953.0. "PowerPC Reference Platform: Worth Waiting For?" by NPSS::NEWTON (Thomas Newton) Tue Feb 11 1997 17:08

Now that Microsoft has announced that they are stopping development of
Windows NT for the PowerPC, what exactly is the advantage of the PPCP/
CHRP platform over standard PowerMac and PowerMac clone hardware?

System 7, BeOS, and Rhapsody will all run fine on PowerMacs. OS/2 and
Windows NT for PPC are dead.

That leaves AIX, Solaris, Linux, and FreeBSD, and I can't imagine that
the free Unix systems would be inflexible about requiring PPCP.

MkLinux is already available for PowerMacs, so you can remove that one
as well from your left list ;-)

Windows NT was the only good reason for me to buy a PPCP... That's now
void. The single "choice" left seems to be between a PC/Windows NT
or Linux (ready) and a Mac/NeXT (planned for CY98) or MkLinux.
I guess the answer will mostly depend upon how patient Apple customers are
(I'm not much, and WNT is tempting... ).

I can be pretty patient. I use NT all work day long. And I respect
it. But it just isn't any fun. I'm looking to Apple to keep the
pleasure in computing. And I'm not just talking games - I've been
using my Playstation for that anyway - I'm talking about a system being
a joy to use. Mac's are both useful and a joy. NT PC's are just
useful. (Win95 PC's, on the other hand, are just plain useless. ;-)

The following is from <http://www.macintouch.com/> for 11-Feb-1997

We got two anonymous notes about PowerPC support in non-Mac operating
    systems:

[Note 1] "...For a while Apple thought (still) that Sun was developing
Solaris for CHRP platforms, however, when I asked [head of PowerPC
development at Sun] about it, he told me that since no one was funding
the development and the market was small and did not seem to be
increasing, at the time (November) Sun had not and did not plan to port
Solaris to the CHRP platform. Solaris has and still exists as a port to
the Motorola PowerPC motherboard (development only) and the IBM RS/6000
motherboard, but both products exist for compatibility only; likely to
be killed whenever it is not economic to maintain the port, and are
unlikely to see a true 64-bit version. That's the scoop on that; Apple
reps still think (SF/Expo) that Sun is working on a Solaris port, which
    is curious."

[Note 2] "Rumor was Micro$oft wanted $100 Million to port NT5 to PPC
They would not let Moto do the port for NT5 like they did for NT3.5.1
and NT4.0 Moto had no projections of getting that kind of revenue for
NT boxes, Neither did IBM or Apple, they told MS to keep NT. Why they
did not go public with MS demands?? I don't know..."

One reason for the PPCP is hardware standardization. You like that
snazzy keyboard/mouse/joystick/whatever that works on PCs? It will
    plug right into a PPCP.

My Power Computing PowerBase supports PC keyboards and mice today. You don't
need the full PPCP for that.

Another note today says that Microsoft actually asked for $300 Million.
I wonder how much they ask Intel to pay for Windows NT for Pentium?

MS mices, MS rats... Do they charge Digital for WNT for Alpha as well???

BTW, Motorola Mac compatibles already have *only* VGA display and PC desktop
bus (no Mac standard video, and ADB ports), isn't it?
Plus the EIDE I/O bus and the ATAPI CD-ROM, this goes quite close to PPCP...
(what lacks? A switch for the motherboard endianism and some kind of
    EPROM slot for the bootstrap?)

Actually, I like the Apple Adjustable Keyboard that I bought for my
Mac, and that seems to have been discontinued. I'd hate to upgrade
to a PPCP and be forced to downgrade my keyboard.

You have a point about joysticks / game controllers.

I'm willing to wait for Rhapsody, but I wish I could buy one machine to
run System 7.5, Rhapsody, Linux, Windows 95, and Windows NT.

Maybe Intel will become the new CHRP. I suspect Apple will continue to
keep us guessing until they come out with the Rhapsody release.
