Anybody hear "old friend" Jimmy Breslin on ESPN yesterday morning
angrily ranting and raving about how a great writer in Axthelm had
wasted his life on television, football with its 12 minutes-of-action-
per-game, and cheap Manhattans? I think Dick Schaap was mortified and
finally blurted out, "Well, you will miss him, right, Jimmy?", to which
the response was, "Yeah, that's why I'm so angry." Hell of a eulogy,
and something you don't see on TV too often...

It is with the greatest sadness that I have to tell you that our colleague
Mike Kavanagh was killed in yesterday's plane crash in Colorado Springs.
Mike was well known in the New England area as he worked here as a test
engineer on Galway's behalf in Salem (NIO) and Marlboro (MRO) plants. He
had regular contact with test engineers in ACO and BTO also.
Mike was from Dublin and joined Digital in January 1985. He recently
relocated back to Galway with his wife Una and their 2 children Linda
and Niamh. He was visiting Colorado on DEC business.
His colleagues and friends here are deeply shocked by his death. We have
organized a service in his memory. The details are in the attached note.
Please help me to notify all that knew him and worked with him so that they
may have the opportunity to attend.
Regards,
Paul

| I received the following eulogy from one of my workmates here in
European Support. Philip O'Keeffe, an Irish DEC employee, currently
working in Northboro, wrote the following. Philip is one of the more
outspoken members of the "Wild Geese", and has a talent for putting pen
to paper.
The other tragedy Philip speaks of, is the sudden death of Mike and
Unas child this January past.

The Rare Ould Times.
===================
For Kav: To Una, Niamh and Linda.
We have lost a dear, dear friend. Since news of his tragic death, we
his friends from the Wild Geese soccer team have struggled to accept.
God often appears to deliver injustice upon the good for reasons only
He understands, redoubling losses and agonies upon the innocent for
inexplicable reasons. The Kav as we called him, The Kav with his
infectious Dublin humour, his Northside/Southside jokes, and others,
so many others that would have your sides sore from laughing.
The Kav, the dedicated professional who was a guardian and foster
parent to new people in his work for the company, and a recognised
achiever in his field. The Kav with his love and talent for music. I
will always remember him for the night of his going away party last year
from the U.S. In the small hours he brought out his guitar and started on
his Dublin songs, songs sung and played from the heart, "ring a ring a
rosie'........"I remember Dublin City in the Rare Ould Times". Our
rare ould times with Mike were far too rare.
Among our group of emigrants there are those who knew Mike very
closely, and those who knew him less well. All of us remember him with
nothing but overwhelming fondness and exceptional warmth. All of us
are deeply at a loss. This sense of loss and sorrow, despite its
intensity, cannot even compare with that which Una, Niamh and Linda
must be feeling. Most of us never met you, his cherished family. We
knew of your other recent heartache. Our hearts and tears are with you
in this terrible time. Believe me, we have all shed those tears in the
past few days. I hope our shared grief helps in some small way as you
grieve. Our words are too weak to express our sorrow for you and the
loss of our dearest departed friend.
God Bless you Kav, Una, Niamh and Linda.
From all of your friends in the Wild Geese.

It is my terribly sad duty to inform you of the sudden and tragic
death of a friend and former workmate, Al Cote. Al died at home
over the weekend of a perforated ulcer. It is truely shattering news.
Al, just a young man with a full life ahead of him, was a very responsible

I'm sure you all have memories of Al, and it might be a nice gesture to
take a few moments and reflect on the time Al was a member of ESG.

96.29 | Another lefthander in heaven's starting lineup | SHALOT::HUNT | RIP, Chris Short | Mon Aug 05 1991 16:10 | 28 |
| And, as the p-name says, former Phillies' left hander Chris Short
died late last week. Short was the Phillies' ace lefty in the
1960's and along with righty Jim Bunning formed a strong front half
of an otherwise weak starting rotation.
In 1964, the Phils rode the arms of Bunning and Short to a 6 game
lead with a little over 10 games left to play. They lost a few in a
row and then manager Gene Mauch went with a two man rotation of just
Bunning and Short each pitching on a day or two of rest. The Phils
ended up losing 10 straight and finished in 3rd place behind St.
Louis and Cincinnati. It was one of the worst collapses of all
time and the Phils were ruined for the rest of the decade and then
some.
1964 was the year I saw my first baseball game. Phillies against
the Houston Colt .45's in Connie Mack Stadium in August. Johnny
Callison hit a home run and Phils' rookie 3rd baseman Richie Allen
also had a big night. And Chris Short was the winning pitcher.
Short suffered an aneurysm in a blood vessel in his brain three years
ago and was in a coma in a nursing home in Delaware ever since. The
Phillies and the local community had been running some charity
benefits for him because he had exhausted his medical insurance
shortly after his stroke.
Short was 53. And, all of a sudden, I feel a *lot* older.

