Only if you want to be able to TELNET etc. between the PCM engine and
the HP or if you intended to connect the HP system to a terminal server
and use TELNETas the connection protocol.
This question and the reaminder of youquestions indiccate that you
have the impression that PCM is Client/Server and it is not. PCM
couldn't care less what kind of device you connect it to as long as that
system is ASCII, has an RS232 or DEC423 console port and supports
XON/XOFF flow control and data buffering.
> 2. Must I install DECnet software on the HP system?
Again, only if you have some other need for DECNet protocol.
> 3. Must I define the node (DECnet or TPC/IP) address on the network
> database on the PCM workstation?
If you want to be able to set host, telnet etc then yes.
Rember that wehn pcm establishes the connection the remote node that
the "networked portion" of this connection is from the PCM to the
server - not directly to the managed system. Most folks running OpenVMS
based PCM engines use LAT as that is bundled with OpenVMS. It is
perfectly acceptable for you to use LAT as the protocol to connect to
the server port that the HP is connected too.

You should be able to use the same settings.
> 5. There is a specific scan profile I suppose to trap the HP console
messages. There is any existing HP UNIX profile somewhere? Can you give
me any pointer?
If it isn't in the scan profiles area on PCMSVR:: - see the SCAN
PROFILE note for more detail - then there isn't one.
Use the Unix profile for now if you can't find one.

| Thanks Dan.
I am aware that PCM is not a client/server, and my questions came out
after a very simple try to connect the HP console. Here is my try:
- I connected the HP console to the terminal Server port using the same
setting of the OpenVMS systems.
_ I defined the system in the PCM database using "none" scan profile,
just to see if I get the prompt console. If I got success I would
studied the right profile.
- I reconfigured the PCM and then I tried to connect the HP system
clicking twice on the HP icon on the C3 window. What happend at this
point was that I get a black window (the HP console I suppose) just for
a while and then the black window disapperead.
I was with the customer and I was not able to explain the fact, can
you? So I thought there were some special settings or features to use to
connect the Unix systems and I put my questions on this conference.
From your answers I am now sure that during my simple test I connected in
the right way the HP console and than I will try again the next time I
will go to the customer site (in the North of Italy and not here in
Rome, so I have to organize my travel during the next month).
Thanks again.

| WHat you need to do is do a CONSOLE CONNECT from a DECterm.
If this works then all is well. If not, then do
a CONSOLE STATUS/CONTIN from a DECterm and when the screen paints type
the letter 'a'. This will display one line for each node in the
configuration. Of particular interest is the STATE field. This will
tell us if the line was opened etc.
