yeah, like that nasty Tax Reform Act of 1986 that did away with all
those deductions and rolled back rates in a more simplified bracket
structure. Saved a guy like me living off one-and-a-half medium
incomes, with kids and limited deductions, a few dollars. Seemed
progressive to me, and one of the few decent and fair things Reagan
accomplished.

You don't have to convince me that Poor people buy more lottery tickets than
rich people. I still don't see how it is tax. I think of a tax as something
that inflates the price of a good or service so that when I buy it a percantage
goes to the govt. Either that or it's a percentage of my salary that goes to
the govt.
I don't think a lottery ticket fits either of those models.
There's free choice associated with buying a lottery ticket and everybody knows
the govt is the one running it and reaping the benefits.
