1518.0. "2100A console Hangs PCM 1.6-201" by CGOWGS::GIBB (John Gibb MCS Systems Support) Thu Apr 10 1997 10:19

Howdy,

I am working a CLD were we have multiply 2100A running vms 6.2-1h1. Customer is experiencing console hangs, a
reboot is needed to clear this condition.

The system is NOT hung, just the console. They also have other VAX/ALPHA platforms which are working fine. It
seems that only the 2100A are seeing this problem.

They are using PCM 1.6-201 console manager. Is the 2100A supported under PCM?. If so are there any special setups
to the console and under VMS for the serial port on a 2100A?.

Any inputs or recommendations would be appreciated..

When this condition occurs, whats the device status as reported by
    SDA> SHOW DEV OPA0?

Also, is the 2100A connected to a terminal server and if so is TELNET
or LAT being used? When it's hung, you want to connect to the
    DECServer and do

    Local> SHOW PORT x STATUS

where x is the port number that the 2100A is connected too.
The goal here is to check for INput or Output being Xoff'd.
If either is xoff'd then we have a flow control problem.

    Local> SHOW PORT x COUNTERS

The goal here is to check for errors on the port escpecially
    data-overruns. If Data-overruns is non-zero we've got a
    *bad* flow control problem.

>They are using PCM 1.6-201 console manager. Is the 2100A supported under PCM?.

    Absolutely!

    >If so are there any special setups to the console and under VMS for the serial port on a 2100A?.

Nope. About the only non-default terminal setting is Hostsync. And this
is not really an issue unless your using the DIALOG interface to drive
some operation. Hostsync is what allows the console to flow control
PCM. Joe-user thats using tyhe connect interface could never type fast
enough to overflow the type-ahead buffer on the console but it would be
possible for the DIALOG interface to do so if you were sending
    commands very rapidly.

>Any inputs or recommendations would be appreciated.

I would recommend decreasing the baud rate to 4800 baud
and see if it makes a difference. I used to see hangs on other boxes
(the VAX 6000 series most notably) when the baud rate was set to 9600
which was more than twicw the max recommended setting.

Thanks Dan..

This was what the F/S Engineer Supplied. I am also pursueing the VMS Patches
for Opcom problems. I could be in left field on this but the problem started
after the 2100A upgrades and at the same time VMS was upgraded to V6.2-1h1

Thanks for your help..

The two systems experiencing hung consoles are Alpha 2100A's. They
are set to use serial consoles which are connected to PCM (version 1.6-201)
via DECserver 200/MC terminal servers. The serial console port on GSMS01
has hung twice since the system was upgraded from a 2100 running VMS 6.2-1h1
to a 2100A running VMS 6.2-1h1. The console port on the other 2100A system,
GSMS02, has hung three times since the same upgrade. Each time we have had
to reboot the system to get the console back. Currently GSMS01 has a hung
console port but GSMS02 is functioning. GSMS01 reboot has been scheduled
for 22:00 tonight.

The FE needs to do a SHOW PORT x STATUS command. He just did a SHOW
PORT x. Based on the error count on OPA0 your seeing lots of
data-overruns which means flow control is not working. The actual
XON/XOFF is done at the server, not at the PCM engine. If this happened
after the processor upgrade I would wonder about the 2100A console.

It seems the MTBF is about 1 month. FE is to determine if anything different is occuring on these two boxes
in that time frame. Not sure but it could be a power user just typeing a mile a minute..

Thanks For your suggestions..

Did your find non-zero counters on the server port?

The only thing you can do on the PCM engine is
set the values of the SYSGEN params

    TTY_ALTYPAHD = 2000
    TTY_ALTALARM = 640

This has a much greater effect on direct connections
but it's recommend that you use these for LAT
as well. They are meaningless for TELNET connections.
