CONFIGURATION: 2 - 4500 with 50 PCM ports monitoring UNIX and VMS systems DECserver700 + DEChub900 as terminal servers OpenVMS V6.1 PCM V1.6 with ECO 1.1-9 SYMPTOMS: When the customer checks the PCM system he notices that icons have turned gray, this means that there has been a loss of connection to the system that is being monitored. This happens anywhere from 1 to 4 times a day and can not be isolated to any terminal server or PCM system. When this occurs, the customer is unable to reconnect the service and has to shutdown PCM, the SHUTDOWN/STARTUP cycle takes approximately 30 minutes. At the Terminal-Server, a show port status indicates that there are no sessions and the port status idle. The last time this occurred, the events for C3 had the following message: console link for dg44 lost %System-w-dataoverun, data over run - DG44 lost data overrun data overrun. PROBLEM: the customer is unable to reconnect the single port that failed and until he shuts down PCM. We must provide the customer with a method of reconnecting the port without having to shutdown PCM! The way things are currently running, he looses communication with 50 systems for 30 minutes to 2 hours a day. REPRODUCABLE: The customer can reproduce the problem by typing LOGOUT PORT X on his terminal servers.

1182.1 | CSC32::BUTTERWORTH | Gun Control is a steady hand. | Tue Feb 06 1996 17:56 | 20
This is either an environmental problem or something unique to this type of terminal server. PCM attempts to reconnect to a lost line every 150 seconds aka 2.5 minutes. The data overrun bothers me as this indicates a flow control problem. Now, I woul dlike you to check the following sysgen params on the PCM engine only: TTY_ALTYPAHD = 1000 TTY_ALTALARM = 320 You can increase the valus but maintain the roughly 3 to 1 ratio. I use 2000 and 640 as I have the non-paged pool resourtces (and memory) to support it. Regs, Dan
1182.2 | The current settings are | CSC32::COLTER | Wed Feb 07 1996 10:55 | 10
The customers machines contain 64M of memory. The value of TTY_ALTYPAHD is 4096 and TTY_ALTALARM is 640. I have had the customer set them to 2000 and 640 respectivily. Can you direct me to a resource for the proper settings for the DECserver700 and 90? The customer indicates that his user manual does not contain any information on the proper terminal server settings.
