1256.0. "Upgrade 4000/60 to Alpha - use VMS or UNIX ?" by 49877::HOBBS (If there's a god in heaven, he's got a Silver Thunderbird...) Fri Mar 29 1996 02:11

A fairly large (~100 nodes) system is going to be upgraded from a VAXstation
to an AlphaStation.

CERN would like advice on whether to use UNIX or VMS on the Alpha.

The system manager would prefer to stick with VMS, unless the UNIX version
is higher quality or better able to handle large numbers of nodes. The
general trend is towards UNIX, however, so he needs help with any arguments
for taking one O/S over the other.

Any opinions on the choice of O/S for a large installation? Feel free to
distinguish between information that can be shared with the customer and
background info that should not be shared (or use MAIL if too sensitive
to post).

THanks for the help...

One intersting bit of information might be the rough balance in sales
between Dunix and VMS versions of the product.

If the majority of the sales are for VMS, that would help influence the
decision.

    CW,
To the best of my knowledge OpenVMS sales are ahead of DUnix in the
PCM space. We have a new product manager but I do not have his mail
address. Rae Collier is the former product manager and she probably
wouldn't mind answering the question. You can contact her at
    MUZICK::RCOLLIER.

As far as beiung able to handle a large number of nodes with OpenVMS,
no problem. We have a 6620 that is managing 200+ nodes and they don't
have any performance problems. If there is substantial console traffic
in your config, the best thing you can do is spread the logging around
on multiple spindles or consider host-based or controller-based RAID.
Obviously, PCM is write intensive so spend money there. As of this
writing we don't know what the gains will be when using Spiralog.

Most compute time is used when scanning for events so any of the EV5 Alphas
will be more than adequate for this task.

    I hope this helps.

    Regards,
       Dan

As Dan said, the bulk of our current installed base customers are
on OpenVMS, but the Digital UNIX numbers are also increasing.

Something your customer may want to take into consideration is that
    (1) there will be a migration cost to go from OpenVMS VAX to OpenVMS
Alpha, as there will be to go from OpenVMS VAX to Digital UNIX Alpha.
    (2) they may incur additional cost if they were to go to OpenVMS Alpha
FIRST and then decide to go to Digital UNIX Alpha later. However,
that is traded off against being able to postpone training their staff
to manage from a UNIX system immediately.

Hope these replies help your customer to make an informed decision.

When talking to Phil Baxter, many moons ago, who was the project
leader - he told me that OpenVMS had a write penalty compared to the
UNIX version, in that it wasn't as efficient. I'm afraid that's all I
can remember. Anyway, if you use multiple spindles - then it shouldn't
    be an issue.

However, be aware that if you use the ENS multiline window action there
is definitely a performance hit if you decide to display the text of
the message - this was why V1.5 didn't have that option.

This is mostly because of the way XQP works as well as overhead
within the C RTL file routines. I have a feeling this will
    change dramatically with Spiralog.
