Look for the Haafa Herrings to goon it up big time since they already
know they're overmatched in hockey skills. Lotta high sticks and
goalie-running. Probably a little arson and a rash of stabbings if
they can get away with it.

| I don't think it'll goon up. I look at the last Hartford-Boston
game. Granted the game on Sunday will tell more, but Hartford
doesn't have the team cohesion now to goon it up.
Holik does have to take some boxing lessons in the off season.
People pick on him and he doesn't know how to fight, and we
can't keep affording a 3rd man in to help him out...

It IS interesting that the regular season ends with these two teams
playing a meaningless game, only to face a potential 7 more.
I wish they'd allow Sunday's game to count as the first playoff game.
But since it doesn't count, I think both teams will be doing a lot of
offensive/defensive matchup switching to get a feel for what works and
doesn't work. If Da Broons have their way, the series should be a
typical grind-it-out close checking game with scores in the 3-1 range
or so.

| Dickstah,
First off, GREAT p-name!
Actually, on paper, the Broons-Whale match up well, because they
both play (should play in the Whale's case) a grinding checking
game.
All of this season, the Whalers have not had an identity. ARe we
a grinding team? Are we a finesse team? They'd go out one night
and win on hard forechecking and grinding play, then lose the next
because they wanted to be a finesse team.
(I think Rick Ley has had an adverse effect on the team, but that's
beside the point)....
If they'd get a little consistent, then maybe..... Nah!
Bruins Sweep. No doubt about it.

| Actually (TANGENT alert, TANGENT alert) the quality of many
individual's written communication has drastically dropped
in the five years I've been here. It's the same outside the
company.
Written communication is highly important. I've known prospective
employers who would toss out a resume for spelling errors.
While grammar is a bit tough to police if you don't know the
rules, there's no excuse for poor spelling. At the very least
you can bind DECspell to a key on your terminal and have
it invoked via your editor. DECspell will pick up a lot
of errors.
It's unfortunate, but in this day and age a lot of people will
judge you by the written word you produce, and if that written
word is the first thing they see, it's a first impression, and
we all know that first impressions are the strongest.....
Now bak 2 da brooons! 8^)

I don't see Hartford beating Boston, but I don't see a sweep either.
The Broons' defense has been porous over the last 3 weeks and with
Galley hurting, this could be worse. Any team that can shut down the
Janney-Neeley-* line, could quite handily beat Boston.
Although Christian and Hodge have provided the additional punch,
Carpenter being out and Poulin being day-to-day raises the question of
scoring depth.
Boston will beat Hartford and the winner of Montreal/Buffalo, but will
not get out of the conference this year.

Well, the situation was this. The playoff tix order forms went
out just before or after the big trade. There were many fans who
were sour on the team.
Richard Gordon sent out a letter asking the fans to suppor the team.
It didn't have anything to say about Bruins fans scarfing up the
tix. It was more of an economic reason.
From a financial point the Whalers will actually make out better because
the series is against Boston. If it had been Montreal, the Whalers
were seriously looking at a half empty arena for home games.
(It seems the fans have made a statement to the ownership/management
of the team).
With Boston, at least the seats will be filled.
Many season ticket holders have refused to buy seats for many reasons.
While not strictly a playoff issue, one fan I know, when he got his
order form for the next season, inquired about paying more money and
moving closer to the ice, and he mentioned a section number where
he wanted to sit, and knew there were some openings. He was told
"Oh no, those areas are reserved for VIPs".... He sent his form back
with instructions written on it on how the Whalers Management should
orient his season tickets before inserting them into their .......
Personally, I hope the Bruins sweep. If that doesn't get rid of
Rick Ley I don't know what will.......

I thought it did too. But I wasn't sure when the playoff order forms

I know that many season ticket holders are just plain pissed off.

be down, we took all the really HOT women and hid them. What you saw
was our leftovers ;^) ;^)
Seriously, I'm happy that so many Bruins fans came down. It made (I think)
a loud and clear statement to Whalers management about just how the
fans think the Flounders rank.
BTW, what I saw in the game last night, shows me that this team has
talent, but is not motivated properly and is poorly coached. There
is no precision, and a marked tendency to break down when things get
tough. That all stems from coaching, I believe.

| I didn't see the first period. I was driving home and heard it on
the radio.
I was talking about the Whalers vs the Bruins in general. I noticed
in Game 2 and Game 3 a general lack of precision on the Whalers parts.
When the Bruins are tight on them they get flustered.
Last night, in the third, when the Bruins were busting hump, the
Whalers ALMOST folded. They have to come out of their end with
confidence and poise. They haven't learned that yet.
I don't know if it will go 6 or 7 now, but the Bruins will take it.

