The following excerpt is from "The President's Point" portion of the
November/December 1990 issue of Table Tennis Topics. The article was
written by USTTA president, Dan Seemiller.
"The dates and site of the 1991 U.S. Open have been determined and
the winner of this bid was Midland, Michigan. The dates are June
19-23, 1991. The ITTF has guaranteed the attendance of the world's
leading players. Plan on being there! The U.S. Open is now on a
bid system and the USTTA received 3 excellent bids. The other two
were Greensboro, NC and Lakeland, FL. Midland is located 100 miles
north of Detroit and is home to the Dow Corporation and Mr. Frank
Chen. Mr. Chen's bid was overwhelming and included guarantees of
200 volunteers and over $40,000 sponsorship money already raised.
Midland is a city of 50,000 and is located only 10 minutes drive
from Saginaw Bay. I have personally inspected the playing site
and the city and this is going to be a great U.S. Open. Mr. Chen
is a native of Taiwan and is very involved in table tennis.
Together we hope to put on a show that will be great for the players,
the sponsors, the city of Midland, and the international participants.
Dow Corporation is Midland and an excellent corporate connection
for the USTTA. So look for your entry and plan on attending this
year's U.S. Open. The level of play will approach a World level
tournament."

65.9 | 1991 U.S. Open Results | HOCKEY::HAYES | Give blood....play hockey! | Tue Jun 25 1991 17:33 | 43 |
| Men's Singles Semifinals
------------------------
Yoo Nam Kyu (Korea, 1988 Olympic Gold Medalist)
def.
Johhny Huang (Canada, North American Champion)
3 games to 1. Huang took the first game, Kyu took the second. Third game
went to deuce...definitely the highlight of the tournament. Huang took
the advantage in deuce 4 times, but could not put Kyu away. Kyu came back
with some incredible shots to tie it up on each disadvantage. Kyu finally
broke through and took the game 26-24. Huang seemed to lose his composure
here, and Kyu took the 4th game to advance to the finals.
Zoran Primorac (Yugoslavia)
def.
Ding Yi (Austria)
3 games to 1. Primorac was in control the first two games, defeating Yi
fairly easily. Yi fought back and took the third game, and jumped out to
a 12-3 lead in the fourth. It looked like Primorac was on the edge of
losing it, but then went on an incredible run of 8 straight points. Yi
was helpless during this time, but finally got another point (13-11).
Primorac then ran off another streak of 6 or 7 points, and cruised on to
win the game and the match 21-14.
Men's Singles Finals
--------------------
Zoran Primorac
def.
Yoo Nam Kyu
This was a highly entertaining match. I was sitting in the stands very near
to some of the other members of the Korean team (they cheered quite loudly
at every point Kyu won). Kyu took the first two games without too much
difficulty, and it looked like it would be a quick match. But Primorac
fought back to win the third game in deuce. The momentum started to shift,
as Primorac took the fourth. The fifth game saw Primorac completely in
control, as he took the match and the 1991 U.S. Open Championship, along with
the $10,000 first prize, 21-10.

| The secret is in the dimpling on the paddle.
Without a doubt, the more dimples, the better aerodynamic properties.
A totally flat paddle (like a slick racing tire) gives GREAT adhesion,
and produces more cries of "Thank you sir, may I have another".
A dimpled paddle produces much greater speed, and a heartier sting
that takes the breath away.

Sandpaper paddles are not allowed at USTTA-sanctioned tournaments, except
possibly for special events specifically for non-regulation paddles.
The most common type of paddle used today has inverted rubber with a layer
of sponge. These produce the highest velocity and greatest amount of
spin. There are also those who use pips-out rubber, which (depending on
the length of the pips) is used for very deceptive and unpredictable
shots, or to minimize the effect of your opponents' spin.

