1343.0. "DCROSF162: still Shared memory problems" by SIERA::"[email protected]" (Miguel Mena) Tue Jul 16 1996 08:40

Hello,

this problem was discussed in here already,
but there is no solution for it ...

Environment:
Digital UNIX 3.2d-1
Console Manager 1.6 ECO 2

Problem:

Starting up and shutting down again and again using
"C3->Commands->ConsoleManager->Startup/Shutdown" or
"console_startup"/"console -s -y" is no problem, as
long as you don't have any connect/monitor running.

but ... having any connect/monitor running (console_conmon)
and stopping console manager with "console -s -y"
the result is unpredictable...

Sometimes it just closes "console_conmon" processes
and shuts down the daemon (consoled, console_ensd),
but doesn't free shared mem or "console -s -y" just hangs.

Has anyone seen that problem too ?

Thanks for any suggestion/help/comment !

 Miguel

Miguel,

This is a problem on as far as I can see ALL unix based PCM systems.
PCM does not seem to be deassigning its shared memory.
I have IPMTd it and am awaiting resolution. Best fix so far seems to be to
remove the shared memory sections manually with: ipcrm -m

1343.6got it, but ...SIERA::"[email protected]"Miguel MenaThu Jul 25 1996 04:3419
Hi,

I fetched the patch and tested it; so far it looks good.
Just one little problem - when console_eventlist gets
executed, I see this warnings ...

POLYCENTER Console Manager
Eventlist Version V1.6-305
Copyright (c) 1995 Digital Equipment Corporation. All Rights Reserved

X Toolkit Warning: Urm__FetchLiteral: Cannot find literal 'k_reconnect_msg_text' - MrmNOT_FOUND
X Toolkit Warning: Urm__FetchLiteral: Cannot find literal 'k_reconnect_name_text' - MrmNOT_FOUND
X Toolkit Warning: Urm__FetchLiteral: Cannot find literal 'k_reconnect_context_text' - MrmNOT_FOUND

Seems, that I need new "console_eventlist*.uid" files.

Miguel,

Yep, I get this too.Doesn't stop the eventlist being started but its a little
annoying. I swear my eventlist keeps disappearing occasionally too, but I might
be imagining things!

so far, all tests have been positive and I havent seen a reoccurance of the
shared memory problems.

    Hello,

There were changes in the UID files that was not included in this
patch. They will be included in the next patch and in the next ECO kit.

For now, you can copy console_eventlist_en_GB.uid and
console_eventlist_en_US.uid files from the node ALEXWS (51.397) from the
directory DISK$PUBLIC:[PCM.UNIX_305] and put them in the directory
    /usr/opt/DCR160/lib/X11/uid/OSF.

    Sorry,

The .UID files were incorrectly copied from Digital UNIX to VMS
    machine. Now they are correct.

1343.15Ooops, not yet :(SIERA::"[email protected]"Miguel MenaWed Aug 14 1996 03:1823
I'm sorry guys :(

but after testing Revison 305 for a while I noticed another (new) problem:

I was connected to a console, worked there for a while and then
disconnected from that console.

Then I wanted to reconnect to the same console ... but I cannot connect.
It stops in Console Monitor Window with a message ...
"Console Manager is not running".

I checked, if all processes are running: there is one consoled, one console_ensd
and one consoled Child ... plus c3, eventlist etc ...

Then I tried with another console, but it is the same. I have to restart
console manager, then I'm able to connect to console again.

Please help, thanks a lot !

  Miguel

Sounds like a similar situation to the one I get in 1356.0
I put on Patch305 and one I try to connect it says its not running, if you then
do a console -d its all zeros.
Go back to ECO 2 and it works, except, still the shared memory problems.
I'm pushing this one back to engineering.
