94.1 | And they're killing each other for this stuff! | SHALOT::MEDVID | When two tribes go to war... | Mon Feb 04 1991 09:46 | 27 |
| I was reading one of my friend's fashion magazines over the weekend. I
saw some interesting statistics on kids who wear (and kill for) sports
apparel. Here are some of the stats (approx.) that I remember:
- Of the random kids surveyed wearing L.A. Kings jersey's and/or
caps, only 15% of them could name one player on that team. Of
course, that player was Gretzky.
- Only 5% of the kids wearing L.A. Kings clothing could answer
at least one of the following questions correctly:
o Who did the Kings play last and who won?
o In what arena do the Kings play?
o What division do the Kings play in?
o How many players are on the ice at the
start of a hockey game?
There were a couple more but I can't remember them.
- Only 35% of kids wearing L.A. Raider clothes could name a
starting player on the defense.
- One individual who was totally decked out (head to foot) in
Georgetown clothing could not name a player on the team or
any player who had ever played for Georgetown. He said he
just liked the colors.

GOT to luv the Bengals' outfit! Whoever designed the Nuggets' unies
should be taken out and shot. I've always luved the Gougetown Horrors'

Anybody noticed all the people wearing UNLV colors of late? Why not,

| I don't think Pitt's football uniforms are that bad...well, except when
they wear the gold pants and white shirts...OK, I agree. But when they
wear the blue shirts, I think they're kind of nice.
What I really hate is what Pitt did last year with their basketball
uniforms. Like the Lakers and ND, they wore gold both home and away.
White should be the mandatory home color. Gold is too dark a shade to
be considered "home white."

| I like the Hornets colors (teal and purple). It's the designe that is
kind of bothersome. And what's gonna happen when teal meets the demise
like some other crayola colors? Anyone ever notice the black hornet
emblem on the waistband, however? Now that would be tough if it were
on the shirt. Instead, we've got a muppet mascot.
Alexander Julian designed those uniforms. There was an interesting
article in this weekend's paper. Our AA Cubs team in Charlotte, the
Knights, last year wore Julian-designed uniforms. They were all black,
had thirteen different colored pinstripes, blue numbers and names you
couldn't see unless you were in the front row, and, get this, matched
the color scheme of the stadium.
Ol' Alexander is all POed now because the Cubs have ordered the Knights
to change to a more mainstream uniform...that which matches a Cubs
design. A Sports Illustrated writer remarked of the old uniforms:
"It's obvious Alexander Julian never threw a baseball in his life."
Julian's response to this is: "I've been monitoring what this man
wears. It's like an illiterate criticizing Hemingway."
Ewwwwwwww!

| Alexander Julian?! :^) 'Nuff said on *him*.
Dan'l you're right, it was in the whites that I saw them this year
and it looked bad. They do look better in the blues. Did I ever
tell ya I saw Tony Dorsett & Co. in that classic matchup in Notre
Dame Stadium? What a game. Freezing drizzle throughout, and Tony
ran for well over 300 yards. The lead went back and forth, with
Pitt losing the game as a last second FG attempt hit the cross bar,
bounced up, and then dropped harmlessly short a foot or two under
the watchful eyes of, you guessed it, Touchdown Jesus (they were at
that end of the Stadium, the north end as I remember).
Best college grid game I ever saw in person. Nobody tailgates like
the Irish alumni do. Never saw so many RVs (or drunks) in my life.

It looks like it's the same gold background color but it's a new logo with
white numbers and letters and red trim. It was the word "49ers". The

Somebody ought to whisper the words "New Coke" into their marketeers' ears

New York's "ny" was much better than the "GIANTS". Jets' old symbol was

I agree with the Bengals. Great. BTW, they had that design on tap for
years. (No joke !) Paul Brown was quoted as saying that he preferred
teh conservative look for an expansion team because he didn't want them

I'm not 100% sure.
I know there was a lot of fiddling with the red stripe that runs

red stripe. At some point the stripe was bordered by two thin white
stripes....
Finally they went back to the plane red stripe....

There were a lot of people who just complained because the new one looked

But the most interesting complaint that I heard was that very few people
trusted Little Eddie to keep the team in San Francisco once the "SF" was
removed from the team logo. That is, a lot of people felt that this logo
change was a subtle opening move towards eventually moving the team maybe
further down the valley to a new stadium.
If that's what he really wants to do, Little Eddie will have to be a bit
more open about it next time. The "public" was a bit smarter than he

A couple of them looked OK, but most were downright UUUGG-LEEE! I also
won't comment on the team names. I dunno, I don't think this league is
gonna make it, no matter how much money the NFL throws at it.
Best:
Birmingham Fire. Black helmet with red, yellow & orange flames
shooting to the back of the helmet. Most of the flame part is at the
front of the helmet, sort of like Michigan.
Barcelona Dragons had a black helmet, with a red & yellow dragon,
kind of ornate, but fierce enough looking. At least they didn't have
some tame looking cartoon.
London Monarchs: Gold helmet, with a blue "M" that looks like a
royal crown. Not a bad logo.
Worst:
Frankfurt Galaxy. Red and Purple, with this cluster of white
spots in the center.
Montreal Machine: Maroon, with a big "M" on it, light blue and
gold trim.
San Antonio Riders: Brown, with a silhouette of a guy on a horse,
over a backdrop of a Texas flag. Why did I immediately think of Federal
Express or UPS when I saw this?
