624.0. "XLT trade in ?" by ASDG::ELLIS () Tue Feb 11 1997 08:19

I was thinking of snow checking a new Polaris. How much could I expect
in trade for a good clean low mileage 96 XLT special with reverse ?

Sorry I'm late getting back to you.

Bad news season. Sledders are getting insulted or boned all
over. Insulted by those of us who snow checked a sled last spring
to which we were suppose to get *the* best deal, only to have all
the dealerships lower prices *dramatically* because of all their
    inventory.

Worse still, all that inventory means that dealers do not want
your sled at all. The trade in price will reflect that. It's a
double edge sword. Prices will be kept artifically low because
of the inventory glut therefore next year prices will be very
stable and there will be mega deals on _96!!!_ and lots of 97 sleds.
Sled sales for 98 will be way off. In order to compensate, dealers
will do most anything to put you on to a new ride. The trade in is
done but they already have a huge inventory, (so you'll get jack
$hit for a trade in.) But the new sled will be so attractive cost
wise lots of people will still go for it. They make a sale but now
have a 96 in stock that they took for real low dollars. They can't
move it because the price for a new XLT will be so damn low that
no one will look at the 96, so they move the 96 out the door for
38 hundred, (and they still made money.) Who's going to pass up a
96 for that price? No matter what they do, the dealers are screwed
    next year.

The good news is the market travels both ways for us. You won't
get much for you sled, but the new one won't be much either.

My guess is that the dealer will offer you between 32 and 34
for your sled. If you get more, than I would suspect that they were
getting more money from you on the sale of the new sled but all the
while, they would be maintaining the same dollar ratios.

       Trade in .............................. 3200 - 3400

If we had a great winter you'd
       get a trade in of ...................... 3500 - 4000

Direct sale (from the buyers perspective.)

       Bargain .. (good for you) ............. 4550 - 4800
       Deal .......(good for both) ............ 4300 - 4550
       Steal ......(bad for you) .............. 3850 - 4250

My personal buy mark would be 39 to 4.

I know, it doesn't really look good, does it? Don't forget
the fact that you might find the right person out there on a private
sale that is still thinking along the lines of the 95, 96 season
prices. Some would go ga-ga if they saw a nice XLT for 48 or 49.
    God bless'em.
                    8^)
