What is Mystery Science Theater?

I haven't heard of that before.....

Joel was 'sentenced' to a remote planet as some sort of punishment (they
sing a little ditty at the beginning of the show that explains the
details) and all he had was his space ship and its part to fashion 3 or 4
robot type buddies. 

They have no control over when the movie starts nor what the movie is but
they have to watch these *VERY* bad movies. They make continuous
commentary on the movie while it's going on. They sit in the front row
and you see their outlines in the lower part of the screen.

Between the movie segments they generally perform stupid humor.

It's a hoot, if you like that sort of thing...

When is it broadcast?  I've never heard of this.  The closest thing
I've heard to this is USA's Up All Night, with Gilbert Gottfried....

    I've never heard of MS Theater 3000 ... could you explain ?

 MST3K is on the Comedy Channel.  It is a hoot as TTom said.  Basically,
 Joel's "punishment" for whatever "crime" he committed is to be stranded
 alone on this spaceship and be "forced" to watch these horrible movies.
 
 So, he and his two robot buddies sit down and watch the flicks and their
 commentary as the flicks are rolling is the source of all the laughter.  I
 can't recall any exact lines they've used because they all happen so fast
 and they're so quick that you just gotta wing it and go.
 
 But you can picture it ... Imagine one of those old Japanese "nuke horror"
 movies where giant ants wander some blasted landscape and the Japanese
 actors talk real real fast but the over-dubbed English dialogue is way out
 of synch.   And Joel and these robots are chattering up a storm too and it
 gets funnier as each line goes down.
 
 I guess you have to see it to believe it.

It's on the Comedy Channel which is syndicated to cable systems. They
show the same show several times a week so you can schedule your viewing.
One regular time is Saturday mornings, around 10.

What they've done is gone from "that movie was so bad it was funny" and
made a whole show of it. As I said a bit ago, Joel <whatever his name> is
a standup comic who is quite funny. It's his show - direct, write, etc.

I'll never try to convince anyone that it's funny. *HOWEVER* if you're
predisposed to stupid humor, it can be real funny.

The "Mystery Science" part is that generally they show bad sci-fi and
adventure movies", a lot of which have current major stars playing minor
roles. As and example, around Christmas time, they showed "The Martians
Kidnap Santa Claus".

one more detail on MST; there fan headquarters are in MrT's region,
somewhere in Minnesota. I've often thought of writing them to see if they
indeed exist. 

But hey, if MST has its own conference, it must mean that they're for
real.

"Mystery Science Theater 3000" (also called MST3k) is a comedy show, based
on the idea of making fun of BAD (really BAD) movies. These are usually
(but not always) old "B" rated Science Fiction movies of the 1950's era.

The basic story line is that Joel Robinson has been stranded in space
by his "evil" overlord bosses, who force him to watch these bad movies
so that they can record his "monitor his mind".

Joel, to provide himself with companionship, has constructed 4 robot pals
out of common items he could obtain (toys, sports equipment, hardware, etc.).
These are Cambot, Gypsy, Tom Servo, and Crow. All the robots have free will.

What the viewer at home sees is a 2 hour movie, with the shadows of Joel,
Tom Servo, and Crow in the lower right-hand corner of the screen. All throughout
the film, Joel and his 'bots crack jokes and poke fun at how bad the movie is.

Cambot is an automated video cammera recording the experiment. The entire show
is from his perspective, so you never see him except during the open credits
(via a reflection in a mirror).

Gypsy at first appears to be an extremely simple robot (constructed mostly
of common hardware) without much intelligence or communication skills; but
it has been revealed that Gypsy is responsible for running the entire ship
(environment, meals, etc.), and the reason she is so inarticulate is because
she is too preoccupied with all the other activities. Gypsy looks like a
long, thick hose with a bucket and flashlight for a head.

Tom Servo, constructed mostly from toys, appears to be the most intelligent
of the 'bots but has no real method of locomotion (so Joel carries him a lot).
Tom looks mostly like an automated gumball machine.

Crow, constructed mostly of sports equipment and household hardware, is
the wisecracker and makes jokes out of everything. He is the only robot with
true legs (although you seldom see them).

Cambot and Gypsy can apparently travel throughout the ship, but are attached
to a central point by their long "snake-like" bodies. Gypsy almost never goes
into the movie theater.

Joel and the 'bots have no control over the movie, and must endure whatever
the evil scientists transmit - so they try to make the best of it.

Oh.

I don't get the Comedy Channel on my cable system.

    Once upon a time, the Lacrosse conference was on BIGQ::LAX.  The
    latest easynotes.lis still shows it there but when ya try to open it,
    "file not found" is the problem.

    Yes, JD, not only were there a lacrosse conference but there were also
    a DEC Lacrosse league around the GMA area.  T'were co-ed also.
    
    Unfortunately, I never partook in those events.  No contact, no
    checking were the rules.  I needed a mainly-main smash-haids kinda
    game.
