| I just wanted to pass along a little info on the Saturday bowling show
on Channel 5 in Boston.
I had the opportunity to bring NRADM::KINGR (Rick) to a taping this
past Monday. Without giving it all away, all I can say is Rick and
myself were certainly impressed with the level of bowling done. The
show I am speaking of doesn't air until March 2nd. I will send
out a reminder as the date approaches. For anyone who likes this show,
you won't want to miss it.

| re .6 (anyone who bowls candlepins more often than I do feel free to
correct any of the following or add more info):
Candlepin bowling is played in New England and a few Canadian
provinces. The pins are long skinny pins, a little over a foot high
and about an inch or so wide (don't know the exact dimensions). The
balls weigh around three pounds, and are about the size of a softball.
I think the lanes are the same length as regular tenpin lanes. You get
three balls per frame vs. two in tenpin bowling. One other big
difference in candlepins is that the deadwood is not cleared between
shots like in tenpins. Scoring is the same as in tenpins (except that
if you knock down all ten pins in exactly three balls it's scored as
ten).

I don't know the exact dimensions, but I think the pins are closer to
three inches in diameter, and slightly tapered on the ends.
Another reason the game is more difficult is the spacing between pins
in relation to the size of the ball. "Chopping" out the 1, 5 pins is
common, as is chopping out the 2-8 and 3-9. In my case, the second
ball and the third ball usually pass through the same hole. In
tenpins, a ball going right between two pins can get 'em both.

| RE: py.....CLOSE!
Candlepin bowling was invented (as a modification of nine pin) in the
great city of Worcester (Wusta) for you outta staters, around the turn
of the century. It is predominantly played in Mass, NH, Maine, and the
province of New Brunswick Canada.
The pins are 12" in height, and vary from 2 1/2 to 2 3/4" in width.
The ball is about the size of a softball, and can legally weigh between
2 lbs 4 oz, and 2 lbs 7 oz. The lanes are exactly thet same dimensions
of ten pin, or duck pin. 3 balls per frame, scoring is the same.
A typical score in candlepins for a first timer is anywhere from
80-100. Most "Pro's" will average between 115-135. Depending on the
house averages will vary. Massachusetts is know for it's "honest"
houses, while some of your New Hampshire houses tend to be "fast".
Lane conditions determine the fastness. Most of the 130 bowlers of NH,
would only be in the low 120's in Mass.
Candlepin bowling is governed by the International Candlepin Bowling
Association ICBA. The professional tour is governed by the World
Candlepin Bowlers Congress WCBC. To be eligible for the WCBC, you
must maintain a 112 for men, and 105 (I think) for women.
Because of the economic boom of the 80's, a lot of houses have been
sold to developers. Candlepin bowling has gone from a family game to a
competitive game. Most alleys accomodate leagues, but suffer due to a
lack of "open" bowling.
As for TV in New England, there is only one MAJOR show, and a few
others. WCVB Channel 5 in Boston has had its shown on the air since
1959. It consistantly outnumbers all sports shows on TV during the
weekend. The prize money is not bad, but the competition to get on the
show is tough. It is very rare to see a sub 120 bowler on the show.
Other shows include Candlepin Doubles (right after the singals show on
Saturday). This show teams two men/wommen as a team, against another
team.
NESN (pay cable) broadcasts Big Shot Bowling. Only WCVB "Pro" bowlers
are eligible for this show. Most of the bowlers on the channel 5 show,
also appear on NESN.
WNDS TV50 (Derry, NH) broadcasts Stars and Strikes. No limtitations,
but most of the bowlers come out of NH.
There are other "regional" shows I am not aware of.
As for the show Rick and I witnessed, you won't be able to miss us.
For those with a color TV, I am the one with the white shirt and red
tie. Rick has the green shirt.

| RE: Park Place lanes
Not to put down these alleys, but they have got to be the fastest
alleys I have ever seen. Stars and Strikes tape their shows there.
You can see that they put a lot of silicon on the plates. I never seen
pins slide across a plate so easily. All you need to do is tape them
and they fall.
A buddy of mine bowls there periodically. He taped 3 shows for Stars
and stikes on one sunday. His three total scores for the day were:
446, 382, and 456. To me, that is unheard of. He is a great bowler,
but those scores don't happen that easy. By the way, he is the top
seed, in for the Stars and Strikes championship. He is also the guy,
Rick and I went to watch monday.
I am going to bowl in the star and strikes roll-off at park place lanes
on January 27. Any hints I should know before I go up the Darryl?
Londonderry is another fast house in NH. If you want an honest house,

