| I've only seen aobut 4 or 5 Lakers games this year, so it's hard to be
as accurate as I was with my objectivity of a year ago. I perceive
that Magic is firing up a significantly higher number of treys and that
the Lakers half court offense means less easy baskets (drives down the
lane) and more 24-second clock-running-out heaves. I also believe he's
not getting some of the calls that he's used to.

Dan with a name like Clang it quite obvious wht the Celts feel no need to

| Mike, think back to game 3 1985 playoffs in Boston Garden. I think it
was a Sunday afternoon. Almost the entire 3rd quarter, the Lakers fed
James who was being guarded by Bird, and on an infinite variety of
lightning first steps and spin moves, the defensive talents of Bird
were revealed. So the Celtics put McHale on him. James popped a few
times from outside, and when Kevin stepped out it was time to blow by
the freak. Can you think back to the your expression during that game,
the way your face was all screwed up in agony? That's the way your

LAKERS have now won 12 games in a row. Next up is Atlanta on
Fri. night.
Thus far, I've only seen 1 full game, that being the last time
they played Phoenix. I only caught the C's game in bits and pieces.
From what I saw on Sunday, it looks like they're finally settling
into Dunleavy's system, which includes a lot less running. :(
Rebounding, not known to be a strength during the 80's, is probably
the area in which they've improved the most, thanks to Perkins.
They are somewhat vulnerable to teams with dominant centers and
fortunately, there aren't many of those left nowdays. Their 31-11
record after 42 games is exactly where they were last year at the same
point.
Atlanta has been playing well as of late. Should be a good game.

LAKERS win their 15th straight victory with a 99-86 victory
over Chicago, thus tying the second longest winning streak in club
history(the first being the league-record 33 wins set back in 1972).
Lowlight of the game occurred when Magic tripped over Terry Teagle
while retreating on defense. While falling, he was accidentally
kicked in the head by Horace Grant before his head hit the floor.
He was unconscious for a little while before walking to the locker
room. The AP report states that he suffered a concussion and possibly
a slight case of amnesia. He's not expected to be hospitalized for
long.
Difference in the game was in bench scoring. LAKER subs accounted
for 36 points(led by Teagle w/16, Worthy with 12, T. Smith with 8),
compared to something like 8 for the Bulls bench. LAKERS led 76-74 when
Magic went down with 7 seconds left in the 3rd quarter; they only allowed
12 Chicago points in the 4th.
Mike Heiser came up from the desert and watched the Suns dismantle
the Pissed-ons(tm) 112-97. Debil Dawg, Heiser and myself were actually
united against the same foe at first(actually, Jesse and I were rooting
for Detriot(tm) to lose rather than for Phoenix to win). Heiser even
asked me why wasn't I wearing a Suns cap for crying out loud! :-) It
might have been unbearable if there wasn't a LAKER game on to restore
some semblance of normalcy! :-)

Lakers this year? The few games I've seen it hasn't happened, and Laker
defense has been excellent, although I haven't noticed anybody giving
that fact much notice.

Man oh man what is that smell coming from Clevland? Oh, it must
be Groaner & the Cavs trying to find a clue.
Didn't see the game as I had to work. From the boxscore, looks
like it was close throughout. Also looks like X-man was a no-show,
with only 6 points.
As they say, all good things come to an end. The winning streak
basically vaulted LA past Phoenix into 2nd place. I'm not sure of the
date, but there is a game against Portland very soon. With Portland
tearing it up with 40 wins, LA very hot, and Phoenix playing the role
of streak-breaker(they also snapped winning streaks by Detroit and
Atlanta I think), the Pacific division is arguably the strongest in
the NBA.
I kind of like it that Baahston will be paying a visit to the
Forum right about now. What better way to start another winning streak
by having what should be an easy scrimmage against the Wolves. Then,
to really get things going, our favorite whipping boys from the East
will be here to get the 2nd part of their annual schooling. Didn't you
guys had learn your lesson earlier this year? Guess it's time for
remedial training. :-)

| Lakers fall to the McHale-less Celtics. Jimmy Clang was unstoppable at
times, but was invisible when it counted. Bird didn't shoot well, but
had a triple double. Parish was awesome early {21 points in the first
quarter), Reggie Lewis was hot late, and Brian Shaw played a strong game
overall. Dee Brown got significant minutes and had some good plays and
some forced shots.
Yakoff Divac showed his limitations... i.e. he's from the Akeem Olaujowan
school of basketball - great physical skills and instincts but no real
understanding of the game whatsoever. If not for the "home cookin'"
from the refs, he would have fouled out early in the third quarter.
Sam Perkins was repeatedly identified by the announcers as playing
terrible and Byron Scott hit a couple hoops early and then went on
vacation.
This Laker team is good, but nowhere near as scary as past teams. They
miss Cooper's presence.
Loved watching the LA "faithful" start filing out with the Lakers down
10 and 3 minutes to play.

Switched over from TNT with a couple of minutes left and Bob Cousy was
giving it to a dazed and befuddled Jack Nicholson. Seems they were
on the golf course together that afternoon and ol' Jack was getting a
razzing for his game and just replied, "Wait till tonight, boys..."

