Hi,
Customer is starting the whole process over again and wants me to
help them decide on best hardware to run PCM on. Can someone
help me provide the customer with this information? They are
considering an Alpha Workstation of some sort. Is any one better
than any other in regards to running PCM? This is to support an
OpenVMS VAXcluster of three VAX 7000 740s and two VAX 8820s. Is a
terminal server the best way to connect to these machines? Appreciating
any input into this. BTW, its a government installation and having the
hardware be on the GSA Schedule would help. Would Volume Shadowing
the disks on the Alpha be a good idea too. And what about a backup
device for the Alpha?
Thanks!

Any of the Alpha CPU's is up to the task of running PCM. Do not skimp
on memory. The minimum supported is 32 megs and since OpenVMS Alpha
uses more memory to begin with I would recommend 64 megs.
In regard to your question about shadowing, it will depend on your
customers view of data reliability. If your customer wants redudancy
of the logging disks then use it. You will not gain any performance
by using shadowing so if thast is the goal your better off with
striping.
As far as your interconnect method, I would recommend the Decserver
700 as it affords excellent character throughput and allows using
Telnet or LAT as the protocol.

Dan