| Doc,
Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of places (ie, sporting goods stores)
which sell good rubber. There are a few independent sellers, though.
I can try and get a few names, if you like.
I buy most of my rubber through the mail from a supplier in Oregon (it's
called Paddle Palace...I don't have the address handy right at this
moment). They have a toll-free number for orders, the owners are *very*
knowledgeable, and very helpful if you have questions. They ship orders
out UPS the same day as you order, so it gets here in just a few days.
Another place I just thought of right now is Sharpshooters Billiards,
on Amherst Street in Nashua. The owner is just getting in to becoming
a distributer for Butterfly equipment, so he may have something.
Donald
PS Sorry for the delay in answering...I don't get a chance to read

| re .34:
The New Hampshire Table Tennis Club meets Tuesdays nights at the Boy's
and Girl's Club on Union Street, Manchester. Also, another branch of
our club meets Thursdays (I think) at New Hampshire College in Hooksett.
There is also another club in Claremont....I've never been to that one,
but I know the guys who run it, and could find out more if you like.
There are also clubs in Massachusetts, which may be further than you
want to travel. The ones I can think of off the top of my head are in
Fitchburg, Waltham, MIT, and Somerville. Let me know if you would
like more details.
There are also a few guys who play at a billiards place in Nashua
(Cue-tips (sp) in the Simineau (sp....again) Plaza) on Mondays and
Wednesdays. Supposedly, they run a handicap tournament (better player
has to spot points) every Sunday. I haven't been down there yet, but
will make it one of these days.

DEADLINE: The deadline for entering singles is 10:00 pm, Thursday, June 25,
1992. To enter, telephone David Marcus (617) 492-4317 or mail entry to
David Marcus; 25 Beacon St. Apt. 16; Somerville, MA, 02143-4336. There is a
charge of $1 per event for late entries or entries lost in the mail. No extra
charge for phone entries. Make check payable to Dr. David J. Marcus.
DIRECTIONS: From the west, take Massachusetts Turnpike to exit 18 (Cambridge
exit). Bear right. Turn right just before bridge onto Storrow Drive (sign
on right for Guest Quarters Suite Hotel). Go 8/10 mile and take exit on right.
Gym is tan building on right. To get back to the Turnpike, turn right onto
Commonwealth Ave. (big street with trolley running down middle). Take next
right and go over bridge. Use rotary to turn left onto Memorial Drive. Go
7/10 mile and turn left onto Western Ave. bridge. Take next left. Turnpike
entrance is next right. From I-93, take Massachusetts Turnpike to exit 20
(Cambridge exit). Bear right. Turn right just before bridge onto Storrow
Drive. Continue as above. Parking: There is a parking lot next to the gym
which is free Sunday, but you may have to pay on Saturday. Parking on
Commonwealth Ave. is free Sunday and metered Saturday ($2 in quarters for 4
hours). If you turn left onto COmmonwealth Ave., you will find two parking
lots within a block at 510 and 766 Commonwealth Ave.
AWARDS: In the events were the award is not money, you will receive your
choice of a trophy, equipment, or a shirt. Every player will receive a small
gift.
ELIGIBILITY: You must be a member of the USTTA. If you are not a member, then
you must join the USTTA by including the membership fee with your entry fee.
Members receive Topics, the magazine of the USTTA. If you are a member, then
you must bring your membership card or a valid membership receipt (the special
form you received when you purchased your membership at a tourney). If you
don't bring your card or receipt, you will have to purchase a one year
extension to your membership.
DOUBLES: The deadline for doubles is the starting time of the event. Enter
doubles on the day of the event. The entry fee for doubles is $4 per player.
FORMAT: All events are single elimination. All matches are two out of three,
except Handicap which is one game to 51, and the final of the Open Singles
which is three out of five.
SCHEDULE: If we are lucky, all events will finish around dinner time. In any
case, all events will finish at roughly the same time regardless of the
individual starting times. All events run at the same time. When you play
has nothing to do with the starting time of the events. Please check in by the
starting time of your first event.
EQUIPMENT: Only USTTA approved equipment will be used: 6-10 Stiga Expert VM,
4 Butterfly Europa, and 4 Detroiter tables; Donic, Stiga, and Double
Happiness nets. There will be at lealst two practice tables. Bring your own
white three-star Nittaku ball (or you may purchase one at the tourney).
HANDICAP EVENT: This is not for physical handicaps; rather the weaker player
is spotted points.
UNRATED PLAYERS: If you haven't played in a sanctioned tourney before, then
you are unrated. If you have no idea what your rating should be, then we
suggest you enter the 1050, 1150, 1350, and 1450 events. You will not advance
to the next round (even if you win) after playing a rated player in the 850
through 2200 Singles; you may enter these events for $4 each. You cannot only
enter the Unrated Singles; you must also enter one of the other events. You
cannot enter Doubles or Handicap.
RULES: All USTTA regulations apply. One side of the racket must be bright
red, the other black. You must throw the ball up six inches when you serve.
RATINGS: All singles events except Handicap will be rated. Unrated players
who play in the tourney will get a rating. If you play in a rated singles
event, then you must pay the $3 rating fee. It generally takes four weeks
after the tourney for national rating chairman Dan Simon to process the results
and produce the new ratings. The easiest way for you to find out your new
rating is to look for it in Topics. The tournament dircetors reserve the right
to assign or modify ratings to promote fair competition.
CLOTHING: USTTA dress code applies. Solid nonwhite colors are legal. No
black-soled shoes.

