1490.0. "PCM fails to start on Digital Unix V4.0A" by BRSADV::MICHIELS (Why do only fools and horses work?) Mon Feb 24 1997 06:55
I know PCM V1.6 is not supported on Digital Unix V4.0A, but until a
few days ago it worked fine. We were able to configure systems into PCM
and to connect to the consoles.
As the customer ignored during a long time the archiving, we decided to delete
all PCM logs files. So we stopped PCM, deleted the log files, and
tried to restart it. And this failed. The console daemon dies after
a few seconds. Even after a system reboot, we were not able to start
PCM again. We even deleted all PCM files, and reinstalled the product.
No cure.
So we defined the variable CONSOLE_DEBUG=ALL, and tried again. The output
is appended below.
It looks like that a "Set system name" always returns null, and lets
PCM conclude that no systems are defined in the configuration file.
(CMShm: Reference count == 0, deleting shared memory from process space)
Any ideas what goes wrong now? We did not install any other software,
nor did a kernel rebuild.
Thanks and regards,
Johan.

Johan,
were there any verification errors when you startup the console
manager windows editor? Any verification error and the daemons wont
start. I've seen mysterious verification errors cleared up
by exporting the data, deleting the database, and importing
the data back in.

| Bert,
No I did not have any verification errors.
As said before, I even deleted everything from PCM, including the
config file, re-installed everything, and started configuring from
scratch. No cure.
Really frustrating all this, if you know it worked before.
