I'd like to find a nice cheap mac that I could run a program called Hyperproof on. Hyperproof is a logic engine
that I used in some coursework at RPI and no PC version is available. Hyperproof requires about 16 megs of memory
at minimum and if someone out there has an extra mac (something above an SE, say) that is collecting dust, I'm
your man.

Wanted....any external SCSI device, dead or alive
    		(hard drive, floppy, removable, etc.)

Our school has been given some old computers that have no
hard drives. We have small 'internal' hard drives that were
replaced with larger ones but have no external cases to put
them in so they can be powered and connected. We are looking
for external SCSI cases to put these drives into.

or any suggestions who might have such things?

    thanks

You could check with some of the drive vendors, or look in Computer Shopper.
However, if your school's drives are small, it may not be economical to buy
cases.

For example, APS charges $50 more for an external drive than for an internal
one ... but they charge $130 for a case by itself.

When you can purchase a 2 Gigabyte external hard drive for $400, paying $130
for a case doesn't sound so great.

Right, I am not planning on paying $130 for a case. I did call APS,
and the cheapest they sell is about that.

I see them in www.onsale.com for $40 or so...(its an auction).
A friend just offered a case from a dead CD drive she has...that
should work. I'm hoping to find them for free. Even if I can get
them for free, it'll be arm twisting to get the school to cough up
the money for the SCSI cables.

    Bob,

I would call RST in Hudson,or Nashua NH as the last time I was in
there they had a whole bunch of empty scsi boxes that would fit right
under a Mac Plus,Classic, and SE etc.... I seem to remember they were
in the $30 range and with buying a quantity it would cost you less.
They only needed a drive to be functional.

right now I'm looking for 'free' surplus...like from
DEC salvage. dealing with the Digital Recycle may be more
than I can manage. Its amazing how many of these your friends
    have in closets.

What I REALLY expect I'll have a hard time with is just getting
the school to findn the money for the SCSI cables and terminators.

It might be cheaper to just buy a new external CDROM drive. The
internal CDs in the 575 are only 2x (I know, I have one). Spend
your money on a faster CDROM outside the box.

Isn't this copy of 7.1 for 'internal Digital use only'?

I thought 7.1 was 'sold' and not distributed free.

8.507SMURF::BINDERErrabit quicquid errare potest.Wed May 21 1997 18:337
    Re .506

It is my understanding that DIGITAL employees are free to use these
"internal" versions on their personal systems at home but not to
further distribute them. This was explicitly the case with the
short-lived availability of WordPerfect 3.1, and it is also the case,
so far as I know, with things like the VT320 CTB tool.
8.508System 7.1 floppies foundCPEEDY::YOUNGPaulThu May 22 1997 10:4132
    Re: .505, .506, .507

There is indeed a copy in the HUMANE archives.

I'm not concerned with the "internal use only" policy, as this
is to replace missing disks for a Quadra 700 which, I believe,
shipped with 7.1 and therefore is already licensed for it.

However there were a few problems using the archive:

    1. The versions of the files are 7.1 SEED. Not a big problem,
        but not pretty.

    2. The images are low density floppies. I managed to scrounge
enough 800K disks to build an install set and took it home
        to put on the Q700.

In order to make it fit on low density floppies Apple used
a version 6.0.7 system image! As a result the install and
disk tools floppies will not boot!

(I hear several old-time Mac folks saying "groan, I remember that
    now...").

Anyhow, I found a set of real 7.1 HD floppies and the Q700 is happily
running the old operating system. So I'm no longer looking for those.

I still need a graphics card, as the one I am using won't support 7.5
    without an expensive ROM upgrade.

    				Paul