65.40 | Waldner won the Gold | MAIL::TAYLOR | Mark Taylor, St. Louis | Fri Aug 07 1992 16:49 | 16 |
| Hi. I'm a Table Tennis enthusiast, and this is my first entry here...
Well, from very scant information I was able to determine that Waldner (Sweden)
defeated Gatien (France) for the Olympic Men's Gold medal. In three games!
In fact, it sounds like Waldner lost a grand total of 1 game through the
whole competition.
Who is Gatien? NBC said he is the number one player in the world - is this
true, what has he won?
Waldner is my favorite - I really like his style.
By the way, NBC said they would carry the final Thursday night, but I
did not see it and am a bit irritated.

The latest rankings I have (a bit out of date....March 1992) have
Gatien ranked 3rd behind Persson and Waldner. I don't have any real
recent results, but Gatien did win the English Open back in January and
lost in the quarters during the European Championships (to Jean-Michel
Saive) in April. I personally haven't seen Gatien play much.
> Waldner is my favorite - I really like his style.
I agree....Waldner is a lot of fun to watch. I saw him play at the
1990 US Open in Baltimore. The one match I missed was the one where
he was down 14-19 in the fifth game (quarterfinals, I think) and he got
the next seven point to take the match. I did see the semis and finals,
and he played very well.
> By the way, NBC said they would carry the final Thursday night, but I
> did not see it and am a bit irritated.
I set my VCR to tape both Wednesday and Thursday, and I think there
was a grand total of about 5 minutes worth of play. NBC's coverage
was definitely poor for table tennis. I too was quite irritated.....

>> I watched a bit of the [mumble] Invitational Table Tennis Tournament

I keep wondering if I should get NESN just so I can watch things
like this....... Someone mentioned this at lunch today....the match
was Jim Butler vs. Karlsson from Sweden, I believe. Top players like
this can hit the ball upwards of 100 mph....and with the table only
9 feet long, that doesn't give much time for reactions.
>> And while I'm in the neighborhood of this note, did I ever ask if
>> there was any difference between table tennis and ping-pong, other
>> than the spelling?
I think this was asked before (maybe in the previous sports conference).
The answer is no, there is no real difference between table tennis and
ping pong. The term "ping pong" is actually of registered trademark of
one of the game companies (Parker Brother's, I think.....the ones who
make Nerf balls), so in theory they are the only ones that can legally
use that name (eg, as the name of a product). Table tennis is the
official name of the sport. The only "difference" is that people use
"ping pong" to refer to what most people play in their basement once
in a while.
If you're in the area of any of the tournaments coming up, feel free to
stop by and watch. Spectators are always welcome. You won't see the
same level as on NESN, but there are a lot of very good players in the
area.