the most over-hyped and over-exposed dogs that have *ever* lived.
It was pretty tiresome to try and watch a ballgame involving the Reds
and have to put up with Marge's thing with the big St. Bernard. And
I think Eric Davis is right ... the dog did get treated better.
I used to feel the same way about "Millie", the Designated Wimp's
White House dog, but I changed my mind after it became known that the
former Queen Bitch, Nancy Reagan, was mega-pissed that Millie's book
was ranked higher on the booksellers' lists than her own ridiculous

I am very sorry to have to announce that Hoot's brother passed

Dan Gibson was a temporary employee with DEC for approx 1 yr
and did participate in ::SPORTS on and off during that time. Dan
contracted a viris a few years ago which attacked his heart muscle
and reduced it's function to less than half of normal. Dan managed

-< More on Connors.... >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A good article in the local rag (Burlington Free Pree) this
morning talked about the backboard breaking incident. A short
section from the article (reprinted without permission):
It was Nov 5, 1946. Fans arrived at the Celtics' home
opener straight from the polling booth, where they had
just elected John F Kennedy to Congress for the first
time.
The game at the Boston Arena against the Chicago Stags
was set for 8:30 that evening, and 4,329 fans had paid
up to $2.75 a ticket to see the first game of the new
National Basketball Association in Boston.
But the game was delayed for more than an hour when
Connors, a 6-foot-7 player from Seton Hall, took a shot
that bounced off the front of the rim.
"During the warmups, I took a set shot, a harmless 15 to
20 foot set shot, and CRASH, the glass backboard shatter-
ed," Connors recalled in a 1986 interview with George
Sullivan, who wrote "The Picture History of the Boston
Celtics."
It was the first year for glass backboards. A worker had
forgotten to install a piece of rubber that was supposed
to go between the rim and the glass.
Other facts from the article:
Connors was the starting center for the first Boston Celtics
team.
Connors averaged 4.6 points a game in the 1946-47 season. He
was dropped by the Celtics after 4 games of the next season.

He was 69 years-old, and had been in poor health for some time. He
suffered a heart attack early Sunday, and died in the afternoon.
I fondly remember some of his more memorable lines, such as "Havlicek

He was, without a doubt, a Celtic fan, and I doubt that any announcer
was more closely identified with the team he covered.

| Hey, I used to work with JimBob Dallas/Denver/Chicago/Washington almost
If he's still around I'll have to ask how Sue Ellen's doing. Also,
if he's gone back to any of the bowling alley's where the "bad element"
hangs out.
Didn't he say he drove a caddy with a big hood ornament?

| another great story about Bob... Along long long time ago in a land
far far away Crews send HOOT an autographed (signed Bob Crews)Picture
of Johnny Most claiming it as himself. HOOT not knowing Johnny Most
from Madonna by face hangs it on his office wall believing in good
faith that it is Crews. Well it hangs ther for about a month before
Hervy Church (A Least Coaster) comes by and says to HOOT, WTF are you
doing with a picture of Johnny Most in your office (HOOT hate the Celts
and lets everyone know... Hervy was a fan) HOOT was blown away !
Thats how the Johnny Most part of the nick name came about.

athlete.

| The Diz was 75 and died of pancreatic cancer....
Gonna miss him. I remember when I was a kid taking trumpet lessons, the
teachers always said "Don't puff out your cheeks, you can't play that
way", and then we discovered Dizzy Gillespie......
Dizzy and Miles Davis were always favorites, and in my mind, occupy
places of prominence in the Pantheon. Both are gone now....8^(

About 10 years ago I told myself that I'd have to see as many
of the legends of jazz and blues as possible before they passed
on. One of those legends was Dizzie Gillespie and I got to see
him at Jonathan Swift's about eight years ago. He was an old cat
and he didn't have the fire that he'd once had, but when he launched
into "Salt Peanuts" for a little while he was transformed. I'm
glad I got to see him.

| I never got to see him in person, unfortunately.
I did get a chance to see Buddy Rich, and a couple of years later actually
road a shuttle with him and several band members (just me and them) out
to a DC-10 at the Munich airport. Very nice guy.

| Gillespie lived around the Columbia U. area. There is a local bar there
that used to be called the West End and is now he West End Gate - owned by
the sme guy who owns the Village Gate. The West End has a room where they
always had Jazz bands. Every so often Gillespie would either be scheduled
there or would just show up.