My league bowls on the same lanes that Star and Stripes uses.
I live in Londonderry and think Londonderry Bowling Center is a

being what you'd call "honest". I call em dead.
Tips from me? RTG, if you've made the cut for Star and Stripes,

I meant "Roll-off" in the last reply. A roll-off is how you get on
channel 5. It consists of 5 strings of bowling at a qualifying house,
typically ones home alleys. Then the top 3 bowlers go to the area
finals. At the area finals, you compete against the top 3 guys from 15
houses. The ONE guy who comes out on top, goes on TV. As you might
imagine, it is very difficult to beat 45 guys, let alone 45 good
bowlers.

74.46 | OVERAVERAGE TOURNAMENT | LUDWIG::WHITEHAIR | Don't just sit there.......Do it now! | Mon May 06 1991 09:32 | 76 |
|
Ok, the qualification rounds for this tournament started back in
December......and I haven't seen anybody write anything about it.
THE OVERAVERAGE TOURNAMENT
Is anyone in it?
To pull my own string and to explain what it is...
Sence December, the top 6 bowlers of the month with the highest
overaverage score, 3 games combined. It cost 1.00 each time you plan
to try. So, durring league play, you pay your buck and bowl your
regular league game. If you bowl over your average and are one of the
highest overaverage bowlers of the month, you get your name on the
chart. At the end of the month, the top 6, automaticly get entered
into the semi finals held last weekend. This went on up untill the end
of last month.
Well, my girlfriend and myself entered durring our last league
game. Beleive it or not, we both made the cut. I bowled 31 pins
overaverage and my girlfriend bowled 26 pins overaverage. I got the
6th spot and my firlfriend got tied for the 4th spot. My average is
94 and my girlfriends' average is 74.
The semi finals which were held last Saturday went well. My
girlfriend bowled great...94...74...84. I didn't do that bad either,
111, 84 and a 105. My girlfriend got a handicap of 108 pins and placed
4th out of 20 women. I placed 7th out of 25 men. The top 6 bowlers go
to the finals, held in western Mass. Jeane goes, no questions asked.
Now for the funny thing...In the mens division the second place guy
screws things up...As everyone is standing around to see who won, one
guy steps up and says that he didn't bowl what was written, a 119 by
the way, which placed him in second place. The 119 game was his first
game. Someone asked, what did you bowl? He said, there was a 40 pin
difference....He bowled a 74! WHAT? The guy at the desk just said, Oh
well, there is nothing he can do about it, sorry, here is your money
and you still go to the tournament. Well, this sort of pissed me off
because I was the 7th place finisher, only 2 pins behind the 6th place
finisher. So, after the lane manager listed the guys who will go to
the finals, I say, so, I don't get to go? The second place guy started
telling me he was sorry. What good does that do? Then he said he
wasn't going to go to the tournament because his wife had also made the
tournament and he was going with her. He told the manager this and I
was then informed that I was eligable to go. Thats all fine and good
but, the question remains, this guy got the second place money. In
all actuallity, he shouldn't have gotten anything. I should have
gotten the 6th place money instead of the 7th place money...what a rip!
Is this kind of thing normal? Someone in here said they knew all
the rules? I don't. I've only been bowling candlepin one year...this
year. It doesn't sound right to me.
Anyway, the finals is on the 19th of this month...the grand prise
is
$ 2 5 , 0 0 0 . 0 0
I'm not sure if I'll go or not though, I feel my girlfriend has a
better chance than I because of her handicap.
One other thing, most of these people that bowled in this tournament
are really jerks. They were really stuck up. We are not pros but it
did feel good to say to ourselves, TAKE THAT!
There, I feel better now!

