1433.0. "PCM V1.6-308, child controller dies with status 24" by COMICS::HAWLEYI (668 - the neighbour of the beast!) Wed Nov 27 1996 08:57

Hi all,

Thought we'd sorted all of these problems but it looks like one slipped through!
Digital UNIX V3.2D, PCM V1.6-308, (i think its 6 children per controller) child
controller died with following message:

Console Controller Daemon : Child Controller (index = 2) abnormally exited,
status 24

If anyone still has access to the source, could they let me know what status 24
means? I cant say ive seen that one before...

regards,

Ian Hawley.

    Ian,
This is a Unix status code and not a PCM status. Obviously, this is
the exit status of the line controller daemon. We need some table in
Dunix doc to lookup what it means.

Dan,

Another customers just called me with the same error on his system so it seems
as if its a generic problem.

Status 24 = too many open files. If this was just one system I would think it
was a setup/config problem with DUnix but 2 separate customers?

It seems to run for 2 or 3 days before this occurs so it could be opening
temporary files and not closing them properly perhaps?

Do both of these sites do daily archives? If so could you ask them to
not archive for a few days to see if it'll stay up longer. I'm not
aware of anything in the line controller daemon that dynamically opens
temporary files. There may be something unique about DUnix though.

Dan,

> Do both of these sites do daily archives?

its a weekly archive i'm afraid in both cases.
One of the sites is claiming that loads of files have been filling up /tmp.
He said he thinks they started 'maaa...'. not sure if its related.

Ive got him trying to reproduce it...

thanks,

Ian.
