Has anyone had a problem where ClarisWorks 4.0 IE falsely complains that it has
been modified by another program or a virus?
I have
o Deleted it and reinstalled (several times).
o Checked for viruses with Disinfectant and McAfee (eval copy) -
neither found any, and I didn't expect them to.
o Turned off and then uninstalled the Stuffit SpaceSaver portion
       of Stuffit Deluxe.
    o Thrown away preferences.
o Tried reinstalling on a different partition of the hard drive,
in case the problem was a bad disk block.
So far, nothing has worked. I presume there is a fix...
I have also gotten bitten another way. The System Requirements box said
o Mac OS compatible computer with a 68020 processor or higher
o Hard disk drive and 4 MB memory (8MB for Claris Home Page and PowerPC
       processor)
The way that's worded, it sounds like Claris Home Page needs 4 MB on a 680x0
machine and 8 MB on a PowerMac. But after I installed the software and went
to play with Home Page, I got a dialog saying it was only for the PowerPC...
way to go, Claris!

| | Hi Thomas,

    >>Has anyone had a problem where ClarisWorks 4.0 IE falsely complains
    >>that it has been modified by another program or a virus?

This rings a faint bell in my head. I believe I saw it when I was
trying to track down another problem on a **&^#^@$%% Performa 6200.
(Please excuse the editorializing. I still have not recovered my
natural equanimity lost during that experience.)

When trying to reduce the system to the minimal number of extensions,
suddenly WriteNow and ClarisWorks started returning bizarre errors
on startup. If I remember correctly, they were primarily due to having
turned off extensions and, in particular, the extensions for subscribe
    and publish.

Assuming you have the Extensions Manager and have saved your current
    set:

Try turning on all extensions, rebooting, and seeing if the errors
persist. If they go away, selectively start turning extensions
off until the errors return. That way you'll find out which
    	extension(s) are required.

| | and on the off-chance it's relevant, there's an updater for ClarisWorks (to
4.0V5) at: www.claris.com - you'll have to get at the updater via either the
"Products" or "Software Center" options (I can't get at it through either at
the moment due to a server problem).

(except the one for the disconnected, dead Iomega Zip drive) and that the
version of ClarisWorks on the CD is 4.0V5.

Can we see a list of the extensions you're running with? I've been
running ClarsWorks for several years, starting with V2.0 and working up
    through 2.1, 3.0, and 4.0, on four different machines (475, PB150,
IIci, and 6200) and have never seen the problem you're getting. I run
with a fair, but not massive, number of extensions and control panels.
(My icon march is 1-2/3 rows long.)

| | I doublechecked the version of ClarisWorks. It is 4.0v5, dated September 1996,
and has a file size of 979,176 bytes used. If you have this version and it has
a different file size, please let me know!
Here's the report from the Extensions Manager control panel. The Iomega Driver
was the only item without a check mark next to it. Note that there's all sorts
of stuff in the Extensions folder that doesn't show up in the control panel.
The only printer drivers I use now are StyleWriter 1200 and LaserWriter 8, so I
guess I could remove the others. I doubt they're causing the problem.

My copy checks in at 1.9MB in a ~300MB disk partition. Your number looks
more like .9MB.

Make sure this is V4.0 (not V4.0b1 or anything else)
> ColorSync (TM)
Unless you're doing color printing, which seems not to be the case, you
might disable this.
> Printer Share
Unless you're sharing a printer to other Mac's via the current computer, you
should probably disable this.
>

You might consider disabling the "remember most recently used stuff" option
(leaving you with just the hierarchical menus).
From .188...
ObjectSupportLib should be V1.2.

I tried reinstalling and running ClarisWorks after turning off all extensions
except for the ones needed to control the built-in Apple CD-ROM. Still no go.
The computer store where I bought it refused to do a temporary install on one
of their machines to see if it would work there. First they attempted a lame
"license" (i.e. piracy) excuse, then when that didn't wash, they fell back on
"policy".
An employee there said he had been given a ClarisWorks CD and could find no
way around this message. He suggested just ignoring it, and implied that all
the store's copies would have the same problem.
Fortunately, someone at Claris responded to my post on AOL. They are only at
the stage of suggesting turning extensions off, but that's a start.

I got e-mail from Claris saying that they had made a batch of CD-ROMs
with bad installers, and giving a number to call to get a replacement.
Hopefully this will fix the problems of
    1. ClarisWorks claiming to have been modified by another program or
virus (when there's no reason to believe this happened),
    2. Home Page claiming it needs a PowerPC (when it's supposed to run
       on a 68020 or better).