74.47 | Oh yea, that tournament! | NRADM::GALVIN | o..........|||| Candlepins | Wed May 08 1991 13:18 | 41 |
| Hal,
I would be interested in kowing what house you qualified in. That
sounds absurd. All I can add is that, the manager is to blame for the
screw-up. He is the 'official' scorer, and is solely responsible for
verifying the scores. I work one night a week at Crowell Bowl in Stow.
We held both of our house roll-offs last week. The way we run it, is
each bowler is given a scorecard to fill out. He is the one
responsible for entering his score. The manager then picks up the
cards after EACH string and verifys. If this guy indeed bowled a
lower string, we would have caught this. It sounds as if your place
didn't have individual scorecards. Also, for the money.....For us, we
had the top 6 places receiving the same amount per person. The
remaining money was then distributed in cascading order. 1st thru 6th
got the same amount, plus a trip to the area finals.
Personally speaking, I qualified in February. Going into the mens
finals, I had this to look back on - 2 years ago, I ended up in dead
last for the house roll-off. 1 year ago, I ended up in 1st place in
the house roll-off.....So, what do think for this year? 40 guys
bowled, I came in 20th. Right in the middle this time.
The womens 'area' finals are in Stow, so you can be assured there will
be no screw-ups. As for the grand prize, I have to make a slight
correction for you. The 25K is spread across 5 places, in 6 areas.
Only the top 5 finalists get money. Gauranteed first place per area
per man/woman is $1,000 and a weeks trip to Citrus Hills in Florida.
Accommodations and air fare included.
Needless to say, I won't be bowling in the finals.
As for SNOBS.....That's hard to take for me. I have been bowling for
23 years. I consider myself (some could argue this) an above average
bowler. Snobbing people beacuse they don't have above par averages is
not the norm where I travel to. I bowl in about 15-20 different houses
in the course of a year. Eastern/Southern mass, and Southern NH, are
all corteous people and houses. I have not bowled out 'west' in 10
years so I can't comment there. Hope this attitude people have doesn't
take you from the game.

The money is distributed to the top 5 finishers per area. ~60
men/women will cash.

RTB,
I didn't know how the money was split, but knew there
was 25 grand involved...thanks for clearing that up.
The way the scoring went, was, all the bowlers were
responsible for keeping score durring the game. We had the
regular score sheet for writing the game results. One of the
bowlers would write each players score on this sheet and when
all the bowlers were finished bowling on their two lanes (one game)
the score sheet was taken up to the person who wrote the score on
the tournament roster. We would then move two lanes over and bowl
one more game...etc.
You would have thought this guy would have checked the
tournament roster after each game.......or at least sometime
before the final scores were being tallied.
I bowled at the Athol, Lucky Lanes...downtown Athol.
They have 12 lanes. Our league only had 6 teams in it. The
guy that owns the lanes is a very nice guy and the people who
work for him are also very nice. Its just that they one guy
who was keeping the final tally, I feel, screwed up. The owner
of the lanes was not there when the tournament ended.
They paid six places in the womens division and 8 places
in the mens division. I placed 7th and got 10.00. I understand
that the first place woman got only about $30.00. I have no idea
what the 1st place man got.
In my league, there were only a few people who were jerks.
These were the *very* serious ones. Most of the people that were
in the tournament was taking it very seriously too. I mean, there
one time when I forgot what ball I had thrown, I thought it was the
third and reset the pins. No one said a thing...I went back to the
guy scoreing and asked....he said, yep I had only thrown 2 balls.
Now, if I had noticed someone getting ready to reset before
throwning all his balls, I would have told him so.
Anyway, the mens tournament is held in Hadley and the
womens tournament is held in Ayre, I think....some Valley lanes.
I'm suposto go to the league banquet next Saturday and I'll
ask the owner then about the thing durring the tournament.
Later...

| Hal,
It is unfortunate that the rules are not consistant, but between you
and me, I don't expect the over average tourney to be back next year,
unless they revamp it.
Well, best of luck to you and your girlfriend if you do go. One thing
to remember, everyones chance to win is the same. To me, it is a
little tougher for a 125 bowler to beat out a 95 bowler because of the
format.
I would like to discuss this "handicap" thing with you (probably off
line). It was my understanding that no handicap is involved. I will
follow-up withj you on this one.
$1,000 and a trip would be enough to get me to go........RTG