LAKERS go 1 for 2 in the big games this weekend - losing to Boston
98-85, while beating Portland 106-96.
One noter in the Celtics conf. thought that the LAKERS might have
'looked past' Friday night's game. From the boxscore, looks like
Scott and Perkins certainly did 'cause you know Magic and James came to
play. It's moments like that when I wish that Norm Nixon had never been
traded. Off or on, Norm could be counted to give it his all every night.
With Byron, if the moon is full, then he'll have a good game. Either
way, congrats to Boston for a well-played game(especially from Parish).
LAKERS are now 3 1/2 games behind Portland and 9 ahead of Phoenix,
who lost to Houston Saturday night.

| The Celtics played a great game Friday night. I keep on forgetting how
valuable Lewis can be. With all the talk about Gamble, Shaw, and Brown
and the new running game, Lewis hasn't had much press since his contract
signing. Lewis is like the microwave when he gets hot. He will stick in
a difficult shot with someone in his face everytime. THe Celtics
certainly looked like a title contender so far on the west coast trip.
Parish was immense and the Lakers had no answer for him.
As for the Lakers it was Magic and Worthy and nothing else. Scott, Divac,
and Perkins were no shows. No big surprise about Scott and Divac although
Perkins no show is surprising since he is usually very consistant. I
think he had trouble with the quickness of Gamble, Lewis, and even Pickney.
Divac simply needs to be stronger in the post (nothing new here).
I feel Mr. Ross dig on Worthy was unwarrented since it was crunch time
for the Lakers the entire game. If Worthy wasn't hot early, it would have
been a blow out from the beginning. Worthy had a fine game but couldn't
hit from the top of the key and looked bad trying.
Anyone have the report from the Portland game.

ALso missing from Doug's colorful commentary was that James was the
reason Bird had a horrible shooting night, keeping a hand in Larry's
face consistently on the J, and never once getting beaten off the
dribble. Of course, the only times Larry "guarded" James, he was eaten
alive, but usually Ford looked elsewhere for help.
WHen the Celtics saw they couldn't stop James with a man, the
double-teamed him effectively in the second half. Unfortunately, there
was no one to can the J, as Perkins and Scott didn't show up until
Sunday night.

| Yeah, James' shooting percentage has really dropped. I blame
Dunleavy's offensive strategy for this. Under Dunleavy, Magic
and Worthy are the only offensive threats. And in his never-
ending efforts to imitate Detroit, he has slowed the offense
down to a crawl, and has abandonned the trapping defense that
Riley employed so effectively; hence, no forced turnovers and
no easy transition baskets. Worthy might hate Riley, but if
Riley were still coach, they would all be having better seasons.
Except of course for Byron Scott, who is now a gutless, spineless,
loser, regardless of the coach.

In what will forever be refered to as Black Tuesday 1991, the dreaded Lakers
took over the Western Division top rung from the Trailblazers....
Portland lost last night tonight to Golden St.
Chicago has a three game lead in the loss columun on both the hip horray the
greatest franchise ever CELTICS and the Lakers, 4 on Portland. And the Pistons?

| LA's emergence will be short-lived. They will lose in Seattle tonight.
Meanwhile, the Suns are only 2 games back (same margin separates the 3
Pacific teams).
And look at the Midwest where the hot Rockets are only 1 games behind
Utah.

LAKERS win game 1 126-116. I mean, really, was there ever any
doubt. :) The Warriors look like a bunch of waterbugs running around,
waiting for someone to spray them with a big dose of RAID. :-)
On a serious note, what's wrong with Chris Mullin?

UPDATE:
The Lakers signed James Worthy to a "multi-year" contract, no terms
were elaborated.
This snuffs out the "Worthy as trade-bait" rumor-mongers ......

Just cause they signed him doesn't mean they can't trade his rights. It just
let's the other teams know what they'll have to pay Jimmy Clang if they want
him. Personally I hope he stays in LA he's obviously slipping and it couldn't
happen to a better team to be stuck with a high priced limited player....

| Unfortunately for us Laker-haters, that makes ol' Jimmy Clang EASIER
to trade, cuz he's locked into a contract.
Mike's right - I too think the Lakers owe it to Jimmy to let him
finish out his career as a Laker!

| Can someone fill me in as to whether James Worthy has displayed all
that talent he'd supposedly been suppressing all those years when Magic
was on the team? You know, how he didn't rebound because the Lakers
were a fast breaking team and he had to release early... and how he
would carry a team if he could only get the chance.

| Mr. Ross,
Although the coaches and players in the NBA disagree with you, you
must be right. I guess you forgot the Worthy made the all-star team again
this year (choosen by a rival coach). Worthy was never and will never
be a big rebounder. Maybe people in the past overrated his all-around game
but no one has been farther from the truth than you. What a great time
for you to bring this up. Worthy is 31? and has tons of mileage on his
legs. He is certainly on the decline and the Lakers are struggling without
Magic, injuries to Divac and now Perkins. There is no doubt in my mind that
Worthy can NOT carry this team so enjoy it now because Worthy will most likely
have his number retired, make the HOF, and (rightfully so) be remembered as a
great player.

| I rented a video the other night called Fantastic Finishes. It showed
some pretty incredible shots as time expired. One that really caught
my eye was the shot Jerry West made vs. the Knicks in 1970, from behind
the center court line. It tied the game as the clock expired and sent
it into OT. The Knicks went on to win (as poetic justice would have
it) because the shot should have never been allowed. The Knicks had
made the go-ahead basket with about three seconds left and Chamberlin
took the ball out of bounds. (Sort of) He had one foot just behind
the line and his other firmly planted about three feet inbounds. It
was so blatent I picked it up regualar speed. What's really a joke is
that the ref was standing right next to him and watched it.
I can see how they let it go when it doesn't matter, but in a
championship series like that? I wonder if anything was ever made of
that back then?