Boy did the B's luck out lasted night. Moog won the game for them.
Hartford was killing the B's in the first period, gawd it was horrible.
The horror..the blood pressure! The B's looked like they were wearing
lead skates and had a Whaler riding piggy back. But alas they trade
fluke goals and it's "OPEN THE FLOOD GATES!" What a turn around. A complete
180. Sievedorkawitz didn't know what hit him. All of the sudden the Bruins

After watching the first two periods, I had two questions:
1. Where were the Whalers during the regular season?
2. Where did the Bruins go during the playoffs?
Funny game, this here hockey. One fluke goal and the game changes.
The Broons couldn't do a thing early in the game, including getting
some shots on net with the power play. Boos started to rain down as
their performance was, well, urine at the poverty level.
On the Whale goal, I thought that if anybody on the ice hit the puck
with the stick above the shoulder, the play was dead. Certainly looked
like Sweeney(?) tried to swat it out of the air, and it ended up
deflecting off his stick into goal.

| Sorry folks, was out sick on Friday....
And NO, it wasn't because of the game Thursday night. I was legitamately
sick.....
My reactions to the Series.
If you look at the overall results of the series, it was as
bad as last year -- another first round defeat.
However, the Whalers are about a step away from being a serious
contender. There were many single periods where the Whalers outplayed
the Bruins handily. They hit harder, they played better. Moog
was what kept that Bruins in it -- that and the fact that winning
is an art. If winning is an Art, then the Bruins are Michaelangelo
and the Whalers are still working with Crayolas....
The Whalers have finally got that Paul Coffeyish Offensive Defensemen
in Zalapski, and have the playmaker they need in Cullen. What they
need now is a mean Defenseman (kind of like Manson) and a center
who's good at O and D to back up Cullen (ironic that they should now
need a Ron Francis type of center 8^))
Most of all, the Whalers need a GREAT goaltender. The DORK is not
it, and while Reaugh would be an adequate backup, he's not first
line caliber. For my money, I'd make a trade with Edmonton, to
get either Fuhr or Ranford, hopefully getting rid of Dineen in
the process....
Whalers still need to learn to play away from the puck, and need
work on their poise.
They are on a great brink right now. This could be the start of
this team building itself into a contender, or it could be yet
another in a long line of disappointments. The scary part is that
six years ago, after taking Montreal to OT of the 7th game of the
Adams Division final, they were at the same brink, and fell on the
side of perpetual mediocrity.....
Finally, it pains me greatly that the Whalers played just well enough
for them to retain Rick Ley as coach, I fear.....

I too thought that it was a good series, 'tho a bit of a nail-biter for
we Broons fans. I really felt that if the B's lost game 6, they would
have lost the series.
This Hartford team is the best I've seen in a long while. The addition
of Cullen, Zalapski, Houda and the play of the rookies Yake, Sanderson,
and McKenzie have added so much depth that the Whale (I can't believe
I'm actually saying this - and it's in writing, no less!) could be a
serious threat in the Patrick. They do need goaltending in a HUGE way,
although as I've said a hundred times in the past, I like Kay "Mom, why
do I have a girl's name" Whitmore and think that the organization is
not giving him what he needs to play at an NHL level. Sid isn't
consistent enough, and I haven't seen too much of Reaugh to be able to
comment.
I hope they can Rick Ley, who's coaching was the worst thing to happen to
the Whalers (IMO). I do feel badly for the Whalers, but I'm glad that
they're the ones out on the greens, and not the Bruins.

| Again, the Whalers are on the brink. Not only with their team, but with
the fans as well.
I sincerely hope ticket prices don't go up again, because they'll lose
even more fans if they do.
Rick Ley is a inane coach. He has shown ability in Milwaukee, but it's
on thing to coach in a minor league, where players are bustin' hump to
make the bigs, and willing to eat dog shit if the coach says so, and
another thing to take a bunch of different high paid athletes and
motivate them to act as a unit...
Ley can't do that. But, mark my words, he'll be back next year (sigh)....

ME TOO! About three weeks now. The reason? I thought I had a heart
attack! I was skiing. After about three or four hours, I stopped and
went in to get a Pepsi (I got the right one Baby, uhuh!). Started
getting these tremendous chest pains, and getting dizzy. Scared the
shit out of me. Back home, I took all kinds of tests. They said I'm
extra healthy. So then I did a treadmill. I told the Doc I was an
inactive old fart. On the treadmill, he said any heartrate over 150 was
good. I was up to 195 when I quit, and could have gone some more (but I
was definitely feeling it by this time... he had already increased the
speed and raised the slope eight times, and I was really motoring.) The
chart he had, said that 195 rate was a 25 year old with an extrememly
active lifestyle.
So. What the hell caused the chest pains?
Nobody knows. However, I figured it might have been a secret message
from Odin, so I decided to quit smoking.
I've noticed I tend to be quite a bit testier lately, and it feels like
this huge empty place inside me is screaming SMOKE you @ssh*le! But