74.51 | The Ultimate Bowling show | GOLF::GALVIN | When GOLF goes down, go golfin' | Tue Aug 20 1991 13:28 | 33 |
| Well, Saturday August 24th is fast approaching, and we all know what
that means......The True Value Candlepin Championship show!!!!!!!!!
It will air from 6:30 to 8:00 saturday night on channel 5 in Boston.
This is a live show (the only one of its kind).
The format for this years show is different from previous. The number
on seed will only bowl in the championship round. 5 will bowl 4, then
the winner bowl 3, then 2, then championship.
Prize money is the same - 10K for first, 5K second, etc. etc.
The show will be held at Pilgrim Lanes in Haverhill MA, for anyone in
the area. Get there early, as seats (especially ones in camera view)
to fast.
The show consists of the 5 guys (or women) with the highest total score
on the regular show for the past year. REK and myself were witness to
the number 2 seeded guys show. I am not 100% sure of this, but I have
heard that the number 1 seed for this year, will actually make it on
this saturdays regular show. This may be somewhat confusing. The
regular show has already been taped for air on the 24th at 12:00.
According to a source, Gary Casey will role a 450-something on that
show, making him number 1 seed for the live show at 6:30. If this is
indeed true, then the 12:00 this saturday should not be missed.
The other bowlers escape me except for Gary Carrington and Paul Berger
(former DECcie). It will be a great show nevertheless.
Be sure and tune it to the number 1 rated sports show in Boston!!!!!

| Well, the results are in......I know each of you, espcially Kev have
been holding your breath.
The winner of the $10,000 first prize, is Gary Casey of Fitchburg MA.
He beat Joe Tavernese, from Lynn MA, who had climbed all the way from
the fourth seed. Joe got $5,000 for his efforts.
Results:
1st match - Tavernese beat Paul Berger ($1,000)
2nd - Tavernese beat Tom Olszta ($1,500)
3rd - Tavernese beat Gary Carrington ($2,500)
Championship - Casey beat Tavernese 265 to 245 in a 2 string match.
BTW, the WCBC (World Candlepin Bowlers Congress) aka "The Pro Tour"
gets its 1991-92 season under way in 3 weeks. The first tour stop will
be held in Brocton MA.
Rules for being on the tour are Men - must carry a 112 average minimum.
Women must have a 102 average minimum. Costs for the year are $375 for
men, and $300 for women.
Officers for this years WCBC are, President - Mike Morrill, and VP Joe
Ashline.

the year.

| This was a great show. Tavernese was hot right from the start. He
buried Paul Berger 151-111, then had two survive a lob and a scary
finish from the always explosive Tom Olzsta 138-130. Tavernese then
swamped Gary Carrington 141-108 before running out of gas against
Casey. He was actually up by eight pins after the first string,
but Casey pulled away in the second string of the finals.

For those of you who follow candlepins, particularly the TV shows, here
is some sad news.
About a week and a half ago Peter Flynn (who coincidently has appeared
on the big three TV shows; Ch 5, Ch 50 and NESN in the last three
weeks) suffered a brain hemorrhage. He has been admitted to Methuen MA
hospital for treatment. Early indications are not good. The number
one concern is whether or not he will live. Whatever happens then is
up to a higher force.
Peter is only about 35 years old, and has been one of the top candlepin
bowlers over the last 20 years. He has been named Pro Bowler of the
year more then once, and hold many of the records on the TV shows.
Most of the guys heading up to Canada for next weeks World Invitational
Torunament will be dedicating it to Pete.
Good Luck to him on a recovery.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have to let some people in on the results of an upcoming Channel 5
(Boston) bowling show. Because of the Mass State Tournament, WCVB has
taped several of its upcoming shows already. This past Monday, Paul
Berger (an ex-DECcie) taped the show to air on May 2nd 12:00.
Paul ended up with scores of 158, 149, and 193, for a three string
total of **500**. This is the highest triple ever thrown on TV. For
you non candlepiners, it is very difficult to throw a 166, let alone
average that for 3 strings under the hot lights.
Mark it in your calendars. May 2nd....Crank up the VCR for this one.
