1107.0. "PCM = Most expensive software ?" by 45448::DAVIES (Not Also, but ONLY) Wed Nov 22 1995 08:05

Is PCM the most expensive piece of software we sell ? for example:-

Almost $84K seems a little high when a unix unlimited user license for an
Alphaserver 8400 is $14,065

Is this price correct ?

In the UK it is even more expensive as the effective exchange rate is
1-1. The traditional licence works out at 81,670 pounds sterling and
the user licence is 766 pounds or $130672 or $1225 respectively.
We have local telcos wanting PCM and OSC ( and nothing else)running on a Alphastation or
Alphaserver 1000 with 40-50 licences and this appears as the single
biggest price item at more than 50% of the total.
I suggest a sliding scale of prices; say $500 for first 10 reducing to
    say $50 for 190-200 licences.
The current pricing makes it difficult for customers to achieve the
cost saving that can justify the acquisition of PCM.

Geoff,

yes and no. I agree that initial start up is costly - especially if the customer
has a large number of machines. However, the unlimited license breaks even at
100 connections - so it becomes very cheap after that point.

Of course, with new machines, the cost is negligeable. I've found the best way
to approach new systems is to define an operations 'architecture', that means
that all new systems must have a minimum management product set. When you are
paying like that, it doesn't cost much (Every system - #700 each +, maybe PSW
agent Scheduler, and PPS).

1107.3pricing and structure being re-evaluated...57134::KUNGThu Nov 30 1995 14:4914
Product management has been evaluating the cost of the capacity
license for PCM to see if it would make sense to change the pricing
structure or the cost so that it would be feasible for all (or at
least most) of the different configurations and sized datacenters.

Given the current license checks in the product, any changes in
the short term would need to stay within certain guidelines so
that no re-engineering would be required.
