I have this 12" Schooner that I take into the bathtub with me. It's really
cool. Usually, I just let it float, but every once in a while I'll turn
on the showerhead and pretend that a typhoon has blown up, and make all the
little men on board go overboard and drown.....
Sure does beat a rubber duck or f*rting in the tub!

| Christophe Auguin of France, has built up enough of a margin to win the
27,000 mile BOC Challenge. Auguin had trailed fellow Frenchman Alan
Gautier until the final leg of the around-the-world sailing race.
Auguin's boat, Group Sceta, was 217 miles ahead of Gautier's Generali
as of noon on Sunday. Auguin could finish in 120 days, which would
smash the previous record of 135 days.
The race started Sept. 15, 1990 in Newport, RI.
I had the pleasure to see AUguin and most of the other racers finish
their leg in Sydney Harbor last December. Truley remarkable boats and
sailers.
One remarkable story was one of the female sailers had her main mast
ripped down in a storm, yet she still manged to get her boat back to
Sydney and hang onto 9th place at the time. I saw her mast sitting on
the doc next to her boat - the metal was totally twisted and ripped
apart.

Nope. But they have to be careful of jellyfish (see above, without the "a")
and the GREAT WHALES (who have no heads).
Ay, matey, the Bounding Bathtub can be a very dangerous place......

| Actually, for the America's Cup, they've got a new class of boat.
Either they redefined the 12 meter specifications or came up with a whole
new class, I'm not sure which, but the boats are bigger, and believe it or
not much closer to the huge boats that used to participate when the
races first started.....
Should be interesting. I hope they don't run into any typhoons, jellyfish,
or headless whales 8^)

I'm telling ya, the guys Nancy and I saw in Sydney were far from
Yuppies. Talked to one of the US guys for a little bit. Guy looked
like a marijuana farmer. He was cleaning his tools off - they were all
rusted to heck. Sailing around the world ain't very easy. They got
caught in a typhoon at one point. Pretty scarey stuff. And these were
solo endeavors.

| Sailing around the world by yourself is tough.
I mean, first off, you wouldn't have SPORTS notes. Personally, I'd make
it as far as the Race off Long Island and that'd be that. I'd have to
turn the boat around.
Then, you'd have no one to talk too. I mean, I'd probably be starting up
conversations with squids and stuff... I mean, just imagine a Bill Murray
type guy going "Hey Mr Squid...Nice of you to be here tonight...On the
World Sailing ship, yeah, yeah..."
And then sex. I mean, if you alone, the only sex you're gonna get is
Mr Hand, right? Right. I mean, it's a noble venture to go around the world
looking for a woman (and hey, with luck, you'd catch up to a Meg Ryan clone
floating on four steamer trunks), but let's face it, around the world
alone is a LONG time to go without nookie....
Finally, what if like, you ran outta toilet paper? I mean, you just
can't jump into the lifeboat and find the nearest 7-11, ya know....
Nope, it's a darned tough undertaking....
I'll stick to sailing my boat in the bathtub.....

make out after the long hiatus. I'm just happy that the litigious
Kiwi is out, and that the farce with the big cat won't be repeated.
The Kookaburra vs. America series in '87 was truly great. I hope
for a repeat of that quality of racing.

| I'm looking forward to the America's Cup. The boats are all new
designs with about 1/2 the weight of the 12 meters and 40% more
sail area ..... crew size has increased to , I think, 16.
Last Spring I was hanging out in Portsmouth R.I. one Saturday when
I noticed this HUGE mast down at the end of a dock. Turns out to
be Matador 2 ..... owned by Bill Koch from Dedham, MA. ..... this
maxi-racer was a prototype for the Cup boats. What a unit !! Mast
of @ 140 feet .... bright red hull ..... during this past maxi racing
season Matador 2 cleaned up on the world circuit.
The Cup course has been altered to provide several more downwind runs;
also each boat will have onboard cameras. They're anticipating a large
viewership after the Freemantle experience. Should be quite
interesting.

I always did enjoy the Three Rivers Regatta while in Pittsburgh. The
Monongahela is Seneca Indian for "River that has banks always falling
in." Shortened to 'mon' gives it new meaning if'n you know your Latin
for certain parts of the anatomy. But such talk of 'venery' will not
be tolerated in this topic. Please stick to boating...I know I will.

The only thing that bothered me about this Cup was that, with the exception
of Race 5, the seas were so calm. It would have been much more exciting
had they had the choppy seas so prevalent off Western Australia.
My great-great-great-grandfather was a sea captain, and this sailing stuff

| Well, if San Diego expected tons of spectators, they need to get a
little real.
Yachting is not baseball or football or basketball or things like that.
It's not a sport that attracts tons o' spectators. For one thing, it's
an ocean sport, and there's a hell of a lot of the USA that ain't near
the ocean. Two, it's a very exclusive sports. Like someone said, if
you have to ask how much it costs to own a boat like that, you can't
afford it. And lots of people who like the water don't even own a
paddle boat, much less'n a sailin' one. Three, it's not something you
can watch with your six pack in the cooler on the beach. At least not
with much clarity. :) ("See that spot son? I think that's sail
boat. Oops, it's a seagul. Oh well.")
It's much more fun to watch on ESPN with all the neat computer grafix
and cameras n stuff. As much as I like San Diego, I wouldn't go there
simply to watch a sailboat race. So if'n the mayor expected lots of
folks too, no wonder the city took a bath. Sheesh.