a Foley has an inflatable bulb on the end, which is inflated after it's
inserted to hold it in place.
Well, at one point later on during the procedure, the patient became

| Because Ron Francis is a very classy guy, who gave a lot more to
Hartford than just his ability on the ice. He worked tirelessly
in the community, and people here miss him because of that as well.
He was treated like SHIT by the Whalers organization, and that,
more than the trade is what has people pissed off.
Unlike most prima donas who complain about cheap shots, Francis
goes out there night after night, gives 100%, and does his best.
He's no Gretzky or Lemieux, but he's got talent, and tries to maximize
it every play. He's done well since going to Pittsburgh.
As to whether he could lead Hartford to the Cup, look at what he's
had to play with, look at the history of Hartford's #1 picks over
the last ten years, and tell me that anyone short of Gretzky or
Lemieux could have led the Whalers to the Cup.
In fact, I will predict here that you won't see a Cup in Hartford
in the next 5-10 years......

| 'Saw,
You're making a case for players such as Ratelle,Park,
Red Berenson et all who "deserved" a shot at the Cup because
they had some of the same qualities as Francis. As you know,
being on a Cup winner sometimes is being in the right place at
the right time as well as having the talent. I don't begrudge
Francis having a shot at the Cup. He is finally contributing in
a manner (second or third line center) that is commensurate with his
talent level. He ain't feeling the leadership crunch that he lived
with ( and dealt with not-too-well in the playoffs) at Hartford.
As far as he "deserves" a shot at the Cup, Nah, not any more than
half the guys in the NHL. His presence ( yes and Meatball's too)
have made Pittsburgh a better team and may bring a Cup to that town.
Just as Zalapski,Cullen, and Brown will make Hartford a better team.
If the Whalers can get a decent goalie, they'll compete in the Adams
for the top twp spots. All without Francis.

| Nope.
I was making a case for Ron Francis from someone who watched him for many
years, enjoyed watching him grow as a hockey player, who saw him provide
leadership in MANY different ways besides on the ice (A captain's playing
field duties are about 5% of the job), and as someone who likes him
immensely.
It's obvious he was never going to get a shot at the Cup in Hartford,
so it's nice to see him in a role where he can do it. He's not as
untalented as you'd like to make him out to be. He's not a LeMieux or
Gretzky, but he has a defensive side a lot of people overlook. He's
been consistently aroundt the 100 point mark the last couple of years,
which is nothing to sneeze at.
I'm just glad he's getting a shot...

| Wow, that's a tough question.
I think sometimes what happens is that a team can get hot and peak at
the right time. That's one part of what happened....
Here's my theory:
In the Campbell conference, there were some tough divisional races at the
top. In the Norris, it was St Louis and Chicago battling for first place.
In the Smythe, Edmonton, LA and Calgary all were beating the piss out
of each other.
Now the playoffs start. Everyone had counted Minny out of it early on.
That in itself is a BIG motivational factor. Tell a team that no one
thinks they'll do very well, and it can make monsters out of them.
While Chicago might have been a tad too cocky, I think they and St Louis
were "off" from all the battling during the last part of the season.
Edmonton had a tough fight to win their playoffs (I think) and we no
match for the Minny Momentum.
(Kind of like UCONN in their Dream Season in Basketball -- everyone picked
them to finish last, but they won the Big East and performed well in the
tourney, that's what I think happened to Minnesota).
Hope this helped. I might be right, but I could be wrong as well 8^)

| Minny had a lot of veteran players who came back from injury at the
end of the season/beginning of postseason.
I think that Minny was sitting and waiting for the playoffs to begin.
What with all the hoopla going on with St. Louis and Chicago duking it
out for first in the Norris/League, Minny was completely overlooked.
Also, don't forget that last year Minnesota managed to take the
Blackhawks to seven games.
St. Louis had to battle back from a 3-1 deficit with Detroit. (To
which Game 7 came down to the L-A-S-T minute).
I think that the Oilers (another team coming back from a 3-1 deficit)
had tough series against the Flames and Kings; with all kinds of
overtimes. Not to mention that Messier was hurting, Sandstrom suffered
a broken leg, etc.
The Stars have the momentum....I'm hoping for them to win the Cup
and finally have Brian Propp be part of it.
This series could be decided on the powerplay....Minnesota is
absolutely hot and the Penguins have looked pretty good on the
pp themselves.

Depends upon the city.....Chicago season ticket holders got them MAILED

ballots this year.
At the GaHden you can pick them up at the ballot box and either put

a .29 stamp and mail it. The same goes for the Hartford Civic Center.
